Nocardia asteroides osteomyelitis.

Nocardia asteroides osteomyelitis has previously been described only in acutely ill patients. It may occur as an isolated event or part of the disease spectrum of disseminated nocardiosis. An 84 year old immune competent man with N. asteroides right tibial osteomyelitis had an unusual presentation, presumed mechanism of disease and outcome. His course affords an opportunity to review the literature on N. asteroides osteomyelitis and to discuss the unique features of his case.

Nocardia asteroides endophthalmitis.

A case of exogenous Nocardia asteroides endophthalmitis with impending corneal perforation was diagnosed by culture and successfully treated with vitrectomy, penetrating keratoplasty, and intraocular, topical, and systemic antimicrobial therapy. The patient regained excellent vision.

Nocardia asteroides keratitis.

Nocardia asteroides has been reported as the cause of keratitis in only 7 cases and of other ocular disease in another 12 cases. We report a case of N. asteroides keratitis that presented 3 weeks after rural trauma and progressed despite trials of appropriate antibiotics. Seven weeks after the origianl injury a successful conjunctival flap was placed over the cornea. The morphology and the sensitivity testing of N. asteroides to antibiotics appears necessary before reliable information can be obtained for clinical use. Moreover, our case did not show the relatively benign course of other repor…

Clinical and Radiographic Characteristics of Nocardia vs Non-Nocardia Brain Abscesses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis and treatment of CNS nocardiosis is challenging and often delayed, which increases morbidity and mortality. The primary objective was to compare the clinical and radiographic characteristics of patients with CNS nocardiosis with non-Nocardia bacterial brain abscesses. METHODS: We performed a case-control study of patients with brain abscesses diagnosed between 1998 and 2018 at a tertiary academic center. We identified 56 patients with brain MRI demonstrating brain abscess from the institutional imaging database: 14 with culture-confirmed nocardiosis and 42…

Nocardia glycosmidis, Nocardia aegles and Nocardia citri spp. nov., three novel endophytic actinomycetes isolated from the roots of Rutaceae plants.

In this study, three novel actinomycete strains, designated R6R-6ᵀ, R7R-8ᵀ and R16R-3ᵀ, were isolated from the roots of Glycosmis pentaphylla (Retz.) DC., Aegle marmelos (L.) Corrêa ex Roxb. and Citrus × aurantiifolia, respectively. The taxonomic status of these strains was evaluated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. All three strains produced short spore chains (three to five spores) with cylindrical spores on aerial mycelia and exhibited chemotaxonomic characteristics consistent with members of the genus Nocardia. These features included the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid and myco…

Primary lymphocutaneous nocardiosis caused by an unusual species of Nocardia: Nocardia transvalensis.

We present the first case of lymphocutaneous nocardiosis caused by Nocardia transvalensis and the seventh report of infection caused by this microorganism. The patient was allergic to sulfonamides but responded to amikacin and cefotaxime and later to erythromycin. The treatment and criteria for differentiation of cutaneous Nocardia species infection are discussed.
