Absolute risk reduction in osteoporosis: assessing treatment efficacy by number needed to treat.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a chronic condition due to decreased bone mass, leading to reduced bone strength and increased fracture risk. Currently available pharmacological treatments include antiresorptive agents (bisphosphonates and raloxifene) and bone-forming agents (strontium ranelate and two different parathyroid peptides). Comparison via reduction in relative risk of fracture may produce artificially high reductions in fracture risk for some agents. Responder analysis based on absolute risk reduction (ARR, the arithmetic difference between events rates with and without treatment ove

Concept of the Number Needed to Treat for the Analysis of Pain Relief Outcomes in Patients Treated with Spinal Cord Stimulation.

In the rapidly evolving field of spinal cord stimulation (SCS), measures of treatment effects are needed to help understand the benefits of new therapies. The present article elaborates the number needed to treat (NNT) concept and applies it to the SCS field. We reviewed the basic theory of the NNT, its calculation method, and its application to historical controlled trials of SCS. We searched the literature for controlled studies with ≥20 implanted SCS patients with chronic axial back and/or leg pain followed for ≥3 months and a reported responder rate defined as ≥50% pain relief. Relevant da

Skeletal-related events in metastatic prostate cancer and the number needed to treat: a critical consideration.

PURPOSE: With stage migration induced by early diagnosis of prostate-specific antigen, the course of disease for prostate cancer (PCa) patients has changed. Increasingly, patients undergo long-term androgen ablation with consecutive risks including osteoporosis and pathologic fractures. A recent randomized trial found that the RANK ligand inhibitor denosumab was more effective preventing skeletal-related events in patients with metastatic PCa as compared to treatment with the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid. This improved efficacy was linked to an increase of side effects. METHODS: The present

Clinical efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids in equine asthma: A meta-analysis and number needed to treat.

Equine asthma, a prevalent chronic inflammatory condition affecting the equine population, significantly compromises the performance and quality of life in affected horses. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are often the first-line pharmacological intervention due to their potent anti-inflammatory properties. This meta-analysis investigates the clinical efficacy of ICS in treating equine asthma, emphasizing the number needed to treat (NNT) and the likelihood of achieving a clinical response. A comprehensive literature search identified relevant studies comparing ICS with placebo (PCB) controlled t

Rhythm vs. rate control of atrial fibrillation meta-analysed by number needed to treat.

BACKGROUND: Whenever feasible, rhythm control of atrial fibrillation (AF) was generally preferred over rate control, in the belief that it offered better symptomatic relief and quality of life, and eliminated the need for anticoagulation. However, recent trials appear to challenge these assumptions. AIMS: To explore the desirability of rhythm vs. rate control of AF by systematic review of pertinent, published, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and a meta-analysis by number needed to treat (NNT) year(-1), with respect to diverse clinically important outcomes. METHODS: RCTs of outcome primar

Benefit of Topical Combination Therapy for Acne: Analyzing Effect Size Using Number Needed to Treat.

BACKGROUND: Topical acne trials often are confounded by high vehicle response rates and differing outcome measures, making it difficult to compare treatments. Number needed to treat (NNT) can be a simple, clinically meaningful way to indirectly compare treatment options without head-to-head data. NNT is the number of patients who need to be treated with an intervention to observe one additional patient successfully achieving a desired outcome versus vehicle/placebo. While treatment attributes such as adverse events may not be captured, lower NNT is a good indicator of a more effective treatmen

Potassium citrate for stone prevention - Quantifying benefit through the number needed to treat: A narrative review.

To define how reliable the benefits of potassium citrate (KCit) for stone prevention are framing this in terms of the number needed to treat (NNT). A targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was conducted through January 2025. For studies reporting recurrence rates in treatment and control groups, absolute risk reduction (ARR) and NNT were calculated. Two pivotal randomized trials in recurrent calcium stone formers demonstrated large ARRs with KCit or potassium-magnesium citrate, lowering 3-year recurrence rates from approximately 60%-80% in placebo groups to 10%-30%

The Number Needed to Treat for Music as a Medicine against Perioperative Anxiety: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Music intervention is effective in reducing perioperative anxiety, which occurs in a majority of hospitalized surgical patients. A calculated Number Needed to Treat (NNT) provides an intuitive means of conveying the effectiveness of an intervention that can help clinicians decide whether or not to implement said intervention. This study aimed to calculate an NNT to provide extra context to help clinicians consider the implementation of music intervention. METHODS: To calculate the NNT of music intervention for perioperative anxiety, a systematic review and meta-analysis were perfo
