Unusual orthodontic correction of bilateral maxillary canine-first premolar transposition.

Tooth transposition is a subject that intrigues orthodontists because of the associated treatment planning. Approximately 0.3-0.4% of the population has this type of tooth disharmony, and in the literature, most authors are in disagreement about the treatment approach. In this article, a case is presented of bilaterally maxillary canine-first premolar transposition associated with bilaterally upper lateral incisor agenesis treated in a very unusual way. The transposed teeth were orthodontically reversed to their normal sequence and the missing lateral incisor spaces closed. We choose this appr

An American Board of Orthodontics case report. Correction of a Class III mandibular prognathism and asymmetry through orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.

The Class III malocclusion with mandibular prognathism can involve many factors, among which are excessive mandibular growth, underdevelopment of the maxilla, environmental factors, and trauma to the jaws. The correction of this malocclusion can involve an orthodontic or a combined orthodontic-orthognathic approach. Skeletal asymmetries can complicate this situation, making treatment either more difficult, more complicated, or both. This case presentation involves treatment with a combined orthodontic-orthognathic approach. [This case was presented to the American Board of Orthodontics in part

Evaluation of orthodontic habits regarding the use of miniplates in the correction of Skeletal Class III.

AIMS: To determine the habits of Orthodontists in the management of moderate skeletal class III patients by using miniplates, and to assess the relationship between the factors that may hinder the implementation of such treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire was carried out using the Google Form® platform, which included 18 questions relating to the seniority of the practice of the orthodontists, the preferential treatment, the difficulties encountered, the results obtained, and the frequency of a relapse. RESULTS: Experienced orthodontists (more than 10 years) treated skeletal cla

Combined orthodontic and surgical open bite correction: Principles for success. Part 2.

OBJECTIVES: To present a clinical description of the team's treatment techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Part 1, 30 patients underwent segmental maxillary orthodontics, multisegment Le Fort I, and bilateral sagittal osteotomies of the mandible. Part 1 reported excellent occlusal stability at a mean follow-up of 49.43 months (range, 36-92 months). Cases presented in Part 2 were selected based on availability of excellent technique photographs. The same techniques described in Part 2 cases were used on all Part 1 patients. RESULTS: The coordination of arch widths and forms, overbite, overje

Orthodontic correction of severe Class II malocclusion in a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex disorder that affects multiple systems and may cause craniofacial and dentofacial abnormalities. However, there is still a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the progress of orthodontic treatment in patients with PWS. This case report describes the successful orthodontic treatment of a patient with PWS. A girl, 9 years 0 months of age, who had been diagnosed with PWS had protruding maxillary incisors and a convex profile. Her malocclusion was due to the posteriorly positioned mandible. Screening tests for sleep apnea syndrome showed that she h

Gulossectomy and Skeletal Anchorage as Aajuncts to Orthodontic Correction of a Severe Open Bite Case.

Etiology of open bite malocclusion is multifactorial; therefore, elimination of the main etiologic factor is the key for successful treatment. Tongue size and posture can cause open bite; thus, glossectomy is one of the treatment choices in severe cases. A 19 year old girl with a chief complaint of extra-large tongue and anterior open bite due to hemangioma was referred to us. Hemangioma removal and partial glossectomy were performed. With no other intervention, the anterior open bite decreased 10 millimeters within 3 years. Since the patient refused orthognathic surgery, the remaining maloccl

Dental midline correction using two component C-orthodontic mini-implant.

OBJECTIVES: Correction of dental origin asymmetry with conventional orthodontic mechanics is at risk of developing side effects because of the inherent asymmetric nature of tooth-borne anchorage-based asymmetric mechanics. Recently, the concept of skeletal anchorage using mini-implants has been introduced in the field of orthodontics and have shown successful results. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the clinical application of osseointegration of surface treated two component mini-implants (C-implant) in managing dental midline correction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The characteristics an

Lingual orthodontic treatment and absolute anchorage to correct an impacted maxillary canine in an adult.

There are 2 major drawbacks to the classic orthodontic-surgical approach for resolution of impacted teeth in adults: appearance and duration of treatment. This case report illustrates the lingual orthodontic treatment of an adult with an impacted maxillary canine; absolute anchorage was achieved with a miniscrew placed in the palate. The combination of invisible appliances and a nondental anchorage system is particularly useful in adults and should make treatment available to more patients.

Vertical maxillary deficiency with cleidocranial dysplasia. Diagnostic findings and surgical-orthodontic correction.

An anatomic pattern of dentofacial deformity consistent with the diagnosis of vertical maxillary deficiency (short face syndrome, Type 2) was observed in a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia. Detailed description of diagnostic findings and the coordinated sequence of surgical-orthodontic care over a 16-month period of follow-up are presented. An 11 mm lengthening of facial height was obtained. Results of surgical and orthodontic stability are presented. A relationship between conditions with anodontia or pseudo-anodontia and vertical maxillary deficiency is hypothesized.

Surgical-orthodontic correction of maxillary retrusion by Le Fort I osteotomy and proplast.

The combined efforts of the orthodontist and surgeon are necessary for successful treatment of most patients with maxillary retrusion. Both the aesthetic and functional manifestations of this dento-facial deformity can usually be effectively treated by maxillary advancement, augmentation of the midfacial region and orthodontics. Treatment planning, pre- and post-surgical orthodontic treatment principles, and surgical considerations in treating 25 adults with maxillary retrusion are described and illustrated. Surgical advancement of the maxilla by Le Fort I osteotomy, proper alignment of the te

[Orthodontic effects of tooth injury to the permanent and temporary incisors of children and the adolescent [corrected].

Traumatisms on the deciduous upper incisors could induce orthodontic indirect consequences on the permanent germ, dependent on his growth level and his malleability, dependent on connection between the root of deciduous incisor and the crown of permanent germ and according to the type of traumatism. According to those various data, it should be observed on the permanent incisor: germination of two germs, multiple odontoma, crown dilaceration, severe tipping of the crown with facial angulation, retention of the permanent germ with lack of root resorption of the deciduous teeth or simple cross-b
