Perfluorohexyloctane Ophthalmic Solution: A Review in Dry Eye Disease.

Perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution (Miebo®) is a single-entity, water-, steroid- and preservative-free, first-in-class semifluorinated alkane that is approved in the USA for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). DED is often linked with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which causes an excessive evaporation of tears. Perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film and inhibits tear evaporation by forming a monolayer at the air-liquid interface. In the phase III GOBI and MOJAVE trials in adults with DED associated with MGD,

[Anaphylactic shock by ophthalmic wash solution containing chlorhexidine].

A 58 year-old male patient developed anaphylactic shock, possibly due to the use of chlorhexidine as ophthalmic wash solution. He was successfully resuscitated without any sequelae. The patient had increased levels of both histamine and tryptase. The skin test for allergy resulted in strong positive to chlorhexidine. There have been many reports regarding severe adverse reactions associated with use of chlorhexidine. It is necessary to pay attention to anaphylactic shock due to chlorhexidine.

The effects of ophthalmic solutions on the transmission of light through hydrogel lenses.

We incubated ten different hydrogel lens materials in nine different artificial tear preparations and in cromolyn sodium (Opticrom) 4% at 35 degrees C for a period of 6 months. The subsequent ability of these hydrogel materials to transmit visible light was analyzed spectrophotometrically as a measure of each solution's compatibility with the different hydrogel materials. Ultra Tears solution was found to be significantly incompatible with four of the hydrogel materials: tetrafilcon A, deltafilcon A, phemfilcon A, and polymacon. Seven other solution/hydrogel combinations had relatively high ab

Corneal epithelial permeability after instillation of ophthalmic solutions containing local anaesthetics and preservatives.

The effect of the local anaesthetics oxybuprocaine (OBu) and tetracaine (Tetra) and the preservatives chlorhexidine (CH) and benzalkonium chloride (BAK) on corneal epithelial permeability was studied by fluorophotometry in normal human eyes. Five instillations of one drop ophthalmic solution of the compounds were administered to one eye at 2-minute intervals; a control solution was instilled into the fellow eye. The increase in corneal epithelial permeability, expressed as the permeability ratio between the treated and control eye, was not significant after instillation of the anaesthetics. Th

Fixed drug eruption induced by topical olopatadine ophthalmic solution.

Fixed drug eruption (FDE) usually develops after oral administration and is described as a cutaneous reaction recurring at the same location each time the drug is taken. Olopatadine is both a H1 histamine receptor antagonist and a mast cell stabilizer, indicated for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Here, we report a 14-year-old male patient who developed FDE localised on the lateral side of periorbital rim bilaterally, whilst applying olopatadine 0.1% ophthalmic solution for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. As far as we know, FDE due to olopatadine has not been previously rep

A case of cystoid macular edema associated with latanoprost ophthalmic solution.

BACKGROUND: Although there have been reports of adverse effects after use, it is unclear whether latanoprost ophthalmic solution contributes to the development of cystoid macular edema (CME). CASE: A 71-year-old man underwent lens extraction, the insertion of an intraocular lens, and vitrectomy for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with lens subluxation in the left eye. After the surgery, antiglaucoma ophthalmic solutions controlled IOP well for over a year, maintaining good visual acuity with no abnormalities in the fundus. OBSERVATIONS: Two months after the previously prescrib…
