PURPOSE: To assess complications of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in uremic patients with and without clinical symptoms by CT peritoneography.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 64 patients with end-stage renal disease and on continuous CAPD were investigated. Twenty-eight had some clinical symptoms, which might be related to the complications of CAPD. Thirty-six patients had no complaints or symptoms due to the dialysis treatment.
RESULTS: CT peritoneography revealed various complications including hernias (50%), dialysate leakage (46%), localized fluid collection (4%) and …

The technique of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was evaluated in nine patients during 136 patient weeks. The major objectives were to see if continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis would provide [1] acceptable control of serum chemistries by usual criteria, [2] adequate removal of sodium and water, [3] tolerable protein losses, and [4] a low prevalence of peritonitis with episodes responsive to therapy with continuing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Preliminary findings suggest continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis represents an effective ambulatory, portable, inter…

Given the central importance of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) nurse in successfully training and supporting a patient with PD at home, as well as preventing complications as a result of the therapy, the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) has provided guidance on the principles for training in two previous publications. Despite the lack of high certainty evidence in teaching PD, this ISPD 2025 Position Paper builds upon the two prior works to provide contemporary approaches to training a patient/care partner for PD to be performed at home, based upon an evolution in healthcare …

We report a case of a 2-year-old-boy with end stage renal disease (ESRD) secondary to posterior urethral valves (PUV) on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Our patient developed multiple episodes of peritonitis, refractory anemia and feeding intolerance over a 12-month-period. He was treated with multiple courses of intraperitoneal antibiotics. Despite being on high-calorie formula, he was slowly thriving. The feeding intolerance was attributed to past history of prematurity, gastro-esophageal reflux disease and ESRD co-morbidities. He had anemia resistant to erythrocyte stimulating agents and iron sup…

Peritonitis, a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), can be caused by opportunistic pathogens like Micrococcus species on rare occasions. We present a case of Micrococcus sp peritonitis in a 55-year-old female with end-stage kidney disease on continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis for one year who presented with cloudy effluent. Initial treatment against Micrococcus sp with vancomycin, gentamicin, and prophylactic oral nystatin was successful. However, one month later, the patient presented with abdominal pain and dialysate culture again grew Micrococcus sp. Treatment with vancomyc…

The incidence of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has decreased as a result of improvements in PD technology. Nevertheless, peritonitis remains a major problem in PD, with a substantial percent of patients developing persistent or relapsing infections. Current treatment guidelines emphasize the use of intraperitoneal antibiotics and once-a-day administration of aminoglycosides and provide indications for removal of the peritoneal catheter. Further clinical studies testing these guidelines are needed. In addition, guidelines for patients on PD treatment modalities other than sta…

Peritonitis is an unusual complication of infections caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and has rarely been reported in patients with end-stage renal disease who are maintained on peritoneal dialysis. We report two patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis in whom the first known manifestation of cryptococcal infection was dialysate cultures positive for Cryptococcus neoformans. One patient was on prednisone for systemic lupus erythematosis. The other patient was severely malnourished with type I diabetes mellitus. Both patients were found to have cryptococcal meningitis. Both patients were treat…

One of the main goals of dialysis is the control of extracellular volume, because inadequate sodium and fluid removal result in fluid overload and increased mortality. In the present study, we evaluated the roles of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD), and the use of icodextrin on sodium removal in 29 patients (n = 18 on CAPD, n = 11 on CCPD). Daily removal of sodium by each modality and dialysis adequacy by Kt/V and creatinine clearance were evaluated. A significantly higher amount of sodium was removed in CAPD patients than in CCPD …

BACKGROUND: Irisin is a recently discovered myokine thought to be involved in multiple metabolism abnormalities in most dialysis patients. However, the myokine has not been thoroughly studied in peritoneal dialysis. This study aimed to evaluate serum irisin levels and establish their relation to dialysis adequacy, insulin resistance, and bone metabolism status in patients on peritoneal dialysis.
METHODS: A total of 59 nondiabetic prevalent peritoneal dialysis patients and 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum irisin concentration was asses…

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a home-based kidney replacement therapy (KRT) performed in people with kidney failure. PD can be performed by manual filling and draining of the abdominal cavity, i.e. continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD), or using a device connected to the PD catheter that is programmed to perform PD exchanges, i.e. automated PD (APD). APD is considered to have several advantages over CAPD, such as a lower incidence of peritonitis, fewer mechanical complications, and greater psychosocial acceptability. Acknowledging the increasing uptake of APD in incident and prevalent pati…

UNLABELLED: ♦
BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has limited power for liquid extraction (ultrafiltration), so fluid overload remains a major cause of treatment failure. ♦
METHODS: We present steady concentration peritonal dialysis (SCPD), which increases ultrafiltration of PD exchanges by maintaining a constant peritoneal glucose concentration. This is achieved by infusing 50% glucose solution at a constant rate (typically 40 mL/h) during the 4-hour dwell of a 2-L 1.36% glucose exchange. We treated 21 fluid overload episodes on 6 PD patients with high or average-high peritoneal transport …

The purpose of our study was to compare the incidence of peritonitis between continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treatment (Group I) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) treatment (Group II) taking into account the same population. We compared 20 patients with a follow-up of 215 patient-months on CAPD and 252 patient-months on APD. Demographic data, diagnosis, peritoneal equilibration test (PET) results, adequacy, and peritonitis rate were analyzed. Diagnoses included glomerulopathy 35%, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) 20%, Type II diabetes 10%, systemic lu…

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD) are two possible modalities for people with kidney failure commencing dialysis. Only a few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated PD versus HD. The benefits and harms of the two modalities remain uncertain. This review includes both RCTs and non-randomised studies of interventions (NRSIs).
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of PD, compared to HD, in people with kidney failure initiating dialysis.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Register of Studies from 2000 to June 2024 using se…
