INTRODUCTION: Thymic tumors including thymomas, thymic carcinomas, and thymic carcinoid tumors are rare tumors with an incidence of 0.13/100,000.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was performed to identify recent findings on epidemiology, classification, and various therapeutic approaches.
RESULTS: These tumors with a wide spectrum of histologic and biologic features may be clinically unapparent for a long time or show a very aggressive behavior with local invasion and distant metastases. Surgical resection is the mainstay in stage I and II thymomas, whereas in stage III thymomas an

BACKGROUND: In the literature no specific dermoscopic criteria have been described for the diagnosis of Bowen's disease (BD).
OBJECTIVE/AIM: To assess the morphological findings of BD seen under dermoscopic observation.
METHODS: Clinical and dermoscopic images of 14 patients affected by BD with various amount of pigmentation were obtained by means of Heine Dermaphot. Dermoscopic images were analysed by experienced observers applying the modified pattern analysis.
RESULTS: The most frequently occurring dermoscopic features were found to be: multicomponent pattern (100%); atypical vascular st…

Venous aneurysms are infrequent vascular alterations. Their origin is not well known, but pathologic study reveals probably a similar natural history than the arterial aneurysms. Their clinical significance arises from the complications they can originate, specially in certain locations, which include pulmonary embolism, and, on the other hand, differential diagnosis with certain malignant pathologies may be necessary, depending upon the clinical context. A patient is presented whose radiographic findings, in association with clinical factors, led to surgical exploration to rule out malignant

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare neurological complication of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. As its clinical presentation is aspe … gical findings ruled out spongiform encephalopathy and disclosed aspecific activated microglia. Our observation suggests that this process could be involved in the pathogenesis of HE. Even in the absence of clinical dysthyroidism, HE diagnosis has to be suspected in the settings of acute encephalopathy associated with seric antithyroid antibodies.

Anna Freud taught the importance of observation, suggesting that students jot down their observations in a systematic manner. She urged observers to amplify their notes, which were later discussed in meetings. Observations made in the nursery school, for example, were discussed afterwards and classified in a file under appropriate headings somewhat similar to the technique used at the Anna Freud Centre. In this paper I describe my observations of a subject as an infant and a toddler with special reference to the way she looked intensely at the world around her. To some degree, the way she hers…

Twenty cases of meconium peritonitis were found between September 1980 and March 1988 at Mackay Memorial Hospital. The male to female ratio was 1.5 to 1. Six of the 20 cases involved premature babies. The great majority presented symptoms and signs before 5 days old, but one case was not diagnosed until 13 months of age. Polyhydramnios of the mother was found in six cases (30%). Abdominal distension was the universal symptom in all 20 cases. Hydrocele was noticed in 8 of the 12 male babies. In seven cases (35%) radiological examination showed abdominal calcifications. All patients underwent su

Sepsis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in newborn infants. From January 1983 to April 1988, 166 cases of neonatal sepsis with positive blood cultures were collected at V.G.H.--Taichung. Among them 140 newborn babies were delivered at private clinic (outborn babies), 26 cases were inborn babies. Of the inborn babies, 20 cases (76.9%) were early onset sepsis (the onset of illness within 96 hours of life) and 6 cases (23.1%) were late onset sepsis (the onset of illness beyond 96 hours of life). Off the outborn babies, 64 cases (45.7%) were early onset sepsis and 76 cases (5

A young active histoid nodule from an untreated patient with lepromatous leprosy was examined by electron microscopy. The only area where spindle-shaped cells predominated was near the pseudocapsule, and these cells were the only ones that were associated with the presence of collagen. The main mass of the granuloma was composed of young macrophages which showed evidence of a higher cell turnover rate than in ordinary lepromatous leprosy. Among the macrophages were plasmacytoid cells. Histoid lesions are thought to be essentially hyperactive, but the nature of the stimulus is unknown.
