Resolution of dacryostenosis after osteopathic manipulative treatment.

Dacryostenosis is an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct and is the most common cause of epiphora and ocular discharge in newborns. Whereas most cases resolve spontaneously, invasive treatment may become necessary if symptoms persist past age 6 to 12 months. In the present case, a 9-month-old boy with persistent dacryostenosis was scheduled for lacrimal duct probing after first-line treatments failed. After a single session of osteopathic manipulative treatment, the patient's epiphora and other symptoms resolved, and he no longer needed surgical probing. A review of the literature highlights

The Italian Osteopathic Practitioners Estimates and RAtes (OPERA) study: How osteopaths work.

The scope of practice of the osteopathic profession in Italy is underreported. The first part of the present study investigated the Italian osteopaths' profile, focusing on the socio-demographic information and geographical distribution together with the main characteristics of their education. The OPERA-IT study highlighted that the majority of respondents declared to work as sole practitioners (58.4%), while the remaining declared to work as part of a team. Since teamwork and networking are recognized as fundamental aspects of healthcare, the present study aims to compare the osteopathic pra

The use of superficial heat in the management of low back pain by chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia: an observational cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally and a major contributor to disease burden in Australia. Superficial heat is recognised as a non-pharmacological intervention for LBP. However, its clinical use among chiropractors and osteopaths remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine how chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia use superficial heat in the management of LBP, explore their perceptions of its role and effectiveness, and assess their awareness and application of clinical practice guidelines for LBP. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was

Twenty years of university-graduated osteopaths in Belgium: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Belgium) launched Europe's first comprehensive university‑based osteopathy program, a six‑year curriculum intended to set an international standard for training osteopaths in the primary care management of functional musculoskeletal pain and disorders. This study describes the socio‑professional profile of ULB‑trained osteopaths in Belgium by graduation cohort. METHODS: All contactable ULB graduates (n = 277; 83.9%) were invited to complete a voluntary, online cross‑sectional survey (49 items) disseminated via cohort‑personalized in

Direct and mediated effects of treatment context on low back pain outcome: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Contextual components of treatment previously associated with patient outcomes include the environment, therapeutic relationship and expectancies. Questions remain about which components are most important, how they influence outcomes and comparative effects across treatment approaches. We aimed to identify significant and strong contextual predictors of patient outcomes, test for psychological mediators and compare effects across three treatment approaches. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with patient-reported and practitioner-reported questionnaire data (online or paper) collec

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with many symptoms including orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, palpitations, and cognitive dysfunction. Treatment, which typically consists of exercise, increased dietary sodium and fluids, compression garments, and medications for orthostatic intolerance, frequently produces unsatisfactory results. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with a 6-year history of severe fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, heat intolerance, cognitive dysfunction, and diffuse pain. She had previously injured her jaw on an obsta

Feasibility of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Low Back Pain in Rural Chimaltenango, Guatemala: A Pilot Study.

Background Low back pain (LBP) is a global health issue that primarily affects underserved communities with limited access to healthcare. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) offers non-pharmacological, hands-on interventions that align with its core principle of holistic care. However, little is known about the feasibility and perception of OMT in rural Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This pilot study assesses the feasibility, effectiveness, and participant perception of osteopathic principles in managing LBP complaints. Methods Adult participants experiencing LBP were recruited by the research

Chronic psoas syndrome caused by the inappropriate use of a heel lift.

Heel lifts are commonly recommended for patients to manage the pain and discomfort of leg length discrepancies. However, used inappropriately, orthotics can create additional pain instead of alleviating it. In the case described, a 79-year-old male physician used a recommended heel lift for a perceived leg length discrepancy after right hip arthroplasty. Six months postsurgery, chronic, intractable pain developed in his hip and groin. He underwent a battery of tests to locate the pain, but its source remained elusive. Osteopathic evaluation and radiographic examination revealed an absence of l

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases.

Chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs) are debilitating and potentially lethal illnesses that affect a large proportion of the global population. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a manual therapy technique developed and performed by osteopathic physicians that facilitates the body's innate healing processes. Therefore, OMT may prove a beneficial anti-inflammatory modality useful in the management and treatment of CIDs. This work aims to objectively evaluate the therapeutic benefits of OMT in patients with various CIDs. In this review, a structured literature search was performed. The …

Alzheimer disease: update on basic mechanisms.

Alzheimer disease is the most common form of dementia in the aged population. Pathologically, Alzheimer disease is characterized by progressive synaptic and neuronal loss and the presence of diagnostic amyloid plaques, consisting of fibril b-amyloid peptide aggregates and neurofibrillary tangles containing hyperphosphorylated tau protein filaments. Although plaques and tangles were originally considered the mediators of neurotoxicity in Alzheimer disease, recent research has underscored the roles of soluble β-amyloid oligomers and tau molecules. Furthermore, new evidence has re-emphasized the

The Fickle finger of quackery in otology: the saga of Curtis H. Muncie, Osteopath.

OBJECTIVE: Throughout history, false and outrageous cures for deafness have been abundant. Most of these false remedies were short lived and did not gain much attention. However, Curtis H. Muncie, a New York osteopathic physician, accrued vast wealth and fame over a half century career (1910-1960) with his proclaimed cure of deafness through reconstruction of the Eustachian tube with his index finger. Through creative marketing, clever manipulation of the press, and outrageous claims of efficacy, he profited handsomely from what was, no doubt, the most egregious and remunerative instance of de

The cranial rhythmic impulse and excessive crying of infancy.

BACKGROUND: Osteopathic physicians believe that the birthing process causes cranial dysfunction that may be manifested in somatic symptoms, one of which is excessive crying of infancy. Cranial dysfunction can be determined by assessing the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine whether an abnormal CRI is associated with excessive crying of infancy. DESIGN: Full-term infants in the well-baby nursery of an urban public hospital in the Bronx, New York were enrolled. Two (2) osteopathic physicians independently measured the CRI in infants before disc…

Osteopathic medicine for fibromyalgia: a sham-controlled randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) frequently resort to osteopathic or chiropractic treatment, despite very weak supporting evidence. We aimed to assess the efficacy of osteopathic manipulation in FM in a properly controlled and powered randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Patients were randomized to osteopathic or sham treatment. Treatment was administered by experienced physical medicine physicians, and consisted of six sessions per patient, over 6 weeks. Treatment credibility and expectancy were repeatedly evaluated. Patients completed standardized questionnaires at baseline, durin

Effect of osteopathic manipulation on gait asymmetry.

CONTEXT: Movement and loading asymmetry are associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal injury, disease progression, and suboptimal recovery. Osteopathic structural screening can be utilized to determine areas of somatic dysfunction that could contribute to movement and loading asymmetry. Osteopathic manipulation treatments (OMTs) targeting identified somatic dysfunctions can correct structural asymmetries and malalignment, restoring the ability for proper compensation of stresses throughout the body. Little is currently known about the ability for OMTs to reduce gait asymmetries, the
