Morphological analysis when morphemes are hard to detect: Evidence from infixation and reduplication.

There is substantial psycholinguistic evidence that skilled reading involves morphological analysis, whereby morphologically complex words like teacher are recognised via constituent morphemes {teach}+{-er}. The ability to recognise morphemes is vital as it allows readers to interpret both familiar and unfamiliar words. However, over 50% of the evidence for this claim comes from studies of suffixation in English, where morphemes typically have a relatively consistent surface form across exemplars (clean in cleaner, cleanliness; -ed in walked, jumped). It remains unclear whether morphological a

Not completed but still identified: orthographic closure and word recognition among poor and typical native Arab readers.

The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the orthographic representations among poor readers compared to typical readers. For this aim, an orthographic visual closure task was used. One hundred and twenty native Arab readers, 60 typical and 60 poor, from third, fifth and seventh grades, were participated in the current study. A computerized tool was designed to test the orthographic closure ability, where the stimuli were orthographic patterns of words in Arabic. For each orthographic pattern of each word, eight levels of appearance display were created: Level 1 showed the m

Top-down modulation and cortical-AMG/HPC interaction in familiar face processing.

Humans can accurately recognize familiar faces in only a few hundred milliseconds, but the underlying neural mechanism remains unclear. Here, we recorded intracranial electrophysiological signals from ventral temporal cortex (VTC), superior/middle temporal cortex (STC/MTC), medial parietal cortex (MPC), and amygdala/hippocampus (AMG/HPC) in 20 epilepsy patients while they viewed faces of famous people and strangers as well as common objects. In posterior VTC and MPC, familiarity-sensitive responses emerged significantly later than initial face-selective responses, suggesting that familiarity e

Rapid forgetting of faces in congenital prosopagnosia.

Congenital prosopagnosia (CP) is a life-long impairment in face recognition that occurs in the absence of any known brain damage. It is still unclear whether this disorder is related to a visual deficit, or to an impairment in encoding, maintaining or retrieving a face from memory. We tested CPs and matched neurotypical controls using a delayed estimation task in which a target face was shown either upright or inverted. Participants were asked to select the target face out of a cyclic space of morphed faces that could either resemble the target face, or not. The inclusion of upright and invert

Relational properties as a source of variation for object representation in OTC.

The category selectivity model has shaped our understanding of the organization of object-related information in the occipitotemporal visual cortex (OTC). Ritchie et al. propose that OTC represents objects depending on the properties that are behaviorally relevant in a specific task/context, rather than by encoding the invariant visual properties to determine category membership. We consider this proposal in the context of recent developments that have extended the function of vision (and OTC) beyond object recognition, to include a representation of how objects relate to each other, a key pie

Characterizing developmental prosopagnosia beyond face perception: Impaired recollection but intact familiarity recognition.

Converging lines of research suggests that many developmental prosopagnosics (DPs) have impairments beyond face perception, but currently no framework exists to characterize these impaired mechanisms. One potential extra-perceptual deficit is that DPs encode/retrieve faces in a distinct manner from controls that does not sufficiently support individuation. To test this possibility, 30 DPs and 30 matched controls performed an old/new face recognition task while providing confidence ratings, to which a model-based ROC analysis was applied. DPs had significantly reduced recollection compared to c

Foveal crowding for large and small Landolt Cs: Similarity and Attention.

We compare the recognition of foveal crowded Landolt Cs of two sizes: brief (40 ms), large, low-contrast Cs and high-contrast (1 sec) tests at the resolution limit of the visual system. In different series, the test Landolt C was surrounded by two identical distractors located symmetrically along the horizontal or by a single distractor. The distractors were Landolt Cs or rings. At the resolution limit, the critical spacing was similar in the two series and did not depend on the type of distractor. The result supports the hypothesis that crowding at the resolution limit occurs when both the te

Autism and the experience of a perceptual object.

Sewards and Sewards (2002) argue that while computations necessary for object recognition occur throughout the ventral visual stream, object recognition awareness involves the anterior temporal lobe and the medial orbital prefrontal cortex. The present paper suggests, however, that the medial orbital prefrontal cortex has a unique contribution, namely that of producing a basic experience of a perceptual object. It is further argued that the mechanisms that produce this experience also result in making the object more important than its subparts and features. Finally, it is argued that a reduct

The visual and semantic features that predict object memory: Concept property norms for 1,000 object images.

Humans have a remarkable fidelity for visual long-term memory, and yet the composition of these memories is a longstanding debate in cognitive psychology. While much of the work on long-term memory has focused on processes associated with successful encoding and retrieval, more recent work on visual object recognition has developed a focus on the memorability of specific visual stimuli. Such work is engendering a view of object representation as a hierarchical movement from low-level visual representations to higher level categorical organization of conceptual representations. However, studies

Transient attention equally reduces visual crowding in radial and tangential axes.

Crowding refers to the failure to identify a peripheral object due to its proximity to other objects (flankers). This phenomenon can lead to reading and object recognition impairments and is associated with macular degeneration, amblyopia, and dyslexia. Crucially, the maximal target-flanker spacing required for the crowding interference (critical spacing) increases with eccentricity. This spacing is also larger when target and flankers appear along the horizontal meridian (radial arrangement) than when the flankers appear above and below the target (tangential arrangement). This phenomenon is

The causal future: The influence of shape features caused by external transformation on visual attention.

Previous studies have validated that participants can distinguish different origins of objects' shape features, teasing apart features caused by transformation (causal history) from those of the original shape. Considering bite as a transformation example, two experiments were designed to investigate the effect of causal history on the allocation of visual attention. Participants were presented with regular and familiar complete or bitten shapes in Experiment 1 and unfamiliar and irregular complete or bitten shapes in Experiment 2 over a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). The task wa

Simultanagnosia: when all you can see are trees, the forest still rules.

We investigated the nature of covertly processed visual elements in a patient with simultanagnosia, a disorder characterized by the inability to perceive multiple aspects of a visual scene all at once. Using the first letter of the color words red, green, or blue, we created a novel testing paradigm that combined Navon global-local stimuli with a single-letter Stroop task. The letters R, G, or B were arranged in the overall configuration of a large R, G, or B. The patient never could report seeing the larger letter, and always could name the smaller letters. But, when asked to name ink color o

Visual discrimination of target displacement remains after damage to the striate cortex in humans.

Damage to the striate cortex usually causes blindness in those regions of the visual field which map to the area of neural damage. Nonetheless, there are reports that some patients with such damage can localize and perform certain visual discriminations between light stimuli presented within the 'blind' area of the visual field. Experiments on animals with different brain areas ablated suggest that visual function is served by two principal projection pathways from the retina. That to the striate cortex is primarily responsible for fine discrimination between stimulus parameters such as colour

Perceptual asymmetry during free viewing of words and faces: The effect of context on recognition.

There is ample evidence supporting the dissociation between the role of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in processing words and faces, respectively. Nevertheless, research has not yet studied the effect of perceptual asymmetry in memory context effect tasks using words and faces. Thus, the present study researches the advantages of presenting information in the right versus left hemispace and the effect of context on recognition when using faces compared to words presented in the right versus left hemispace. Participants (n=60) were assigned either to the group presented with pairs of
