Endurance beyond 10 billion cycles in wurtzite ferroelectrics by confining nitrogen vacancies.

Wurtzite ferroelectrics could provide a route to wafer-scale integrated ferroelectric memories but are limited by endurance, typically failing at ~108 cycles. We identified nitrogen-vacancy (VN) clustering and long-range percolative migration as the defect-mediated pathways that drive leakage-current growth and dielectric breakdown. We combined a spatially engineered aluminum scandium nitride/aluminum nitride (AlScN/AlN) superlattice with a dynamic recovery protocol to spatially and energetically confine VN evolution that stabilized defect topology under cyclic electrical stress and suppressed

Additive Effects of Multiple Global Change Drivers on Terrestrial Nitrogen Cycling Worldwide.

Global change has dramatically altered the Earth's biogeochemical cycles. However, the interactive effects of multiple global change factors (GCFs) on terrestrial nitrogen (N) cycling worldwide remain unclear, limiting the ability to predict how future global change will affect the global N cycle. We conducted a meta-analysis of 108 published articles to evaluate the main and interactive effects of elevated CO2, N addition, warming, and altered precipitation on soil N pools (NH4 +, NO3 -, and organic N) and transformation rates (N mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification) across terr

Cycling of Gaseous Reactive Nitrogen Oxides and Its Role in Driving Secondary Pollution.

Gaseous reactive nitrogen oxides (RNO) are important precursors of photochemical smog, acid rain, and haze. They can be transported and converted at any time of the day. Therefore, we summarize the cycle and conversion of these gaseous RNO species at different times of the day: during the day, during the day-night transition, and at night, respectively. Subsequently, taking into account the complex atmospheric environment, we then analyzed the effects of the VOC photochemistry and temperature on the gas-phase RNO cycle conversion. In addition, we also comprehensively discuss the impact of the

Validating HONO as an Intermediate Tracer of the External Cycling of Reactive Nitrogen in the Background Atmosphere.

In the urban atmosphere, nitrogen oxide (NOx═NO + NO2)-related reactions dominate the formation of nitrous acid (HONO). Here, we validated an external cycling route of HONO and NOx, i.e., formation of HONO resulting from precursors other than NOx, in the background atmosphere. A chemical budget closure experiment of HONO and NOx was conducted at a background site on the Tibetan Plateau and provided direct evidence of the external cycling. An external daytime HONO source of 100 pptv h-1 was determined. Both soil emissions and photolysis of nitrate on ambient surfaces constituted likely candidat

Complementary TCA cycle precursor supply enhances ammonia assimilation and nitrogen retention during vegetable waste composting.

Reactive nitrogen loss reduces nutrient recovery efficiency and the environmental performance of organic waste composting. Citric acid and pyruvic acid were evaluated separately and in combination as complementary tricarboxylic acid cycle precursors during vegetable waste composting. All treatments received the same amount of exogenous carbon and were adjusted to the same initial pH. Precursor amendments reduced cumulative NH3 emissions by 60%-76%. The combined treatment produced the lowest final nitrogen loss and increased final glutamate content and humic substance content by 25.2% and 31.7%

Effects of cultivation of herbaceous perennials on soil microbial community structure and nitrogen cycling functions.

This study aimed to elucidate the impacts of cultivating different herbaceous perennials on the rhizosphere microenvironment, nitrogen-cycling microbial communities, and functional genes in black soils of urban green spaces in Northeast China, thereby providing a scientific basis for rational urban plant configuration and interspecific differences in soil nutrient cycling. Focusing on five commonly utilized herbaceous perennials in Changchun (Lycopus lucidus [P-LL], Salvia japonica [P-SJ], Hemerocallis fulva [P-HF], Hosta ensata [P-HE], and Pseudolysimachion spicatum [P-PS]), this study integr

Nitrogen cycling throughout the distinct stages of oyster cultivation: From a multiple-isotope perspective.

Oyster aquaculture has expanded worldwide in recent decades as a highly productive ecosystem. In these areas, oysters contribute to the removal of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) from the water column by taking up large quantities of suspended particulate organic matter (POM), thereby playing a critical role in water purification. However, a quantitative description of nitrogen (N) cycling throughout the distinct stages of oyster cultivation in such areas is lacking. This study measured δ15N values in various N pools, i.e., ammonium (δ15N-NH4+), nitrate (δ15N-NO3-), and particulate N (δ15N-

The potential role of subseafloor fungi in driving the biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen under anaerobic conditions.

Fungi represent the dominant eukaryotic group of organisms in anoxic marine sedimentary ecosystems, ranging from a few centimeters to ~ 2.5 km below seafloor. However, little is known about how fungi can colonize anaerobic subseafloor environments for tens of millions of years and whether they play a role in elemental biogeochemical cycles. Based on metabolite detection, isotope tracer and gene analysis, we examined the anaerobic nitrogen conversion pathways of 19 fungal species (40 strains) isolated from1.3 to 2.5 km coal-bearing sediments below seafloor. Our results show for the first time t

Interactive effect of temperature and plant species on nitrogen cycling and treatment in stormwater biofiltration systems.

Stormwater biofiltration systems (also known as biofilters, bioretention, rain gardens) are engineered nature-based solutions, which help mitigate aquatic nitrogen pollution arising from storm runoff. These systems are being increasingly used in a range of climates across the world. A decline in treatment performance is frequently observed in cold weather conditions. While plant species comprise an important design factor influencing system performance, the effect of temperature on the fate of dissolved nitrogen forms, namely ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-), in the presence of different pla

Effect of vitamin A deficiency on nitrogen balance and hepatic urea cycle enzymes and intermediates in rats.

After 12 wk of feeding a 4-d nitrogen balance was carried out in 8 vitamin A--deficient and 8 pair-fed control rats to understand the effect of vitamin A deficiency on protein metabolism. Urea nitrogen (UN) was lower and amino nitrogen (AN) was higher in plasma of deficient animals than in pair-fed controls. No significant alteration in the nitrogen retention or in the general pattern of other nitrogen metabolites in plasma and urine was observed in vitamin A--deficient rats as compared to controls. However, there was a significant increase in the excretion of urinary ammonium nitrogen (Am-N)

Spatial Partitioning of Microbial Functional Potential Suggests Complex Nitrogen Cycling in a Subterranean Estuary.

Subterranean estuaries (STEs) are key bioreactors regulating the quantity and chemical composition of groundwater-derived nitrogen (N) reaching coastal ecosystems. Yet, the microbial controls on N-cycling within these groundwater-seawater mixing zones remain poorly understood. We investigated the spatio-temporal variations in microbial communities and their N-cycling potential within an alluvial Mediterranean STE with high N concentration. We explored changes in microbial abundance, heterotrophic activity, taxonomic composition, and the abundance of N-cycling genes across groundwater samples c

Emerging nitrogen-driven urban atmosphere control on aerosol iron dissolution for biogeochemical cycles.

Iron (Fe) is a critical micronutrient regulating marine productivity and the global carbon cycle, yet its atmospheric dissolution mechanisms remain debated for biogeochemical cycle. The prevailing "iron-sulfur coupling" paradigm has traditionally explained proton-promoted dissolution. However, disproportionate declines in sulfur dioxide relative to nitrogen oxides emissions have created a "low-sulfur, high-nitrogen" atmosphere over East Asia, raising questions about the role of nitric acid. Here, we develop a data-driven framework to elucidate nitric acid-driven Fe dissolution using the nitrat

Insights into soil microbial assemblages and nitrogen cycling function responses to conventional and biodegradable microplastics.

Biodegradable microplastics (MPs) are proposed as sustainable alternatives to conventional MPs, yet their distinct effects on soil microbial communities and ecological functions remain insufficiently understood. This study compares the impacts of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on soil microbial assemblages and nitrogen cycling. Fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse) activity was temporarily stimulated by 2 % (w/w) PLA and PVC MPs, while 7 % (w/w) PVC MPs initially inhibited FDAse activity before promoting it. PLA MPs (2 % and 7 %, w/w) dramat

Unveiling microplastic's role in nitrogen cycling: Metagenomic insights from estuarine sediment microcosms.

Marine microplastics (MPs) pollution, with rivers as a major source, leads to MPs accumulation in estuarine sediments, which are also nitrogen cycling hotspots. However, the impact of MPs on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments has rarely been documented. In this study, we conducted microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of commonly encountered polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs, with two MPs concentrations (0.3% and 3% wet sediment weight) based on environmental concentration considerations and dose-response effects, on sediment dissolved oxygen (DO) diffusion capacity and

Basic Characteristics of Ionic Liquid-Gated Graphene FET Sensors for Nitrogen Cycle Monitoring in Agricultural Soil.

Nitrogen-based fertilizers are crucial in agriculture for maintaining soil health and increasing crop yields. Soil microorganisms transform nitrogen from fertilizers into NO3--N, which is absorbed by crops. However, some nitrogen is converted to nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas with a warming potential about 300-times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). Agricultural activities are the main source of N2O emissions. Monitoring N2O can enhance soil health and optimize nitrogen fertilizer use, thereby supporting precision agriculture. To achieve this, we developed ionic liquid-gated graphene f

Gaseous nitrogen oxides stimulate cell cycle progression by retinoblastoma phosphorylation via activation of cyclins/Cdks [correction].

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are important indoor and outdoor air pollutants. Many studies have indicated that NOx gas causes lung tissue damage by its oxidation properties and its free radicals. In a previous study we demonstrated that NOx gas induced proliferation of human lung fibroblast MRC-5 cells. In this study we show that NOx gas stimulates MRC-5 cell proliferation by retinoblastoma (Rb) phosphorylation via activation of cyclin-cell division protein kinase (cdk) complexes [correction]. Western blot and immunoprecipitation data showed that NOx gas increased the expressions of cyclinA/cdk2, cyc

Impact of long-term nitrogen scavenger therapy on clinical outcome in individuals with urea cycle disorders.

Principles of long-term medical management in individuals with urea cycle disorders (UCDs) encompass (1) a low protein diet, (2) supplementation of arginine and/or citrulline along with essential amino acids, nutrients, vitamins and trace elements, and (3) use of nitrogen scavenging agents to reduce recurrent hyperammonemic events (HAEs). These principles aim at providing metabolic stability, elimimation of chronic complications, and achievement of normal development as well as growth. A retrospective comparative analysis was performed by studying 138 individuals with male ornithine transcarba

Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the sulfur cycle-associated Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) process.

Hong Kong has practiced seawater toilet flushing since 1958, saving 750,000 m(3) of freshwater every day. A high sulfate-to-COD ratio (>1.25 mg SO4(2-)/mg COD) in the saline sewage resulting from this practice has enabled us to develop the Sulfate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI(®)) process with minimal sludge production and oxygen demand. Recently, the SANI(®) process has been expanded to include Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) in an alternating anaerobic/limited-oxygen (LOS-EBPR) aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR). This paper presen

Interactions of microplastics with pesticides and anthelminthics mediate undesirable effects on microbial nitrogen cycling in agricultural soils.

Microplastics (MPs) frequently co-occur with pesticides and veterinary medicines in agricultural soils. However, their interactive effects on soil microbiota remain largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effects of three MP types (LDPE-, PBAT-, and starch-based), applied at two concentrations (0.01% and 0.1%), either alone or in combination with the fungicide pyraclostrobin and/or the anthelminthic albendazole (ABZ), on soil microbial functioning. Nitrate levels, nitrification rates, ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, and denitrifying bacteria served as indicators of perturbations on s
