BACKGROUND: Materno-fetal infection due to Pasteurella multocida is rare; it may be severe in the neonate.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year old woman was admitted at 37 weeks' gestation with a history of abdominal cramps. Twenty-four hours after delivery, the mother was febrile (40 degrees C) and was given intravenous cefotaxime (2 days), followed by cefpodoxime (15 days). The newborn was febrile and hypotonic 24 hours after birth; he received an infusion of hydroxyethylamidon and was given cefotaxime (3 days), netilmicin (6 days) and amoxicillin (10 days). Pasteurella multocida was isolated from place…

The patient was a 26-year-old man who complained of headache and vomiting. On examination, there was nothing abnormal, but the edge of the right optic papilla was not clear. His temperature was 38.5 degrees C, pulse 96/min, blood pressure 120/80 mmHg. A space-occupying lesion in his fronto-dextra cupular part was found by CT scanning. He had a 12-year history of chronic purulent otitis. The diagnosis was a brain abscess in the fronto-dextra cupular part. The brain abscess was extracted and Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the dark brown pus draining from the abscess. The patient recover…

We have reported two cases of septic arthritis caused by Pasteurella multocida, the first, septic polyarthritis unrelated to animal contact and the other, septic monarthritis after a cat scratch. Serious infections with this gram-negative bacillus must be treated with intravenous penicillin, ampicillin, or a third-generation cephalosporin; aminoglycosides are not effective. A high index of suspicion is appropriate when there is a history of a recent animal-inflicted wound, though infection may also occur with either nontraumatic animal contact or no recognized animal contact at all.

Ornithine-, lysine- and arginine-decarboxylase activity of 218 P. multocida strains, isolated from birds of varying disease symptoms in Bulgaria and CSSR, and from pigs, rabbits and birds in Cuba, USSR and CSSR, was studied after the method of Moller. Positive ornithine decarboxylase activity was established in 211 strains, low -- in 2, and negative -- in 5 strains. Low arginine decarboxylase activity was observed in 12 Pasteurella strains, while in 14 -- low lysine decarboxylase activity. The presence of ornithine decarboxylase activity can be used, along with the cultural and biochemical pro

Pasteurella multocida is highly prevalent in animal populations. It is usually a component of the normal microbiome of the oral, nasopharyngeal and upper respiratory tracts of animals and can cause varying degrees of infection and even death in animals. P. multocida poses a threat to public health safety because humans can be infected by being bitten by infected animals or coming into contact with their nasal secretions. This article summarises the morphological and culture characteristics of P. multocida, in addition to serotyping, virulence factors and pathogenesis, aiming to explore the mec…

Pasteurella multocida is a rare cause of infection in the pediatric age group that can lead to severe systemic disease and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This bacterium is found in the normal nasopharyngeal flora of domestic animals. Transmission can occur through direct traumatic contact or indirectly via animal saliva. We present the case of a 30-day-old male infant who attended a neonatology follow-up visit with no parental concerns. On physical examination, the infant showed intermittent periods of whining, ill appearance, reduced vitality, and poor peripheral perf…

We present the case of a 61-year-old Caucasian gentleman who presented with a one-day history of fever, chills, and altered mental status. His symptoms were initially thought to be secondary to cellulitis. Blood cultures grew Pasteurella multocida, a rare pathogen to cause bacteremia. Our patient was treated with ciprofloxacin for two weeks and made a complete and uneventful recovery. Our patient's uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease put him at a higher risk for developing serious P. multocida infection. The patient's dog licking the wounds on his legs was considered as t…

Pasteurella multocida isolated from turkeys during an outbreak of fowl cholera was characterized by serotype and heterogeneity of genes encoding rRNA (ribotype) to investigate the epidemiology of the organism. Isolates were collected between October 1985 and July 1986. The M9 or Clemson University fowl cholera vaccine-like strain was detected in 17% of the flocks with fowl cholera. One particular strain, isolated only from breeder flocks, was recovered from 7 of the 10 breeder flocks examined in this study. Intracompany transmission appeared to be common, implying a failure in biosecurity. Cir…

Pasteurella multocide (P. multocida), a small gram-negative bacillus, has been known to be the causative agent of hemorrhagic septicemia in animals. P. multocida infection in human was reported as skin abscess and/or septicemia after an animal bit or scratch. Pulmonary infections of P. multocida have been developed in the patients with chronic pulmonary diseases such as bronchiectasis. In Japan, however, P. multocida respiratory tract infections are rare. In this report, a 80-year-old female with bronchiectasis was admitted on August, 1985. She had a productive cough, hemosputum, and a low gra

A case of Pasteurella multocida bacteremia in a previously healthy hospital employee is presented. The patient had sustained a scratch from his dog four days prior to being seen in the emergency department with adequate healing and no evidence of localized infection. He presented with an acute febrile illness, and was discharged from the emergency department with a diagnosis of viral syndrome. He was asked to return to the hospital the next day when a bacteriology report of gram negative rods in both aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles was received in the emergency department. Pasteure…

We describe an uncommon case of a six-week-old male infant with Pasteurella multocida bacteremia. He presented to a tertiary care pediatric hospital emergency department (ED) in the American southeast (Arkansas, USA) with a new onset of fever and decreased oral (PO) intake. On exam, he was irritable, febrile, and tachycardic with no significant findings. Infectious workup was initially remarkable for an elevated procalcitonin of 7.25 ng/mL (reference range: 0.00-0.10 ng/mL) and a low white blood cell count of 3.2 K/cmm (reference range: 5.0-19.5 K/cmm). He was admitted and treated empirically …

Many Pasteurella multocida strains are carried as commensals, while some cause disease in animals and humans. Some type D strains cause atrophic rhinitis in pigs, where the causative agent is known to be the Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT). PMT activates three families of G-proteins-Gq/11, G12/13, and Gi/o-leading to cellular mitogenesis and other sequelae. The effects of PMT on whole animals in vivo have been investigated previously, but only at the level of organ-specific pathogenesis. We report here the first study to screen all the organs targeted by the toxin by using the QE antibody th…

Pasteurella multocida is a heterogeneous species that is a primary pathogen of many different vertebrates. This Gram-negative bacterium can cause a range of diseases, including fowl cholera in birds, haemorrhagic septicaemia in ungulates, atrophic rhinitis in swine, and lower respiratory tract infections in cattle and pigs. One of the primary virulence factors of P. multocida is lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Recent work has shown that this crucial surface molecule shows significant structural variability across different P. multocida strains, with many producing LPS structures that are highly simi…

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative bacillus, is rarely associated with acute respiratory infections.
AIM: To describe a case of fatal P. multocida epiglottitis.
RESULTS: A 52-year-old gentleman developed a sore throat and died suddenly within an hour of seeing his general practitioner. Post-mortem findings were consistent with death due to laryngeal obstruction associated with epiglottitis and laryngopharyngitis. A swab taken from the epiglottis for culture was positive for P. multocida.
CONCLUSION: Physicians should be aware of the potential for acute deterioration in adu…

Blepharoconjunctivitis and hypopyon were observed in eyes of turkeys infected during 2 epornitics of fowl cholera. Blepharoconjunctivitis, hypopyon, anterior synechiae, and panophthalmitis were observed sporadically in turkeys experimentally exposed to Pasteurella multocida via drinking water. P. multocida was isolated from these lesions.
