Serious fungal infections in the Philippines.

The Philippines is a low middle-income, tropical country in Southeast Asia. Infectious diseases remain the main causes of morbidity, including tuberculosis. AIDS/HIV prevalence is still low at <1%, but is rapidly increasing. Fungal disease surveillance has not been done, and its burden has never been estimated. This becomes more important as the population of immunocompromised patients increases, drawn from patients with AIDS, TB, malignancies, and autoimmune diseases requiring chronic steroid use. Using the methodology of the LIFE program ( www.LIFE-worldwide.org ), estimates were derived fro…

Birth defects ascertainment in the Philippines.

In the Philippines, congenital anomalies rank among the top 20 causes of death across the life span and are already the third leading cause of death in the infancy period (Philippine Department of Health, 1996). Despite the magnitude of the problem, no formal systematic registration of birth defects has been done in the country up until 1999. Various attempts have been made by different study groups to gather data but there was never a formal effort to consolidate the information and establish a centralized registry. Data from various modes of ascertainment are hereby presented: 1) Philippine …

Community-based rehabilitation in the Philippines.

Rehabilitation in the Philippines has in the past been based on the Western model, with an emphasis on hospital departments located in the major cities. This approach is inappropriate for the majority of disabled people in the Republic as 70% of the population live in rural areas. A community-based programme was devised using local volunteers who had simple training. These volunteers can identify and support disabled people in their own villages, avoiding long journeys and expensive institutional care.

Natural family planning in the Philippines.

The calendar rhythm method of natural family planning (NFP) is one of the most popular contraceptive methods in the Philippines. As a result, the Philippines has one of the highest NFP prevalence rates in the developing world. In recent years, family planning program officials have become increasingly interested in improving the practice of NFP, both by improving the quality of rhythm practice and by introducing newer, more accurate NFP methods. Over the years a substantial body of research data related to NFP practice in the Philippines has accumulated. This paper presents major findings from…

Liver diseases: Perspective from the Philippines.

Liver diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. In the Philippines, a lower middle-income country in Southeast Asia, liver diseases accounted for 27.3 cases per 1000 deaths. In this review, we discussed the prevalence, risk factors, and management of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and other viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The true burden of liver disease in the Philippines is likely underestimated due to limited epidemiological studies. Thus, surveillance of liver disease should…

The Philippines' new postabortion care policy.

In 2000, a Philippine policy clarifying the legality of medical treatment for women with postabortion complications was introduced to address unsafe abortion as a leading cause of maternal death, and reports of discrimination and abuse by healthcare providers against women who had abortions illegally. Despite its initial success as a pilot program, the policy's implementation and expansion were not prioritized. The incidence of unsafe abortion has increased over the years and, in 2009, the right to postabortion care was codified in national law, yet the mistreatment and abuse of women has cont

Comparison of the detection rates for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) of the 2013 Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) Revised Philippine Guidelines and the 2005 PAO-Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) Guidelines for ROP screening in the Philippine General Hospital: a 5-year review.

OBJECTIVES: Compare the detection rates of the 2013 Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) guidelines for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening and the 2005 PAO-Philippine Pediatric Society guidelines in identifying infants who develop ROP in the 5-year study period in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Secondary objectives include determination of ROP prevalence; correlation of gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW) and other risk factors to ROP; and identification of the most common intervention. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Retrospective cross-sectional study of ROP records between 1
