Since the non-invasive technque of retinal densitometry became available in 1955, rhodopsin kinetics could be studied in vivo. It was obvious that with this new tool investigators focussed attention on the aetiology of night blindness in various diseases. We report the case of an 18-year-old male who developed both nutritional amblyopia and night blindness. After nearly a lifetime of consuming a bizarre diet limited to French fries, pretzels, crackers, and carbonated sodas, he had a relatively sudden onset of night blindness and bilateral visual loss. The night blindness resolved after taking daily oral vitamin A supplements. Night blindness from vitamin A deficiency was observed in a patient with intestinal malabsorption, which in turn was attributable to duodenal diverticulosis and bacterial growth. Monthly supplementation with vitamin A and correction of bacterial overgrowth with tetracycline resulted in a normalisation of plasma retinol levels and resolution of the night blindness.

A 69-year-old hyperopic man developed acute night blindness and hallucinations of shimmering lights three years after resection of a cutaneous malignant melanoma. There were no metastatic ocular lesions and he had received no medications. His electroretinogram showed abnormalities comparable to those of patients with congenital stationary night blindness with myopia. Metastatic melanoma was recognized several months later.
