Parvovirus B19 infection can result in an adverse outcome when acquired during pregnancy. However, in the majority of cases a successful outcome can be anticipated. Public awareness of this condition is essential and obstetricians should be familiar with the options available to them if they are presented with this clinical problem.

B19 parvovirus is an important pathogen in man. Acute infection produces fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) in normal individuals, transient aplastic crisis in the patient with haemolysis, and pure red cell aplasia in the immunologically incompetent host. Fetal infection can lead to hydrops fetalis. The target cell of the virus is the marrow erythroid progenitor. The immune response to the virus is largely humoral and directed against limited numbers of epitopes. Persistent infection is due to failure to produce neutralizing antibodies. Because viral infection is prevalent in the population,…

The human parvovirus B 19 was discovered in 1975 by Cossart but its etiological association with erythema infectiosum and hydrops of the foetus was proved only in 1984-1985. The objective of the submitted prospective study was to assemble basic findings on the herd immunity of the female population and the risk of infection with this agent during pregnancy. Seropositivity of women of fertile age before the epidemic of parvovirus B 19 in 1993 and 1994 was cca 50%, after the epidemic 70%. Erythema infectiosum is a childhood disease (96% of the cases are children under 14 years of age), but serop…

Parvovirus B19 was discovered in 1974 by Cossart et al; is a single stranded unenveloped DNA virus, which virion is isometric, uniform and has icosagedral symmetry. B19 infection has been found in all countries, it is almost certainly world-wide in distribution. Infections occurs most frequently in late winter, spring and early summer months and are transmitted by respiratory route. Erythema infectiosum is the most common manifestation of human parvovirus B19 infection, is most commonly acquired between 4 and 10 years of age and at least 60% of adults are seropositive. Erythema Infectiosum is …

Parvovirus B19 was identified in 1975. It causes infections megalerythemia in adults associated with skin eruptions and joint pain (about 50% of the adult population is immunized). The risk of contamination in case of an epidemia is high in school teachers and school personnel. In 1984, the parvovirus B19 was implicated as the cause of fetal anasarca. The risk of transplacental contamination is estimated at 33% in case of maternal infection. Pregnant women with parvovirus B19 infection and confirmed serology should have an echography every 15 days. Fetal anasarca can be complicated by in utero…

Pathogenicity of parvovirus B19 has been demonstrated. The spectrum of clinical manifestations varies according to the age and immune status of affected patients. Parvovirus B19 is the aetiologic agent of erythema infectiosum in children. In normal adults, it is responsible for acute, bilateral and symmetrical arthritis, although chronic arthritis can develop. Parvovirus B19 has a particular tropism for erythroid precursors: in patients with underlying hemolysis, it induces transient aplastic crisis; in immunosuppressed patients the virus can lead to chronic pure red cell aplasia. Hydrops feta…

Parvovirus B19, the only known human pathogenic parvovirus, is highly tropic to human bone marrow and replicates only in erythroid progenitor cells. The basis of this erythroid tropism is the tissue distribution of the B19 cellular receptor, globoside (blood group P antigen). In individuals with underlying hemolytic disorders, infection with parvovirus B19 is the primary cause of transient aplastic crisis (TAC). In immunocompromised patients, persistent B19 infection may develop that manifests as pure red cell aplasia and chronic anemia. B19 infection in utero can result in fetal death, hydrop…

Human parvovirus is an often unrecognized but potentially deadly infection when contracted by childbearing women who are seronegative. Although maternal symptoms and sequelae are mild, the exposed fetus quickly can develop nonimmune hydrops fetalis and die. Health care providers can prepare for appropriate maternal and fetal management by reviewing the history, disease process, and transmission mode of parvovirus.

Target cells for the human parvovirus B19 include erythroid progenitors located in the bone marrow in adults and in the liver in fetuses of 12 to 30 weeks gestational age. The main manifestations of fetal parvovirus B19 infection seem to be related to lysis of the erythroid progenitors which causes non immune hydrops fetalis with severe anemia, congestive heart failure, generalized edema and death. The exact incidence of human parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy remains unclear.

Parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy can cause hydrops fetalis resulting in fetal loss. Acute B19 infection was serologically confirmed in 80 pregnant women by ELISA. Of 80 pregnancies, 4 were terminated. Of the remaining 76 pregnancies, no fetal complications were observed in 36 (47.4%), hydrops fetalis occurred in 18 (23.7%) and no further information was available in 22 (28.9%). 15 of 18 (83.3%) fetuses with hydrops died. Intrauterine transfusion was performed in the remaining three fetuses and pregnancy continued without further complications. B19 infected fetal erythroblasts can be detec…

BACKGROUND: Parvoviruses, characterized by their tropism for blood cells, can manifest as asymptomatic infections. With their ability to persist in blood, assessing the prevalence of Parvovirus B19 (B19V) and Parvovirus 4 (PARV4) among healthy blood donors is essential for evaluating the potential transmission risks through blood transfusions, emphasizing the need for comprehensive screening protocols.
METHODS: Four hundred blood donors participated in the study, with their blood specimens subjected to Real-Time PCR analysis for B19V and PARV4 nucleic acids after obtaining informed consent. A…

Parvovirus B19 is a human specific genus within the Parvoviridae family. The Parvoviridae family includes several other genera that infect canines, chickens, bovines, felines, and many other animals. Parvovirus B19 cannot be passed onto canines or any other animals, and other parvovirus genera, such as canine parvovirus, cannot be spread to humans. This article discusses the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and effective mitigation strategies, including effective hand hygiene, common touch surface sanitizing, and respiratory hygiene.

Treatment of parvovirus infections among immunocompromised hosts using immunoglobulin has provided the clinician with a useful therapeutic tool but has also highlighted the problems concerning chronic disease states. The discovery of the human parvovirus B19 in 1975 and subsequent studies of its effects in humans have identified this virus as the causative agent of a broad spectrum of diseases. Recent improvements regarding the development of sensitive PCR techniques and methods for cultivation have provided new insight into its pathogenic role, its virology and immunology, and the varied clin…

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human pathogen belonging to the Parvoviridae family. It is widely diffused in the population and responsible for a wide range of diseases, diverse in pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical course, and severity. B19V infects and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs) in the bone marrow leading to their apoptosis. Moreover, it can also infect, in an abortive manner, a wide set of different cell types, normally non-permissive, and modify their normal physiology. Differences in the characteristics of virus-cell interaction may translate into different pathogenetic me…

Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum and sometimes the infection is correlated with severe haematological complications, or in pregnancy to fetalis hydrops. Moreover some authors suggest an infection involvement in some autoimmune diseases. To this purpose we evaluated seroprevalence for PVB19 in following the autoimmune or dysreactive pathologies: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cryoglobulinemia, idiopathic systemic--ANCA associated vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the case of LES, 31/42 patients were positive for PVB19 versus 21/42 of blood donor…
