Psychophysiological reactions to noise as modified by personal control over noise intensity.

Effects of personal control over noise intensity were studied in experimental situations where subjects performed mental arithmetic under noise exposure. Every other subject was offered a choice between noise intensities, and the next subject, serving as his yoked partner, had to submit to the same noise. Mean measures of catecholamine and cortisol excretion, and of heart rate and subjective effort and discomfort showed that subjects were more aroused in the yoked situation. There were, however, considerable interindividual differences, subjects classified as 'internals' or 'externals' on the

Road tunnel noise: monitoring, prediction and evaluation of noise-induced hearing loss.

Incessant increases in vehicles and massive road networks lead to traffic-related problems and noise pollution. Road tunnels are considered a more feasible and effective solution for solving traffic problems. Compared to other traffic noise abatement strategies, road tunnels also offer enormous benefits to urban mass transit systems. However, the road tunnels that are non-complying with the design and safety standards negatively impact commuters' health of being exposed to the high noise level inside the tunnel, particularly for road tunnels above 500 m in length. The study aims to evaluate th

Noise Monitoring Using Noise Contour Map in Automotive Part Industry in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The Production of the car suspension system generates a lot of noise pollution. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a noise contour map in the eight departments (annealing, stud rough, pinhole, welding machine, stud burn, assembly, Q-gate, and packing) of the automotive part industry in Thailand. METHODS: The noise levels at 653 points distributed over the production area are measured using a sound level meter. A sound level meter was used to estimate and bring the value obtained from the measurement to create a noise contour map with the Surfer program using an inverse dist

Noise Outcomes in Servicemembers Epidemiology (NOISE) Study: Design, Methods, and Baseline Results.

OBJECTIVES: Military Service members and Veterans commonly report hearing loss and tinnitus, both of which can result in significant disability. During military service, Service members are exposed to many different types of loud noise, which is strongly associated with hearing loss and tinnitus. Other military-related exposures, such as chemicals and traumatic brain injury (TBI), are also linked with auditory problems. The purpose of the "Noise Outcomes in Servicemembers Epidemiology" (NOISE) study is to gather information from Active-Duty Service members and recently separated Veterans about

Noise Exposure May Diminish the Musician Advantage for Perceiving Speech in Noise.

OBJECTIVE: Although numerous studies have shown that musicians have better speech perception in noise (SPIN) compared to nonmusicians, other studies have not replicated the "musician advantage for SPIN." One factor that has not been adequately addressed in previous studies is how musicians' SPIN is affected by routine exposure to high levels of sound. We hypothesized that such exposure diminishes the musician advantage for SPIN. DESIGN: Environmental sound levels were measured continuously for 1 week via body-worn noise dosimeters in 56 college students with diverse musical backgrounds and cl

Survey of noise exposure and background noise in call centers using headphones.

Call centers represent one of the fastest growing industries. However, there are health and safety hazards unique to this new industry. One of these potential hazards is hearing impairment caused by headsets. In this study, noise exposure assessment was performed at 21 call centers and for 117 operators. Although call center background noise does not contribute to noise exposure, it impacts working conditions and influences the headset volume setting. It was therefore measured at the same time as exposure to noise. Results revealed that although the risk of hearing impairment was generally low

Speech recognition in noise before and after a work-day's noise exposure.

A common complaint after a work-shift in high noise levels is fatigue, in the sense that listening to other people's spoken messages requires more effort than when well rested. The purpose of this study was to examine if this could be verified as reduced speech recognition in noise due to auditory fatigue. Speech recognition in noise, using low-redundancy sentence material, as well as pure-tone hearing thresholds were tested on 13 subjects at the beginning and end of a 7-8 hours work-shift with equivalent noise levels in the range 78-90 dBA as measured by personal noise dose meters. Seven of t

The interaction of noise and aspirin in the chick basilar papilla. Noise and aspirin toxicity.

The possible synergism between noise and aspirin for causing cochlear damage was examined histologically. Six chicks fed aspirin for five days and five chicks fed a normal diet only were paired and placed in sound chambers. They were exposed to a 1500-Hz tone at 115 dB sound pressure level for eight hours. The mean serum salicylate level just before noise exposure was 24 mg/dL (1.74 mmol/L). Ten days later they were killed, and the temporal bones were processed. Hair cell counts were made at 100-microns intervals throughout the length of the basilar papilla (cochlea). The noise produced a disc

Noise distracts foraging bats.

Predators frequently must detect and localize their prey in challenging environments. Noisy environments have been prevalent across the evolutionary history of predator-prey relationships, but now with increasing anthropogenic activities noise is becoming a more prominent feature of many landscapes. Here, we use the gleaning pallid bat, Antrozous pallidus, to investigate the mechanism by which noise disrupts hunting behaviour. Noise can primarily function to mask-obscure by spectrally overlapping a cue of interest, or distract-occupy an animal's attentional or other cognitive resources. Using

Noise-induced hearing loss.

Hearing loss caused by exposure to recreational and occupational noise results in devastating disability that is virtually 100 percent preventable. Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common form of sensorineural hearing deficit, after presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). Shearing forces caused by any sound have an impact on the stereocilia of the hair cells of the basilar membrane of the cochlea; when excessive, these forces can cause cell death. Avoiding noise exposure stops further progression of the damage. Noise-induced hearing loss can be prevented by avoiding excessive nois

[Noise: neuro-endocrine aspects].

Experimental study of neuro-endocrinological effects of noise stress shows neuro-mediator modifications. Exposure to stress induces a marked stimulation of the adrenergic structures which increases plasma concentrations of ACTH and glucosteroids. The increased secretion of the cortico-releasing factor (CRT) from the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system mediates a complex cascade in which other neuro-modulators also participate. Within the CNS, CRF activates the sympathetic nervous system, raising plasma concentrations of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine. These neuro-mediator and endocrine variations

[Cardiovascular effects of noise].

The circulatory response to noise is dominated by a peripheral blood vessels vasoconstriction, of greater magnitude when asleep than awake. Noise of lower frequency seems more able to produce this response. With repetition of the noise, adaptation and tolerance to it quickly appears. Meanwhile prolonged high level noise exposition induces an increasing prevalence of arterial hypertension among industrial workers. This increase is also clearly found in residential communities living near airports. Long-term exposure to noise is a dangerous nuisance, that can lead to an increase in arterial bloo

[Evaluation of impulse noise].

The assessment of the risk of hearing loss due to impulse-weighted sound levels in working places leads to wrong results at often intermittent noise exposures, since the energy-equivalent continuous noise level does not consider the recovering of hearing due to noise pauses. In these cases the LAeq without impulse addition can lead to a correct assessment, as Pfeiffer and Maue demonstrated for the construction professions, but it cannot be excluded that LAeq on the one side can lead to underestimation of the risk of hearing loss at continuous exposure to impulse noise, on the other side even t

Impulse noise: critical review.

A review of the last 10 years of research on impulse noise reveals certain insights and perspectives on the biological and audiological effects of exposures to impulse noise. First, impulse noise may damage the cochlea by direct mechanical processes. Second, after exposure to impulse noise, hearing may recover in an erratic, nonmonotonic pattern. Third, even though the existing damage-risk criteria evaluate impulse noise in terms of level, duration, and number, often parameters such as temporal pattern, waveform, and rise time are also important in the production of a hearing loss. Fourth, the

Circulatory effects of noise.

Thirteen patients with mild essential hypertension, mean age 44 years (range 21-59), were studied during "stress" before and after postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptor blockade and combined postsynaptic alpha- and non-selective beta-adrenoceptor blockade. Loud broad band noise (100 dBA for 10 min) was used as the stress stimulus. Exposure to noise caused a significant increase in systolic (7%, p less than 0.05), diastolic (9%, p less than 0.01) and mean arterial pressure (6%, p less than 0.01). The blood pressure elevation was caused by an increase in total peripheral resistance (12%, p less than 0

Noise in small industry.

Exposure to noise, the availability and the use of ear protectors, and the adequacy of the medical surveillance of noise-exposed workers were surveyed in the small industry of Finland in order to provide information for the development of occupational health care. One hundred workplaces were chosen by random sampling to represent the small industry (personnel 5-49) in the province of Uusimaa. About a third (32%) of the workers (n = 1181) were exposed to a noise level of at least 85 dB (leq) when at work. However, the prevalence of noise exposure varied greatly, from 3 to 82% according to the t

Cardiovascular effects of noise.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute hemodynamic and hormonal effects induced by short-term exposure to loud noise in man. Loud noise (95 dBA or 100 dBA) caused an increase in blood-pressure in healthy normotensive subjects as well as in patients with essential hypertension. The blood pressure elevation was caused by vasoconstriction in patients with essential hypertension and in normotensive subjects with a positive family history of hypertension, while the blood pressure response in normotensive subjects without a family history of hypertension was due mainly to an increase in

Airport noise and teratogenesis.

It has been suggested that exposures to high-noise levels near major airports may cause increased incidence of birth defects in the offspring of parents residing near these airports. Using data gathered in Metropolitan Atlanta during 1970 to 1972, we compared the rates of seventeen categories of defects in high- and low-noise census tracts. No significant differences were observed. However, when we subdivided the category of central nervous system defects into several subcategories of specific defects, we noted a significantly increased incidence of spina bifida without hydrocephalus in the hi
