Diuretics relieve fluid overload by increasing the volume of urine passed and decreasing the volume of fluid in the body. The consequent challenges to fluid balance require careful observation if dehydration and therapeutic failure are to be avoided. As fluid is lost, so are electrolytes. The subsequent biochemical changes may have adverse effects on patients, however with careful medication monitoring, most of these effects can be detected and prevented.

One would think that today's exposure of the topic of sexuality in the electronic and print media would elevate the medical professional's comfort level with communication regarding sexuality issues. However, writers continue to comment on clinician discomfort or lack of discussion with their patients about sexual concerns and anxieties. Many patients want to learn about the implications of their treatment and medications on their sexuality. Nurses who care for chronically ill patients may help foster a more positive self-esteem for the patient, and may influence patient-partner attitudes abou

The most common disorders within the category of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) are the Autistic Disorders. In the 1994 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV, Asperger's Disorder became a distinct diagnosis within the Autistic category, as part of the disorders first diagnosed in childhood and adolescence. The terms Asperger's Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome are used interchangeably. Attention to and knowledge of Asperger's Syndrome (AS) are necessary to differentiate it from closely related disorders that have overlapping symptoms. There is much discussion about different definitions

Anesthetics have been administered for centuries, from opium poppy and leaches, to today's sophisticated agents and techniques. In the United States, nurses have been delivering safe, professional, cost-effective care for well over 100 years. Nurse anesthetists have weathered the storms of war and politics to become a strong force in the current health care arena. The following is a brief overview of their interesting journey.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which child-rearing practices are associated with nursing caries.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Hospital-based general pediatric clinic.
PARTICIPANTS: Sequential sample of 110 healthy children aged 18 to 36 months.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Feeding practices of children, limit-setting issues, and familial dental health were determined by maternal interview. Nursing caries were diagnosed by dental examination.
RESULTS: Nursing caries were found in 22 (20%) of the children. Ninety percent of children with and without caries were bottle-feeding at 12 and 18 months o

The treatment of tobacco and cannabis use in psychiatry is a major public health issue. These substances, used to manage psychiatric symptoms, aggravate pre-existing disorders and reduce the effectiveness of treatments. Nurses offer comprehensive, integrated support that takes into account dual pathology, combining an experiential approach, risk and harm reduction, early detection and brief intervention, and support for change, while collaborating with various specialized stakeholders.

Genomic testing can support the identification of abnormalities and developmental changes in patients' genes. Advances in technology and national infrastructure have led to increased access to genomic testing that can inform decisions about patient care. Care pathways are becoming increasingly personalised based on genomic information and nursing practice has evolved in line with these developments. All nurses should have sufficient knowledge about genomics to perform their role effectively. This article aims to enhance nurses' understanding of genomics and explains its benefits in healthcare

BACKGROUND: Wound management constitutes an important public health issue. Health authorities have published numerous recommendations on wound cleansing and dressing. The French law currently authorizes nurses to prescribe wound care with a doctor's agreement. Further, they have an essential role in wound management. In this study, we evaluate nurses' behavior in wound cleansing in outpatients and in hospital settings.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The survey was conducted from 4/1/11 to 5/6/11 in 111 nurses working at Argenteuil Hospital and in 299 nurses with outpatient activity within two administ

Current nursing literature recognizes the need to honor the concept of ambiguity. Nurses experience uncertainty with handling or honoring complexity and ambiguity when confronted with times of struggle. Traditional models of care fall short as patients and families define their expectations of the healthcare system. Nurses bear witness to the discomfort caused by the unknown in their daily practice. They are challenged to address their feelings, unsure of what to anticipate, what to say, or how to respond to their patients. Uncertainty diminishes the opportunity for meaningful dialogue between

Clinical practice guidelines are an important tool for improving quality of care. This study determined whether and how guidelines are being used in nursing homes. We surveyed staff at 36 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) nursing homes. Employees were asked whether they were familiar with guidelines as well as whether 5 specific guidelines had been read, were available, and had been adopted. Among 1065 respondents (60% of those surveyed), 79% reported familiarity with guidelines. The proportion of staff at a facility reporting adoption was generally less than 50%. Those nursing homes in whic

This paper considers the ways in which the nursing handover involves a complex network of communication that impacts on nursing interactions. The critical ethnographic study upon which this paper is based involved a research group of six nurses who worked in one critical care unit. Data-collection methods involved professional journalling, participant observation, and individual and focus group interviews. The nursing handover took on many forms and served different purposes. At the start of a shift, the nurse coordinator of the previous shift presented a 'global' handover of all patients to o

This article provides the nurse practitioner with a concise and accurate reference for the evaluation of children with hematuria, proteinuria, and hypertension. Although the incidence of these disorders in children is lower than in adults, they are not uncommon. The nurse practitioner must be able to accurately assess the results of a urinalysis and measure and interpret blood pressure readings in children. A discussion of when to refer children with signs and symptoms of serious disease; and how to educate patients and families in order to promote children's health is also provided.

New developments in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technology are increasing understanding of the role of genetics in health and disease. This kind of health information requires that perioperative nurses develop new skills and roles that will enhance the quality of genetic health care they provide to patients, particularly with regard to managing genetic information. Perioperative nurses expand their scope of practice to incorporate a genetic focus into health assessment, patient education, and patient support as they assimilate new genetic information into their daily lives. Perioperative nurse

The quality of nursing care depends not only on the knowledge and skill of practitioners, but also on the equipment provided for their use. The availability and storage of urinary catheters was recorded in two "point prevalence" surveys in one District Health Authority. The numbers of catheters available in different locations were not related to the prevalence or "predicted incidence" of catheterized patients. The second survey documented evidence of improvements in practice, in particular a reduction in excessive and/or out-of-date stocks; a reduction in damaged stock; an increased availabil
