An in vitro assessment of the influences of different wire materials and bracket systems when correcting dental crowding.

A recently developed orthodontic wire alloy known as GUMMETAL® is claimed to deliver more physiological forces to correct dental mispositioning. However, its mechanical characteristics have not been fully characterized yet. This study aimed to determine and compare the elastic properties of different wire alloys, such as nickel-titanium (NiTi), stainless steel (SS), and GUMMETAL®, and assess their unloading forces when combined with either conventional or self-ligating brackets (CL and SL) when correcting dental crowding. All wires had a 0.016″ cross-section diameter. A three-point bending tes

Comparison of Surface Roughness of Different Orthodontic Archwires: Atomic Force Microscopic Study.

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness (SR) of dental components is significant because it impacts the surface area of the contact surface, which in turn affects corrosion behavior and biological compatibility. Orthodontic archwires (OA) with SR can affect the coefficient of friction, which in turn affects how effectively sliding biomechanics work and how the orthodontic appliance works efficiently. AIM: The objectives of the present investigation were to examine the SR of five distinct kinds of OA using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and to assess the merits of using AFM to analyze orthodontic mate

All the things I knew were true about contact dermatitis that aren't.

Twenty-five years of experience in evaluating people with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis has taught me that many of my preconceived notions were false. No patients are more challenging and interesting to investigate or more rewarding to help than those with long-standing histories of undiagnosed contact dermatitis. Furious resolve during investigation coupled with a willingness to be proven wrong and to find the unexpected is most likely to result in a successful outcome for patients with contact dermatitis.

Innovative Treatment Approach: Multiple Variability (MV) Loop Intervention for Angle Class I Malocclusion with Dewey's Type 2 Modification: A Case Report.

Proclination of anteriors is significantly found in developing malocclusions and affecting both aesthetics and function. In patients with protrusions or crowding, extraction therapy is often necessary. Orthodontic treatment is initiated with the extraction of maxillary first premolars to address the protrusions or crowding and achieve a harmonious occlusion. There are two ways to retract anteriors during extraction space closure: friction or frictionless. The present case report explains the innovative treatment approach for the correction of anterior protrusion using multiple variability (MV)

Orthodontic Treatment of an Adult Maxillomandibular Protrusion Case with Impacted Mandibular Second Molars Using the Physiologic Anchorage Spee-wire System: a Case Report.

Impaction of mandibular second molars should be resolved as soon as possible once diagnosed, since it may lead to many functional, periodontal, hygienic and endodontic problems. Treatment options for impacted second molars include orthodontic-assisted eruption following surgical exposure, surgical uprighting and, in some cases, surgical extraction with possible subsequent implant placement if the tooth is deemed non-restorable or the patient prefers an implant restoration. This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 21-year-old woman with maxillomandibular protrusion and impacted

Wear comparison of thermoplastic materials used for orthodontic retainers.

Clear thermoplastic retainers are an alternative to fixed lingual retainers and removable Hawley appliances. However, thermoplastic retainers have demonstrated poor wear resistance and durability after only a few months of use. In this study, a simulated wear device was used to compare the wear of different thermoplastic materials used for orthodontic retainers. Three thermoplastic products were evaluated: C+ (Raintree Essix, New Orleans, La),.040-in Invisacryl C (Great Lakes Orthodontics, Towanda, NY), and.040-in TR sheet material (Bay Dental Direct, Bay City, Mich). Twenty specimens were fab

The clinical value of digital occlusal analysis in the treatment of patients with temporomandibular disorders. A review of the literature.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a muscular subset of temporomandibular joint disorders, that can cause orofacial pain. They can be triggered by overactive masticatory muscles due to prolonged disclusion times (DT), occlusal interferences, and occlusal surface friction. Regarding diagnostics, digital occlusal analysis systems are used to determine the parameters of opposing tooth contact and pressure, the ratio of forces on the right and left sides of the oral cavity, to accurately calculate disclusion and occlusion times, and to precisely measure resultant force during maximum and partia

Relationship between initial crowding and interproximal force during retention phase.

This study investigated the change in interproximal force (IPF) in mandibular anterior teeth during retention and the relationship between the irregularity index before orthodontic treatment and the IPF. The effect that an erupting third molar had on IPF was also examined. Forty treated patients (40 with extraction of four bicuspids) were followed for 18 months during the retention phase. The irregularity index was determined from initial plaster casts. The total IPF was determined by measuring the interdental frictional forces at the mandibular anterior teeth by withdrawing a metal strip. The

Correction of horizontal and vertical discrepancies with a new interactive self-ligating bracket system: the Quick system.

In the past 10 years, self-ligating brackets have captured the interest of many clinicians and enjoyed increasing popularity. These brackets have been developed to overcome the disadvantages of stainless steel or elastomeric ligatures in terms of ergonomics, efficiency, deformation, discoloration, plaque accumulation, and friction. A self-ligating bracket does not require any type of ligature because it is has a mechanical device that opens and closes the edgewise slot. Secure archwire engagement may be accomplished by a built-in clip. Depending on the interaction between the bracket and archw
