The influence of posttraumatic parenteral calorie and nitrogen supply upon the cumulative nitrogen balance.

The aim of the study was to describe the influence of posttraumatic calorie and nitrogen (N) supply upon the cumulative N-balance by analyzing the literature of the past 18 years. Three groups of patients were formed, in which nutritional therapy was performed following trauma of differing severity: (1) patients following moderate trauma-N-losses 10-15 g/day; (2) patients following severe trauma--N-losses 15-20 g/day; and (3) polytraumatised patients--N-losses more than 20 g/day. The data gained for the calorie and N-supplies as well as for the N-balances in each group of patients served as a …

The interaction of iron pyrite with oxygen, nitrogen and nitrogen oxides: a first-principles study.

Sulphide materials, in particular MoS(2), have recently received great attention from the surface science community due to their extraordinary catalytic properties. Interestingly, the chemical activity of iron pyrite (FeS(2)) (the most common sulphide mineral on Earth), and in particular its potential for catalytic applications, has not been investigated so thoroughly. In this study, we use density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the surface interactions of fundamental atmospheric components such as oxygen and nitrogen, and we have explored the adsorption and dissociation of nitrogen mo…

BnaNAC19 promotes low-nitrogen-induced leaf senescence and nitrogen remobilization in Brassica napus L.

Nitrogen (N) remobilization from senescing leaves is essential for sustaining crop growth and yield under N-limited conditions, yet the regulatory mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Here, we investigated the role of the NAC transcription factor BnaNAC19 in leaf senescence and N remobilization. BnaNAC19 was preferentially expressed in older leaves and siliques, and its transcript level was markedly induced by low-N stress. Under low-N conditions, BnaNAC19-overexpressing lines displayed accelerated senescence of older leaves, as indicated…

Emergent Plants Improve Nitrogen Uptake Rates by Regulating the Activity of Nitrogen Assimilation Enzymes.

Effectively utilizing aquatic plants to absorb nitrogen from water bodies and convert it into organic nitrogen via nitrogen assimilation enzyme activity reduces water nitrogen concentrations. This serves as a critical strategy for mitigating agricultural non-point source pollution in the Yellow River Basin However, emergent plants' rate and mechanism of uptake of different forms of nitrogen remain unclear. This study determined the nitrogen uptake rates, nitrogen assimilation activities, root properties, and photosynthetic parameters of four emergent plants, Phragmites australis, Typha orienta…

Enantioselective Synthesis of Nitrogen-Nitrogen Biaryl Atropisomers via Copper-Catalyzed Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Reaction.

Nitrogen-nitrogen bonds containing motifs are ubiquitous in natural products and bioactive compounds. However, the atropisomerism arising from a restricted rotation around an N-N bond is largely overlooked. Here, we describe a method to access the first enantioselective synthesis of N-N biaryl atropisomers via a Cu-bisoxazoline-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. A wide range of axially chiral N-N bisazaheterocycle compounds were efficiently prepared in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities via desymmetrization and kinetic resolution. Heating experiments showed that the axi…

SnRK2.10 in apple positively regulates the nitrogen use efficiency via modulating the nitrogen uptake.

Sucrose non-fermentation-1-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) family members play key roles in plant adaptation to environmental stress. In this study, low nitrogen (N) stress induced the expression of SnRK2.10, which mitigated the adverse effects of N deficiency in apple plants. SnRK2.10-overexpressing (OE) plants showed enhanced growth and higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), whereas SnRK2.10-silenced (Ri) plants exhibited more severe growth inhibition and reduced NUE, compared with the wild-type (WT) plants under low N conditions. The transcriptomic and proteomic analyses indicated that SnRK…

Biochar leachate reduces primary nitrogen assimilation by inhibiting nitrogen fixation and microbial nitrate assimilation.

Biochar contains biotoxic aromatic compounds, and their influence on nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, the critical nitrogen fixer in paddy soil, has never been tested. Here, the physiological, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses of Nostoc sp. PCC7120 in response to biochar leachate were performed. The results suggested that biochar leachate inhibited the efficiency of photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, and nitrate assimilation activities of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. Biochar leachate containing aromatic compounds and odd- and long-chain saturated fatty acids impaired the membrane struct…

Autotrophic nitrogen removal after ureolytic phosphate precipitation to remove both endogenous and exogenous nitrogen.

Anaerobic digestion yields effluents rich in ammonium and phosphate and poor in biodegradable organic carbon, thereby making them less suitable for conventional biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In addition, the demand for fertilizers is increasing, energy prices are rising and global phosphate reserves are declining. This requires both changes in wastewater treatment technologies and implementation of new processes. In this contribution a description is given of the combination of a ureolytic phosphate precipitation (UPP) and an autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) process on the anae…

Leaf nitrogen dioxide uptake coupling apoplastic chemistry, carbon/sulfur assimilation, and plant nitrogen status.

Emission and plant uptake of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NO + NO(2)) significantly influence regional climate change by regulating the oxidative chemistry of the lower atmosphere, species composition and the recycling of carbon and nutrients, etc. Plant uptake of nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) is concentration-dependent and species-specific, and covaries with environmental factors. An important factor determining NO(2) influx into leaves is the replenishment of the substomatal cavity. The apoplastic chemistry of the substomatal cavity plays crucial roles in NO(2) deposition rates and the tolerance …

Boron-nitrogen fullerenes as electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction: A computational study of affinity and reaction mechanism.

The current industrial methods for producing ammonia (NH3) are energy intensive and result in significant carbon dioxide emissions. To address this challenge, we propose the use of a boron nitride (BN) structure, B16N12, as an efficient electrocatalyst for synthesizing NH3. Our research involved density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the interaction between N2 molecules and the B16N12 surface. We found that the catalyst's cationic state effectively captures and activates N2 molecules. This interaction is stabilized by specific bonding configurations and polarization effect

Unexpected response of nitrogen deposition to nitrogen oxide controls and implications for land carbon sink.

Terrestrial ecosystems in China receive the world's largest amount of reactive nitrogen (N) deposition. Recent controls on nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) emissions in China to tackle air pollution are expected to decrease N deposition, yet the observed N deposition fluxes remain almost stagnant. Here we show that the effectiveness of NOx emission controls for reducing oxidized N (NOy = NOx + its oxidation products) deposition is unforeseen in Eastern China, with one-unit reduction in NOx emission leading to only 55‒76% reductions in NOy-N deposition, as opposed to the high effectiveness (aro…

Molecular basis of enzymatic nitrogen-nitrogen formation by a family of zinc-binding cupin enzymes.

Molecules with a nitrogen-nitrogen (N-N) bond in their structures exhibit various biological activities and other unique properties. A few microbial proteins are recently emerging as dedicated N-N bond forming enzymes in natural product biosynthesis. However, the details of these biochemical processes remain largely unknown. Here, through in vitro biochemical characterization and computational studies, we report the molecular basis of hydrazine bond formation by a family of di-domain enzymes. These enzymes are widespread in bacteria and sometimes naturally exist as two standalone enzymes. We r…

The Role of Gibberellins in Regulation of Nitrogen Uptake and Physiological Traits in Maize Responding to Nitrogen Availability.

Modified gibberellin (GA) signaling leads to semi-dwarfism with low nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) in crops. An understanding of GA-mediated N uptake is essential for the development of crops with improved NUE. The function of GA in modulating N uptake capacity and nitrate (NO3-) transporters (NRTs) was analyzed in the GA synthesis-deficient mutant zmga3ox grown under low (LN) and sufficient (SN) N conditions. LN significantly suppressed the production of GA1, GA3, and GA4, and the zmga3ox plants showed more sensitivity in shoots as well as LN stress. Moreover, the higher anthocyanin accumu…

Evidence for differential effects of reduced and oxidised nitrogen deposition on vegetation independent of nitrogen load.

Nitrogen (N) deposition impacts natural and semi-natural ecosystems globally. The responses of vegetation to N deposition may, however, differ strongly between habitats and may be mediated by the form of N. Although much attention has been focused on the impact of total N deposition, the effects of reduced and oxidised N, independent of the total N deposition, have received less attention. In this paper, we present new analyses of national monitoring data in the UK to provide an extensive evaluation of whether there are differences in the effects of reduced and oxidised N deposition across eig…

Expanded role for the nitrogen assimilation control protein in the response of Klebsiella pneumoniae to nitrogen stress.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is able to utilize many nitrogen sources, and the utilization of some of these nitrogen sources is dependent on the nitrogen assimilation control (NAC) protein. Seven NAC-regulated promoters have been characterized in K. pneumoniae, and nine NAC-regulated promoters have been found by microarray analysis in Escherichia coli. So far, all characterized NAC-regulated promoters have been directly related to nitrogen metabolism. We have used a genome-wide analysis of NAC binding under nitrogen limitation to identify the regions of the chromosome associated with NAC in K. pneumo…

Formation of phosphorus-nitrogen bonds by reduction of a titanium phosphine complex under molecular nitrogen.

The reduction of high oxidation state metal complexes in the presence of molecular nitrogen is one of the most common methods to synthesize a dinitrogen complex. However, the presence of strong reducing agents combined with the poor binding ability of N2 can lead to unanticipated outcomes. For example, the reduction of [NPN]ZrCl2(THF) (where NPN = PhP(CH2SiMe2NPh)2) with KC8 under N2 leads to the formation of the side-on bridged dinuclear dinitrogen complex ([NPN]Zr(THF))2(mu-eta2:eta2-N2) with an N-N bond distance of 1.503(3) A; however, reduction of the corresponding titanium precursor, [NPN…

Metabolic effects of antisickling amounts of nitrogen and nor-nitrogen mustard on rabbit and human erythrocytes.

Nitrogen mustard (NH2) and Nor-nitrogen mustard (Nor-HN2) both inhibit the polymerization of deoxyhemoglobin S in solution and in intact erythrocytes. Metabolic studies were undertaken to determine the feasability of an extracorporeal treatment with these or related agents. Glucose utilization, hexose monophosphate shunt activity, methemoglobin reduction, and incubation with acetylphenylhydrazine for Heinz body formation were performed, as well as specific assays for hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, ATP, reduced glutathione (GSH), and survi…
