BACKGROUND: Unplanned readmission is one of many measures of the quality of care of pediatric patients with neurological conditions. In this multicenter study, we searched for novel risk factors of readmission of patients with neurological conditions.
METHODS: We retrieved hospitalization data of patients less than 18 years with one or more neurological conditions. This resulted in a total of 105,834 encounters from 18 hospitals. We included data on patient demographics, prior healthcare resource utilization, neurological conditions, number of other conditions/diagnoses, number of medications

Cellulitis is an infection of the soft tissues of the skin. Some patients are hospitalized multiple times; lymphedema, chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral circulatory disturbance, and deep vein thrombosis are said to be risk factors for multiple admissions. Conversely, in Japan, elderly women and undernourished elderly have been reported to be at risk of multiple hospitalizations, suggesting a different patient background from that reported overseas. We investigated the characteristics of readmission cases for patients hospitalized for cellulitis in Japan. We retrospectively examined case

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative effects of patient and hospital factors on a hospital's postpartum readmission rate.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using State Inpatient Databases from California, Florida, and New York between 2004 and 2013. We compared patient and hospital characteristics among hospitals with low and high readmission rates using χ2 tests. Risk-adjusted 30-day readmission rates were calculated for patient, delivery, and hospital characteristics to understand factors affecting readmission using fixed and random effects models.
RESULTS: Patien

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) are interventions used to relieve biliary obstruction. The utility of ERCP compared with PTBD is not fully understood from a utilization outcome standpoint. Our study compares readmission rates and hospitalization outcomes in ERCP and PTBD.
METHODS: Using the National Readmission Database (NRD) 2016 to 2020, we identified all patients with an ERCP or PTBD completed during admission. The study cohort was first analyzed by 3 weighted study arms including those admitted with ch

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is one of the most common diagnoses in the elderly United States Medicare (⩾ age 65) population. This patient population has a particularly high readmission rate, with one estimate of the 6-month readmission rate topping 40%. The rapid rise of mobile health (mHealth) presents a promising new pathway for reducing hospital readmissions of CHF, and, more generally, the management of chronic conditions. Using a randomized research design and a multivariate regression model, we evaluated the effectiveness of a hybrid mHealth model-the integration of remote patient mon

Despite advancements in surgical technique and component design, implant loosening, stiffness, and instability remain leading causes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) failure. Patient-specific instruments (PSI) aid in surgical precision and in implant positioning and ultimately reduce readmissions and revisions in TKA. The objective of the study was to evaluate total hospital cost and readmission rate at 30, 60, 90, and 365 days in PSI-guided TKA patients. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent a primary TKA for osteoarthritis from the Premier Perspective Database between 2014 and 2

OBJECTIVE: To study the factors associated with hospital readmission.
METHODS: Data used in this study came from a population-based survey of older adults without cognitive impairment. Cox regression was used to assess the factors associated with readmission within a 2-year follow-up period. According to Andersen's model of healthcare seeking behavior, study variables considered included predisposing, enabling and need factors at the individual and health system levels.
RESULTS: Of the 433 participants with an index hospitalization, 97% were discharged with a physical and 3% with a psychiatr

INTRODUCTION: Hospital readmissions are common in patients with cirrhosis, but there are few studies describing readmission preventability. We aimed to describe the incidence, causes, and risk factors for preventable readmission in this population.
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study of patients with cirrhosis hospitalized at a single center between June 2014 and March 2020 and followed up for 30 days postdischarge. Demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic data, functional status, and quality of life were collected. Readmission preventability was independently and systematically

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) can present with various clinical symptoms, including chest pain, syncope, and sudden cardiac death, particularly in those without atherosclerotic risk factors. In this contemporary analysis, we aimed to identify the causes and predictors of 30-day hospital readmission in SCAD patients. We utilized the latest Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2016 - 2017 to identify patients with a primary discharge diagnosis of SCAD. The primary outcome was 30-day readmission. Among 795 patients admitted with a principal discharge diagnosis of SCAD, 85 (11.3%)

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients who undergo surgery in hospitals experiencing significant length of stay (LOS) reductions over time are exposed to a higher risk of severe adverse events in the postoperative period.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical care innovation has encouraged hospitals to shorten LOS under financial pressures with uncertain impact on patient outcomes.
METHODS: We selected all patients who underwent elective colectomy or urgent hip fracture repair in French hospitals between 2013 and 2016. For each procedure, hospitals were categorized i

OBJECTIVES: Sepsis survivors are susceptible to health complications, substantially increasing the risk of emergency department (ED) and hospital readmissions. Few evaluations, however, have assessed the effectiveness of interventions targeted at decreasing readmissions among patients with sepsis. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a targeted intervention to decrease 72-hour ED readmission rates in patients with sepsis or pyelonephritis in a large ED in the US South.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study investigated 72-hour readmission rates from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 202
