Physiotherapeutic exercises aimed at stimulating motor control, flexibility, and stability are regularly employed in human physical therapy programs. Specifically, the use of such exercises has been shown to reduce both pain and reinjury. Pursuant to the equine patient, several core strengthening exercises and their role in activating deep epaxial musculature to subsequently improve postural motor control and alter thoracolumbar kinematics have been investigated. Both baited and passive exercises offer opportunities to facilitate stretching during dynamic phases and strengthening during static

Herpes zoster (HZ) infection is a reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus that causes pain and a rash in a dermatomal distribution. Previous reports suggest that 0.5-5% of HZ infections are associated with a myotomal paresis but the incidence may actually be much higher. We present a patient with HZ infection who had persistent right upper extremity weakness after resolution of the rash. Electrodiagnostic studies demonstrated decreased amplitudes in the median and ulnar nerves as well as denervation in the right C8 myotome. Repeat studies showed interval C8 reinnervation as well as norma…

Glossolaryngeal paresis followed a difficult delivery and forceps manipulation and was due to a single extracranial traumatic lesion. Although the laryngeal palsy was suspected, hypoglossal involvement was not initially apparent. Search for additional neurologic insult is warranted when a single birth injury is identified. The glossolaryngeal paresis disappeared by age 6 months.

Seven children with muscle paralysis due to hypokalaemia are reported. In four the weakness was of asymmetrical and patchy distribution invoking an initial diagnosis of poliomyelitis, while the other three children had symmetrical pareses, a more widely recognized presentation. Involvement of bulbar muscles occurred in three, one of whom also had intercostal weakness. Head lag was present in all. The cause of hypokalaemia was malnutrition and/or diarrhoea, but in only one case was the diarrhoea severe enough to prompt the mother to seek medical advice.

We report a 57-year-old man with an ischemic lesion in the midbrain. In the acute stage, he presented with bilateral ptosis and markedly limited extraocular motion except for bilateral abduction and downward motion of the right eye. The pupillary reaction to light of his left eye also was impaired. He was admitted to our hospital, and brain MRI showed a small infarction extending from the left paramedian to the median tegmentum of the midbrain. Three weeks after admission, the ptosis and limited extraocular right eye motion had resolved. The pupillary reaction and downward motion of the left e

Neurorestoration of motor command in spastic paresis requires a double action of stimulation and guidance of central nervous system plasticity. Beyond drug therapies, electrical stimulation and cell therapies, which may stimulate plasticity without precisely guiding it, two interventions seem capable of driving plasticity with a double stimulation and guidance component: the lesion itself (lesion-induced plasticity) and durable behavior modifications (behavior-induced plasticity). Modern literature makes it clear that the intensity of the neuronal and physical training is a primary condition t…
