Building on the 2025 National Academies Pharmacy Workshop: pharmacy deserts in the United States.

Areas with no access or limited access to community pharmacies are routinely referred to as "pharmacy deserts," which are of growing concern in the United States. In addition to medication dispensing, community pharmacies offer a variety of healthcare services that keep populations and individuals healthy. Our objective is to present an overview of pharmacy deserts in the United States, discuss the impact of reduced pharmacy access for Americans, and propose solutions discussed at the 2025 Innovations in Pharmacy Training and Sustainable Practice to Advance Patient Care: A Workshop at the Nati…

Recommendations for Aligning PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Training and Pharmacy Specialist Board Certification.

With the increased focus and anticipated growth in specialty training and certification within the profession of pharmacy, it is important for the profession to step back and evaluate the manner in which its adopted education and certification systems interface. Providing medical abortion services through pharmacies: Evidence from Nepal.

Despite the legalization of abortion in 2002 has made extensive efforts to expand services throughout the country, access to safe abortion care remains a constraint in Nepal, particularly in remote areas where trained providers and equipment are scarce. Expanding access to medical abortion (MA) through pharmacy workers could be a promising avenue to reach such women with safe and convenient care, but neither Nepali law nor the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends pharmacy provision of MA citing the reason of insufficient evidence. This paper examines the pharmacy provision of MA in expan

Chlamydia screening interventions from community pharmacies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) is the most commonly notified sexually transmissible infection in Australia. Increasing the number of people aged 16-25 years being tested for chlamydia has become a key objective. The strategy recommends that chlamydia screening sites should be easy to access. Community pharmacies are conveniently located and easily accessible. This review aimed to determine the different types of pharmacy-based chlamydia screening interventions, describe their uptake rates, and understand issues around the acceptability of and barriers to testing. METHODS: Seven…

Diabetes risk assessments and HbA1c-measurements in community pharmacies.

OBJECTIVES: Due to a lack of clear symptoms, type 2 diabetes (T2D) can remain undetected for many years. The aim of the study was to explore if Norwegian community pharmacies could identify individuals with a high risk of developing T2D by offering a diabetes risk assessment service. This study also investigated if the service recruited individuals that the national guideline recommends for diabetes risk assessment, and the proportion of participants who had visited their GP at least once a year. METHODS: During the inclusion period (September 2016 to the middle of April 2017), pharmacy custo…

Selecting pharmacies for COVID-19 testing to ensure access.

Rapid diagnostic testing for COVID-19 is key to guiding social distancing orders and containing emerging disease clusters by contact tracing and isolation. However, communities throughout the US do not yet have adequate access to tests. Pharmacies are already engaged in testing, but there is capacity to greatly increase coverage. Using a facility location optimization model and willingness-to-travel estimates from US National Household Travel Survey data, we find that if COVID-19 testing became available in all US pharmacies, an estimated 94% of the US population would be willing to travel to …
