Spin-phonon coupling in a double-stranded model of DNA.

We address the electron-spin-phonon coupling in an effective model Hamiltonian for DNA to assess its role in spin transfer involved in the C … states carry spin currents that are protected by spin-inactive stretching optical modes. As optical phonons interact more strongly than acoustic phonons, side buckling and tilting optical base modes will be more strongly associated with decoherence, which allows for the two terminal spin filtering effects found in CISS.

Optomechanical Quantum Entanglement Mediated by Acoustic Phonon Fields.

We present exact solutions for the quantum time evolution of two spatially separated, local inductor-capacitor (LC) oscillators that are coupled optomechanically to a long elastic strip that functions as a quantum thermal acoustic field environment. We show that the optomechanical coupling to the acoustic environment gives rise to causal entanglement dynamics between the two LC oscillators in the absence of resonant photon exchange between them, and that significant entanglement develops regardless of the environment temperature. Such a process establishes that distributed entanglement may be

Phonon thermal Hall effect in a metallic spin ice.

It has become common knowledge that phonons can generate thermal Hall effect in a wide variety of materials, although the underlying mechanism is still controversial. We study longitudinal κxx and transverse κxy thermal conductivity in Pr2Ir2O7, which is a metallic analog of spin ice. Despite the presence of mobile charge carriers, we find that both κxx and κxy are dominated by phonons. A T/H scaling of κxx unambiguously reveals that longitudinal heat current is substantially impeded by resonant scattering of phonons on paramagnetic spins. Upon cooling, the resonant scattering is strongly affe…

The temperature dependence of Cr3+:YAG zero-phonon lines.

This paper deals with the photoluminescence temperature dependence of the zero-phonon lines of Cr(3+) ions in an yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) matrix. Experimental data were analysed in the framework of electron-phonon coupling in the quadratic approximation and it was found that Cr(3+) ions in the YAG matrix are strongly coupled with lattice vibrations, with a Debye temperature of about 550 K and a value of the quadratic coupling constant of 0.65. The analysis of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the photoluminescence linewidth is performed and the results obtained are comp

Demagnetization-Driven Nanoscale Chirality-Selective Phonon Transport.

Chiral-lattice degrees of freedom can offer novel chirality-selective functionalities for thermotronic applications. Chiral phonons, which carry both heat and angular momentum, can arise from broken chiral degeneracy in phonon bands or from angular momentum transfer from photons or spins. Here, we demonstrate a nanoscale chirality-selective phonon transport based on a simple heterostructure of ferromagnetic [Co/Pt] multilayers and insulating chiral α-SiO2. Using magneto-optic thermometry, we show that the effective thermal conductivity of α-SiO2 depends systematically on both the magnetization…

Probing Phonon Polaritons via Electron Microscopy: A Review.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are hybrid excitations arising from the coupling of optical phonons and electromagnetic waves, providing a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interaction studies and engineering the infrared response of polar materials. Their capability to confine and manipulate light well below the diffraction limit, combined with low losses, has enabled breakthroughs in subwavelength waveguiding, hyperlensing, infrared imaging, and molecular sensing. While far-field spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy have been widely used to characterize PhPs, t…

Spin-Phonon Coupling and Magnetic Ordering in Layered CrPS4.

Magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials offers a platform for exploring dimensionality-tuned magnetic ordering and distinct spin-phonon coupling. Among such materials, CrPS4 stands out as an air-stable A-type antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature of 36 K. Here, we investigate the evolution of phonon modes influenced by magnetic ordering in CrPS4 across varying temperatures and layer thicknesses by using Raman spectroscopy, supported by theoretical calculations. Due to weak interlayer coupling, the thickness-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are negligible (<0.5 cm-1). Notably, anoma

Bypassing Nonlocal Phenomena in Metals Using Phonon-Polaritons.

Electromagnetic design relies on an accurate understanding of light-matter interactions yet often overlooks electronic length scales. Under extreme confinement, this omission can lead to nonclassical effects such as nonlocal response. Here, we use mid-infrared phonon-polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) screened by monocrystalline gold flakes to push the limits of nanolight confinement unobstructed by nonlocal phenomena, even when the polariton phase velocity approaches the Fermi velocities of electrons in gold. We employ near-field imaging to probe polaritons in nanometer-thin crystals

Spin-Phonon Coupling in Ferromagnetic Monolayer Chromium Tribromide.

Novel 2D magnets exhibit intrinsic electrically tunable magnetism down to the monolayer limit, which has significant value for nonvolatile memory and emerging computing device applications. In these compounds, spin-phonon coupling (SPC) typically plays a crucial role in magnetic fluctuations, magnon dissipation, and ultimately establishing long-range ferromagnetic order. However, a systematic understanding of SPC in 2D magnets that combines theory and experiment is still lacking. In this work, monolayer chromium tribromide is studied to investigate SPC in 2D magnets via Raman spectroscopy and

Deterministic Single-Phonon Source Triggered by a Single Photon.

We propose a scheme that enables the deterministic generation of single phonons at gigahertz frequencies triggered by single photons in the near infrared. This process is mediated by a quantum dot embedded on chip in an optomechanical circuit, which allows for the simultaneous control of the relevant photonic and phononic frequencies. We devise new optomechanical circuit elements that constitute the necessary building blocks for the proposed scheme and are readily implementable within the current state-of-the-art of nanofabrication. This will open new avenues for implementing quantum functiona…

Modulating Photons and Phonons in Graphene-Based Phase Change Materials for Solar-Thermal-Electrical Generation.

Solar-thermal-electrical generators offer a promising route for the conversion of solar energy into electricity. Their reliability can be enhanced by integrating phase change materials (PCMs) to buffer thermal fluctuations and ensure stable operation, yet conventional PCMs often suffer from low thermal conductivity and poor solar capture. Herein, photosensitive Co/C-anchored reduced graphene oxide (rGO) conductive framework was fabricated via metal-organic framework (MOF) pyrolysis-assisted zinc volatilization strategy. This design enables the in situ formation of MOF-derived uniformly dispers

Remote imaging of single cell 3D morphology with ultrafast coherent phonons and their resonance harmonics.

Cell morphological analysis has long been used in cell biology and physiology for abnormality identification, early cancer detection, and dynamic change analysis under specific environmental stresses. This work reports on the remote mapping of cell 3D morphology with an in-plane resolution limited by optics and an out-of-plane accuracy down to a tenth of the optical wavelength. For this, GHz coherent acoustic phonons and their resonance harmonics were tracked by means of an ultrafast opto-acoustic technique. After illustrating the measurement accuracy with cell-mimetic polymer films we map the…

Interface-Controlled Phonon Renormalization in Quasi-Freestanding Graphene Nanoribbons.

Metal substrates suppress the intrinsic vibrational degrees of freedom of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) through interfacial hybridization and damping, limiting access to their one-dimensional phonon physics. Here, we show that reducing ribbon-substrate coupling unlocks intrinsic phonon excitations in metal-supported GNRs. This is achieved by intercalating a self-limited, chemically inert bismuth monolayer beneath pregrown 7-armchair GNRs on Au(111), forming an ordered van der Waals interface that strongly suppresses interfacial damping while preserving ribbon continuity. Electron-Phonon Coupling in Weakly Quantum-Confined Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted increasing research interest because of their exceptional optoelectronic properties, in which electron-phonon coupling (EPC) plays a crucial role by dictating how charge carriers interact with lattice vibrations. The underlying EPC mechanism is dominated by the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon scattering mediated by the Fröhlich interaction. Although EPC has been extensively studied in bulk systems, a clear understanding of how crystal-structure factors influence EPC in NCs remains lacking. In particular, a comprehensive picture of EPC e

Spontaneous Spin-Orbit Coupling Induced by Quantum Phonon Dynamics.

Spin-orbit coupling is a important focus of condensed matter physics as well as electron-phonon interaction. Traditionally spin-orbit coupling is regarded as a single-body effect arising from relativity, and electron-phonon interaction is often considered spin-independent. In this Letter, we bridge spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interaction, and propose a novel mechanism to dynamically generate spin-orbit coupling. Based on symmetry analysis, a spin-dependent electron-phonon coupling model is constructed, and is solved by sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The phase di
