The global population is projected to experience a rapid increase in the future, which poses a challenge to global food sustainability. The "Green Revolution" beginning in the 1960s allowed grain yield to reach two billion tons in 2000 due to the introduction of semi-dwarfing genes in cereal crops. Semi-dwarfing genes reduce the gibberellin (GA) signal, leading to short plant stature, which improves the lodging resistance and harvest index under modern fertilization practices. Here, we reviewed the literature on the function of GA in plant growth and development, and the role of GA-related gen

The afila (af) mutation causes the replacement of leaflets by a branched mass of tendrils in the compound leaves of pea - Pisum sativum L. This mutation was first described in 1953, and several reports of spontaneous af mutations and induced mutants with a similar phenotype exist. Despite widespread introgression into breeding material, the nature of af and the origin of the alleles used remain unknown. Here, we combine comparative genomics with reverse genetic approaches to elucidate the genetic determinants of af. We also investigate haplotype diversity using a set of AfAf and afaf cultivars

Row-column designs play an important role in applications where two orthogonal sources of error need to be controlled for by blocking. Field or greenhouse experiments, in which experimental units are arranged as a rectangular array of experimental units, are a prominent example. In plant breeding, the amount of seed available for the treatments to be tested may be so limited that only one experimental unit per treatment can be accommodated. In such settings, augmented designs become an interesting option, where a small set of treatments, for which sufficient seed is available, is replicated ac

Cyclamen is an economically important ornamental plant widely cultivated for its diverse floral characteristics and adaptation to cool climates. Despite its horticultural significance, genomic resources for this species remain limited, hindering molecular studies and genomics-assisted breeding. Here, we report the first highly contiguous nuclear genome assembly of C. persicum generated using high-fidelity long-read sequencing. The assembled genome spans 1.48 Gb, consisting of 126 contigs with an N50 length of 52.3 Mb. Telomeric repeat analysis identified 8 contigs containing telomeric sequence

Bounteous modern and innovative biotechnological tools have resulted in progressive development in the barley breeding program. Doubled haploids developed (homozygous lines) in a single generation is significant. Since the first discovery of haploid plants in 1920 and, in particular, after discovering in vitro androgenesis in 1964 by Guha and Maheshwari, the doubled haploidy techniques have been progressively developed and constantly improved. It has shortened the cultivar development time and has been extensively used in: genetic studies, gene mapping, marker/trait association, and QTL studie

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease of wheat, causing yield losses, reduced grain quality, and mycotoxin contamination. Breeding can mitigate the severity of FHB epidemics, especially with genomics-assisted methods. The mechanisms underlying resistance to FHB in wheat have been extensively studied, including phenological traits and genome-wide markers associated with FHB severity. Here, we aimed to improve genomic prediction for FHB resistance across breeding programs by incorporating FHB-correlated traits and FHB-associated loci as model covariates. We combined phenotypic data

BACKGROUND: In dry and semi-arid areas, salinity is the most serious hazard to agriculture, which can affect plant growth and development adversely. Over-accumulation of Na+ in plant organs can cause an osmotic effect and an imbalance in nutrient uptake. However, its harmful impact can vary depending on genotype, period of exposure to stress, plant development stage, and concentration and content of salt. To overcome the unfavorable effect of salinity, plants have developed two kinds of tolerance strategies based on either minimizing the entrance of salts by the roots or administering their co

BACKGROUND: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeding must accelerate to meet increasing global demand, yet traditional field-based programs remain a major bottleneck. While speed breeding (SB) and speed vernalization (SV) have emerged as transformative tools for generation acceleration, their practical application for official cultivar release through comprehensive field validation remains remarkably limited.
RESULTS: We developed the new high-yielding bread wheat cultivar 'Irum' using an integrated speed breeding (ISB) system that combines SV with SB protocols. The ISB system facilitated the ra

This study analyzed the contribution of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) improved germplasm to rice varietal development and yield growth in India. Out of the total of 1436 released high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of rice, 769 (53%) were developed using IRRI improved germplasm at different stages of the breeding cycle. IR8 alone was used 245 times during this period. Most of IRRI's elite lines were used for the improvement of important varietal traits, such as short duration and resistance to biotic stresses. The share of IRRI elite germplasm in all HYVs released in India was 22.8%.

Japanese weedy melon exhibits unique sex expression with interactions between previously reported sex determination genes and two novel loci. Sex expression contributes to fruit quality and yield in the Cucurbitaceae. In melon, orchestrated regulation by sex determination genes explains the mechanism of sex expression, resulting in a great variety of sexual morphologies. In this study, we examined the Japanese weedy melon UT1, which does not follow the reported model of sex expression. We conducted QTL analysis using F2 plants for flower sex on the main stem and the lateral branch and mapped "

This review considers the processes of morphogenesis used in the development of propagation methods and the creation of a new starting material for sugar beet. It has been demonstrated that methods of particulation, in vitro microcloning and cell breeding that reflect non-sexual forms of plant reproduction increase the effectiveness of breeding experiments. The review describes the in vitro culture methods maintaing a tendency in plants for vegetative propagation and stimulating increase in genetic variability of properties when mutagens such as ethyl methanesulfonate, alien genetic structures

Tropospheric ozone (O3 ) is a significant abiotic stressor whose rising concentration negatively influences plant growth. Studies related to the differential response of Abelmoschus cytotypes to elevated O3 treatment are scarce and need further exploration to recognise the role of polyploidisation in stress tolerance. In this study, we analysed the changes in growth pattern, ultrastructure, physiology and foliar protein profile occurring under O3 stress in Abelmoschus moschatus (monoploid), Abelmoschus esculentus (diploid) and Abelmoschus caillei (triploid). Our findings showed that higher sto

Breeding for improved leaf photosynthesis is considered as a viable approach to increase crop yield. Whether it should be improved in combination with other traits has not been assessed critically. Based on the quantitative crop model GECROS that interconnects various traits to crop productivity, we review natural variation in relevant traits, from biochemical aspects of leaf photosynthesis to morpho-physiological crop characteristics. While large phenotypic variations (sometimes >2-fold) for leaf photosynthesis and its underlying biochemical parameters were reported, few quantitative trait lo

PURPOSE: The nature and kind of some successful mutations achieved through gamma radiation at CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow are reviewed and described in this article. Medicinal and aromatic crops (MACs) came under the mutation-breeding program very late - perhaps during the 1980s in India. Nevertheless, successes have been glaring and unique too. The plant breeders of the Institute concerted attempts were made for the genetic restructuring of the plant-frame in Hyoscyamus niger L. (black henbane) and Cymbopogon martinii (palmarosa), enhanced alkaloid biosynthesis in henbane, weak, or lack of latex bios

One of the limiting factors in breeding and genetic research is the time required to develop pure lines. This is due, on the one hand, to the prolonged vegetative period of a single generation and, on the other hand, to the specifics of inbreeding, which typically requires 4-6 consecutive generations of self-pollination in plant material. Researchers have always sought approaches that enable the rapid development of homozygous plant lines. Consequently, methods such as greenhouse cultivation during the autumn-winter period, single-seed descent, shuttle breeding, embryo culture, and doubled hap

Apple scab, caused by Venturia inaequalis, is a major fungal disease worldwide. Cultivation of scab-resistant cultivars would reduce the chemical footprint of apple production. However, new apple cultivars carrying durable resistances should be developed to prevent or at least slow the breakdown of resistance against races of V. inaequalis. One way to achieve durable resistance is to pyramid multiple scab resistance genes in a cultivar. The choice of the resistance genes to be combined in the pyramids should take into account the frequency of resistance breakdown and the geographical distribut

The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Dutch.), is the only vegetable belonging to the rosacea family. All strawberry species have now emerged from wild species and belong to the genus Fragaria, being that this genus presents more than 45 described species, and only 11 are considered natural species. Due to the octoploid nature of strawberry and its variability after hybridization, selecting one or more characters may result in unfavorable genotypes and even the exclusion of promising ones, because negative genetic correlations have been observed among them that cause inefficient selection. There

Feeding a growing world demands smarter crop breeding. A recent study by Yao et al. analysed 108 maize hybrids across three breeding eras, identifying favourable alleles for plant architecture and dense planting. Pyramiding these alleles into elite parental lines while retaining yield-related alleles produced improved hybrids, demonstrating measurable yield gains.

Anther culture is an efficient biotechnological tool in modern plant breeding programs to produce new varieties and parental lines in hybrid seed productions. However, some bottlenecks-low induction rate, genotype dependency, albinism-restrict the widespread utilization of in vitro anther culture in rice breeding, especially in Oryza sativa ssp. indica (indica) genotypes, while an improved efficient protocol can shorten the process of breeding. Three different induction media (N6NDK, N6NDZ, Ali-1) and four plant regeneration media (mMSNBK1, MSNBK3, MSNBKZ1, MSNBKZ2) were tested with five indic
