Cross-Kingdom Pathogenesis of Pantoea alfalfae CQ10: Insights from Transcriptome and Proteome Analyses.

In grassland agroecosystems, some plant pathogenic bacteria can cause disease in animals. These strains are known as plant and animal cross-kingdom pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we established an alfalfa root infection model and a mouse model via the gavage administration of the Pantoea alfalfae CQ10 (CQ10) bacterial suspension. It was confirmed that the CQ10 strain caused bacterial leaf blight of alfalfa. Mice inoculated with 0.4 mL of 109 cfu/mL bacterial suspension developed clinical symptoms 48 h later, such as diminished vitality, tendencies to huddle, and lack of appetite, includin

Primed Activation of Macrophages by Oral Administration of Lipopolysaccharide Derived from Pantoea agglomerans.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is involved in the activation of the innate immune responses on monocytes/macrophages in vitro, and by intravenous injection. Although small quantities of LPS are usually found in traditional Chinese medicines, vegetables and fruits, the mode of action of orally administered LPS is still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LPS derived from Pantoea agglomerans (LPSp) was orally administered to C3H/HeN or C3H/HeJ mice ad libitum. RESULTS: The LPSp treatment enhanced phagocytosis by resident peritoneal macrophages of C3H/HeN mice but not of C3H/HeJ

Pantoea eucrina: Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection in a Woman With Short Bowel Syndrome.

Pantoea eucrina, a member of the Erwiniaceae family, is a rarely reported human pathogen primarily associated with plants. This study presents a documented case of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by P. eucrina in a 60-year-old female receiving home parenteral nutrition. Despite presenting with only minor clinical symptoms, blood cultures from both central and peripheral sites confirmed the presence of P. eucrina, identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole-genome sequencing. The infection was successfully cle

Purification and identification of an aflatoxin B1 degradation enzyme from Pantoea sp. T6.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a secondary metabolite produced by Aspergillus flavus and other fungi. Soil, crops, food, feed, etc. were susceptible to aflatoxin B1 contamination, which caused adverse economic and health consequences. It is necessary to search for microorganisms or microbial enzymes that can degrade AFB1. The degradation activity of AFB1 by cell-free supernatant (68.30%) of isolate Pantoea sp. T6 was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than viable bacterial cells (4.87%) and intracellular cell extracts (3.68%). The supernatant's AFB1 degradation activity was reduced from 68.30% to 5.33% i

Pantoea agglomerans: a mysterious bacterium of evil and good. Part IV. Beneficial effects.

Pantoea agglomerans, a gammaproteobacterium of plant origin, possesses many beneficial traits that could be used for the prevention and/or treatment of human and animal diseases, combating plant pathogens, promotion of plant growth and bioremediation of the environment. It produces a number of antibiotics (herbicolin, pantocins, microcin, agglomerins, andrimid, phenazine, among others) which could be used for combating plant, animal and human pathogens or for food preservation. Japanese researchers have demonstrated that the low-molecular-mass lipopolysaccharide of P. agglomerans isolated by t

Inheritance of Pantoea type III secretion systems through both vertical and horizontal transfer.

The type III secretion system (T3SS) is an extracellular apparatus used by many Gram-negative bacteria to deliver effector proteins directly into plant and animal cells, thereby facilitating host-specific association. Strains of the enterobacterial genus, Pantoea, have been isolated from a wide variety of hosts, including plants, insects, and humans, yet it is unclear whether the T3SS may be involved in these associations. In this study, we use comparative genomics and phylogenetic methods to examine the origin and distribution of T3SSs in 35 sequenced environmental and clinical strains of Pan

[Tibial osteitis caused by Pantoea agglomerans after open grade IIIB tibial shaft fracture].

Bone infection is not an uncommon complication of open tibial shaft fractures. We report an unusual case of chronic tibial osteitis caused by Pantoea agglomerans after an open grade IIIB tibial shaft fracture. P. agglomerans, an enterobacteria, was identified on bone samples obtained nine months after the fracture. The infection probably resulted from the initial soil contamination and developed despite fixation and bone covering with a muscle flap performed during the same operative time and adapted intravenous antibiotics.

A New Leaf Bacterial Disease of Foxtail Millet Caused by Pantoea ananatis in China.

Long-term continuous monocropping of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) in China has increased crop vulnerability to emerging diseases and threatens yield stability and grain quality. This practice may also influence inoculum carryover and host-pathogen interactions, making foxtail millet health a central issue for sustainable production. This study reports the first occurrence in China of a previously undescribed bacterial leaf disease of foxtail millet. Early symptoms are characterized by water-soaked lesions at leaf tips that spread basipetally along the veins and gradually desiccate as the t

Disseminated Lodderomyces elongisporus and Pantoea dispersa: A Rare Dual Infection in an Immunocompromised Patient.

With the advancement of modern medicine and the prolonged survival of critically ill patients, unusual organisms are increasingly emerging. Initially found in the environment, these rare organisms started presenting as human pathogens, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Here, we present a rare case of disseminated Lodderomyces elongisporus fungemia and Pantoea dispersa bacteremia in a patient with parapneumonic effusion and ruptured liver abscess. This yeast was identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF). Although this organism has no anti

An underdog under the mandible: Pantoea agglomerans abscess of the submandibular region- a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pantoea agglomerans is a gram negative, aerobic/facultative anaerobic, rod shaped bacilli commonly isolated from plants, soil, food and faeces.(1) It is a rare cause of opportunistic infections in humans acquired mainly via two major routes being, wound infection or hospital acquired. CASE REPORT: Here, we encountered a landmark, first of its kind, head and neck manifestation of a cervical soft tissue abscess with Pantoea agglomerans being the miscreant. The patient presented with complaints of a left sided neck swelling, which was radiologically suggestive of a cold abscess, howe

Effect of leaf surface waxes on leaf colonization by Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis.

To evaluate the influence of leaf cuticular waxes on bacterial colonization of leaves, bacterial colonization patterns were examined on four glossy maize (Zea mays L.) mutants that were altered in their cuticular wax biosynthesis. Mutant gl3 was indistinguishable from the wild-type maize in its ability to foster colonization by the two bacterial species, Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis. In contrast, the other three mutants supported the development of populations that significantly differed in size from those on the wild type. Mutant gl5 gl20 supported sma

Interaction with Pantoea agglomerans Modulates Growth and Melanization of Sporothrix brasiliensis and Sporothrix schenckii.

Sporothrix brasiliensis and Sporothrix schenckii stand as the most virulent agents of sporotrichosis, a worldwide-distributed subcutaneous mycosis. The origin of Sporothrix virulence seems to be associated with fungal interactions with organisms living in the same environment. To assess this hypothesis, the growth of these two species in association with Pantoea agglomerans, a bacterium with a habitat similar to Sporothrix spp., was evaluated. Growth, melanization, and gene expression of the fungus were compared in the presence or absence of the bacterium in the same culture medium. Both S. br
