In situ investigations of vault paintings in the Antwerp cathedral.

X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and Raman spectroscopy have been used to examine 15th century mediaeval and 16th century renaissance vault paintings in the Our Lady's Cathedral (Antwerp, Belgium) in view of their restoration. The use of mobile instruments made it possible to work totally non-destructively. This complementary approach yields information on the elemental (XRF) and on the molecular composition (Raman) of the pigments. For the 15th century vault painting the pigments lead-tin yellow (Pb(2)SnO(4)), lead white (2PbCO(3)xPb(OH)(2)), vermilion (HgS), massicot (PbO) and azurite (…

Characterization of paint dust aerosol generated from mechanical abrasion of TiO2-containing paints.

The purpose of the study was to determine the potential for release of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in paint dust. The coatings aerosol resuspension system was developed and used for testing the generation and physical, chemical, and morphological properties of paint dust particles from mechanical abrasion (i.e., sanding) of coated wood surfaces. The paint dust emissions from bare and coated wood surfaces with multiple coatings using variable sandpaper grits were evaluated. Substantially higher particle number concentrations were measured for paint dust containing particles in the nano range

Phylogenomics of several deer species revealed by comparative chromosome painting with Chinese muntjac paints.

A set of Chinese muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) chromosome-specific paints has been hybridized onto the metaphases of sika deer (Cervus nippon, CNI, 2n = 66), red deer (Cervus elaphus, CEL, 2n = 62) and tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus, ECE, 2n = 47). Thirty-three homologous autosomal segments were detected in genomes of sika deer and red deer, while 31 autosomal homologous segments were delineated in genome of tufted deer. The Chinese muntjac chromosome X probe painted to the whole X chromosome, and the chromosome Y probe gave signals on the Y chromosome as well as distal region of the X chrom

Lead soap protrusions in oil paintings: a perspective on nucleation pathways.

Lead soap protrusions are a well-known degradation phenomenon that appears on the surface of historic oil paintings. Despite recent progress in characterising lead soap structures and crystallisation behaviour, the physical and chemical processes that cause them to aggregate in certain locations in an oil paint and break through paint layers remain poorly understood. Based on a thorough investigation of documented lead soap protrusions in historic paintings and a review of literature on the chemistry of lead-containing oil paint layers, we propose four mechanistic scenarios for the nucleation …

Medical illustration in China: Lam Qua and his Western-style paintings.

Lam Qua, a Chinese artist who painted in the Western style, was hired by American ophthalmologist and missionary Peter Parker to paint Parker's Chinese patients. Most of Lam Qua's paintings depict patients with rather large tumors located in various areas across the body; there are a few that are also of dermatologic interest. This contribution explores Lam Qua's paintings that depict a cutaneous horn, gangrenous necrosis, and an ulcerating tumor.

Classical paintings may trigger pain and pleasure in the gendered brain.

The human body is the most common object of pictorial representation in western art and its representations trigger a vast range of experiences from pain to pleasure. The goal of this study was to investigate brain activity triggered by paintings of male and female body images exemplifying conditions associated with pleasure or pain. Our findings show participant-general as well as gender specific brain activity for either the pain or the pleasure conditions. Although our participants were fully aware that they were viewing artworks, the inferior parietal lobule - known for its role in the per…

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of oils and oil binders in paintings.

A GC/MS procedure has been developed, optimized, and applied to characterization of oil binders in paintings. The procedure involves hydrolysis of lipids to fatty acids (FAs) and derivatization of FAs to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by a solution of sodium methanolate in methanol at an elevated temperature. FAMEs are analyzed by temperature-programed GC followed by full-scan MS. Old and dried samples are subjected to extraction of nonpolymerized FAMEs into dichloromethane prior to hydrolysis. The method provides a good repeatability of results and has been applied to the characterization o…

Programmable Chromosome Painting with Oligopaints.

Current methods for chromosome painting via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) are costly, time-consuming, and limited in complexity. In contrast to conventional sources of probe, Oligopaints are computationally designed, synthesized on microarrays, and amplified by PCR. This approach allows for precise control over the sequences they target, which can range from a few kilobases to entire chromosomes with the same basic protocol. We have utilized the flexibility and scalability of Oligopaints to generate low-cost and renewable chromosome paints for Drosophila, mouse, and human chromosom

Exploring the Emergence of Organized Colouration in Paintings Through Cultural Transmission.

Painting and drawing are symbolic representations that visually transform natural scenes into line and colour. These visual expressions change through cultural transmission—the process by which artworks are reproduced and modified across individuals or communities. While structured patterns have been observed in transmitted language and music, it remains unclear whether similar structuring occurs in colour use for visual representations. This study investigates the emergence of structured colour expression in painting through cultural transmission. We conducted a transmission chain experiment

Loss and beauty: how experts and novices judge paintings with lacunae.

Lacunae are the voids left by missing or damaged pieces of artwork, and their presence constitutes a central problem in the aesthetic experience of viewing artwork. However, we hypothesize that experience and knowledge of art might differentially modify viewer reactions to degraded artwork. Here, we investigated the implicit and explicit attitudes of art experts and non-experts towards the aesthetics of perfectly intact and lacunar artwork. Sections of Flemish oil paintings were displayed with or without a degradation mask, which mimics lacunae. Three groups differing in their interaction with…

Temperature-related degradation and colour changes of historic paintings containing vivianite.

Temperature-related degradation of pure synthetic as well as partly oxidised natural vivianite has been studied by high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) covering the whole extent of the temperature-related stability of its structure. While temperatures around 70°C are already damaging to vivianite, exposition to 160°C results in complete amorphisation of both the vivianite and its oxidation products. As indicated by Mössbauer spectroscopy, temperature-induced oxidation of vivianite starts at 90°C. To study the occurring structural as well as accompanying colour changes in more detail, mo

[Mural paintings of Jean Coquet at the Desgenette Hospital in Lyon].

René Nicolas Dufriche Desgenettes (1762-1837) became famous through two historical events: the first and most famous one is where he proved his courage by inoculating himself with the plague during the Syrian campaign in 1799; the second one, rarely represented in paintings, happened during the Russian retreat in 1812 when he was freed thanks to his reputation. Two wide fresco paintings facing each other in the hall of Desgenettes, a hospital built during World War Two, are witnesses of these two major events. Jean Coquet (1907-1990), a decorator, painter and glassblower, who worked at the Bea…

DNA-PAINT MINFLUX nanoscopy.

MINimal fluorescence photon FLUXes (MINFLUX) nanoscopy, providing photon-efficient fluorophore localizations, has brought about three-dimensional resolution at nanometer scales. However, by using an intrinsic on-off switching process for single fluorophore separation, initial MINFLUX implementations have been limited to two color channels. Here we show that MINFLUX can be effectively combined with sequentially multiplexed DNA-based labeling (DNA-PAINT), expanding MINFLUX nanoscopy to multiple molecular targets. Our method is exemplified with three-color recordings of mitochondria in human cell
