[Florid tuberculosis of the paranasal sinuses].

Infections due to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis of the head and neck region mainly affect the cervical lymph nodes. We report a rare case of paranasal sinus tuberculosis. The patient presented as an emergency with right-sided headache and epiphora. Clinical, radiological and laboratory results yielded a diagnosis of acute exacerbated chronic sinusitis with meningeal affection resulting from transmigration. Histological and molecular investigations confirmed mycobacterial infection of the paranasal sinuses.

[Revision of carcinomas in paranasal sinuses].

The annual incidence rate for paranasal sinus cancer is quite low in Europe at approximately 1 case a year per 100 000 inhabitants. The most frequent site is the maxillary sinus; in some countries such as Spain, however, carcinomas of the ethmoidal sinus complex are more prevalent. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent histological type and adenocarcinoma is the one with the best prognosis. In general terms, the association of surgery and radiotherapy continues to be the optimal therapeutic option. The inclusion of an endoscopic endonasal approach for the treatment of these lesions must

Fungal infections of the paranasal sinuses.

Fungal infections can be mainly grouped into four types. The invasive forms are acute sinusitis (fulminant), chronic sinusitis (indolent), whereas the non-invasive forms are mycetoma and allergic fungal sinusitis. From December 1993 to December 1997, 27 cases of fungal sinusitis, 22 of which were noninvasive forms, and 5 of which were invasive forms, were treated and are presented in this study. When we classified the patients with fungal sinusitis, 11 were diagnosed as mycetoma, 9 as allergic fungal sinusitis, 3 as acute fulminant sinusitis and 2 as chronic indolent sinusitis, while 2 patient

Fungal colonization of the paranasal sinuses.

Fungal infection of the paranasal sinuses occur in four primary types: acute invasive (1), chronic invasive (2), chronic fungus ball (3) and allergic fungal sinusitis (4). The first and second form can be fatal and is often found in immunosuppressed patients. The present paper concerns a group of immunocompetent patients with non-invasive chronic sinusitis caused by moulds. Over the period from 1994 to 1998, 132 tissue samples from the paranasal sinuses obtained by endoscopic operation from 117 patients was examined for mycotic infections. The mycological examination was carried out if granulo…

Functional anatomy of the paranasal sinuses.

Paranasal sinus anatomy possesses great complexity and is rather variable from person to person. Significant differences in structure may also exist between the two sides of the same person. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the sinuses is critical in performing procedures such as functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

Double mucocele of the paranasal sinuses.

We have observed two contiguous mucoceles in one patient. Based on the mucoceles' signal intensities on MR imaging, as well as their anatomic location as delineated by CT and MR, we hypothesize that the "downstream" mucocele obstructed the "upstream" sinus, leading to formation of a secondary mucocele.

[Ultrasound diagnosis of the paranasal sinuses].

Ultrasound diagnosis of the nasal accessory sinuses is an easy and rapid technique without side-effects for the patients. Basic techniques are demonstrated allowing examination of the maxillary and frontal sinuses. Furthermore, functional approaches are reported which in some cases can produce better results than radiography.

Teratoid carcinosarcoma of the paranasal sinuses.

Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report. The tumours occurred in adults aged 27 to 62 yr, and the sites of origin were the ethmoid sinus (4 cases), ethmoid and other paranasal sinuses (2 cases), unspecified sinuses (1 case) and nasopharynx (1 case). The disease was rapidly fatal in 3 cases in which treatment was restricted to surgery and was associated with longer survivals in those given supportive radiotherapy. The tumours are locally aggressive and may invade s…

Multiple glass pieces in paranasal sinuses.

Here, a case has been reported of a road traffic accident with multiple glass pieces arranged in an unusual pattern in the left maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus, nasopharynx and medial side of the orbit, as seen in the radiographs. Combined surgical approach through the existing wound and endoscopic surgery was successfully used to remove nearly all the glass pieces.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of paranasal sinuses.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors IMTs are clinico-pathologically distinctive but biologically controversial entities; they rarely affect the head and neck region and usually follow a benign clinical course after radical excision. We reviewed the literatures of IMTs and present a rare case of IMT arising from the maxillary paranasal sinus of an 11-year-old girl. Moreover, we elaborate on the morpho-immunophenotypic characteristics of this lesion. Microscopic examination revealed a spindle cell proliferation set in a highly vascular stroma with numerous inflammatory cells. Tumor cells were im

Aneurysmal bone cyst of paranasal sinuses.

Aneurysmal hone cyst is rare in paranasal sinuses. It may be uni or multilocutar It occurs alone or with other benign bone lesions. The exact pathogenesis of it is still unknown. The aggressiveness of the disease needs early diagnosis and proper management to prevent recurrence. This report describes a case of aneurysmal bone cyst involving the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses which was successfully managed.

Fungal diseases of the paranasal sinuses.

Fungal diseases of the paranasal sinuses can be categorized into the invasive and noninvasive varieties. The invasive form has been classified as acute fulminant fungal sinusitis, granulomatous invasive fungal sinusitis, and chronic invasive fungal sinusitis. The noninvasive form can be classified as the fungus ball and the allergic fungal sinusitis. The following review discusses the various types of fungal sinusitis with a special emphasis on the CT and MR imaging features.

[Angiotrophic lymphoma in the paranasal sinuses].

Angiotrophic lymphoma (neoplastic angioendotheliosis) is a peculiar disease which increases large extraordinary sized cells originating from B lymphocytes, in the small blood vessels and the capillary vessels of each viscera of the whole body, including brain. This disease, which was first reported by Pfleger and Tappeiner in 1959, has many clinical manifestations. CNS, skin, lung, kidney, and adrenal gland are often damaged by the disease. A case of this disease appearing in the paranasal sinus with successful remission following chemotherapy is reported. The patient was a 78-year-old woman w

Ectopic meningioma of the paranasal sinuses.

An 11-year-old boy presented with epistaxis and proptosis. Plain X-ray revealed a bony mass in the nasal cavity. Computed tomography showed a high-density mass which at surgery turned out to be a meningioma.
