More flowers, more pollinators, less fruit: drought increases insect visitation but reduces yield in cucumber.

Climate change intensifies drought frequency, posing risks to pollinators both directly and indirectly through changes in floral resource availability. We tested how water limitation alters pollinator-relevant floral traits, visitation, and plant reproductive outcomes in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) using an outdoor field experiment with conventional and drought-tolerant cucumber cultivars. We manipulated water availability (well-watered vs. water-limited) and quantified floral display, nectar rewards, and pollinator visitation during two sampling periods eight days after treatment onset. Contra

Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) Exposure to Pesticide Residues in Nectar and Pollen in Urban and Suburban Environments from Four Regions of the United States.

The risk of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) exposure to pesticide residues while foraging for nectar and pollen is commonly explored in the context of agroecosystems. However, pesticides are also used in urban and suburban areas for vegetation management, vector control, and the management of ornamental plants in public and private landscapes. The extent to which pesticides pose a health risk to honey bees in these settings remains unclear. We addressed this at a landscape scale by conducting pesticide residue screening analyses on 768 nectar and 862 pollen samples collected monthly over 2 years

A Molecular and Cellular Mechanism for Bitter Taste in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is a vector of Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya and yellow fever, disease-causing viruses impacting millions of people annually across the globe. Female mosquitoes transmit pathogens through serial blood-feeding, while both male and female mosquitoes feed on plant resources. Contact chemosensation (taste) guides these two feeding modes in both positive ways, feeding readily on sugar in nectar or ATP in blood, and negative ways, demonstrating aversion to chemically diverse bitter compounds in blood or sugar meals. Here, we identify a receptor, AaegGr14, that i

Effects of Habitat Types on Pollinators and Seasonal Variations in Plant-Insect Pollination Networks in Nanchong, China.

Land-use type acts as a key anthropogenic factor shaping the diversity of pollinator communities. Different habitats indirectly alter pollinator species richness, abundance and community structure by regulating vegetation coverage and the abundance of host and nectar plants. To clarify the mechanisms underlying habitat effects on pollinator assemblages, we conducted transect surveys to investigate pollinator communities across three typical habitats (forest, cropland and urban area) in Nanchong City. Our results revealed that pollinator alpha diversity was significantly higher in forests than

Solitary bee larvae modify bacterial diversity of pollen provisions in the stem-nesting bee, Osmia cornifrons (Megachilidae).

Microbes, including diverse bacteria and fungi, play an important role in the health of both solitary and social bees. Among solitary bee species, in which larvae remain in a closed brood cell throughout development, experiments that modified or eliminated the brood cell microbiome through sterilization indicated that microbes contribute substantially to larval nutrition and are in some cases essential for larval development. To better understand how feeding larvae impact the microbial community of their pollen/nectar provisions, we examine the temporal shift in the bacterial community in the

First direct quantification of floral handling costs in bees.

Floral handling can be energetically costly for bees, yet these costs are rarely measured. We provide the first direct quantification of the metabolic cost of floral buzzing in bumblebees and evaluate its ecological significance. Using flow-through respirometry synchronized with laser vibrometry, we measured carbon dioxide production during floral buzzing by Bombus terrestris and compared it with flight take-off, which is powered by the same thoracic muscles. Floral buzzing required high muscular effort compared with other behaviours, with approximately 0.10 J per event and mass-specific power

Age-dependent perception of floral emissions and the role of CO2 in regulating nectar-seeking in mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes require access to nectar for energy and reproduction, a behaviour which varies depending on adult maturation and gonotrophic cycle. To locate and discriminate among nectar resources, mosquitoes may make use of various floral emanations, including volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide (CO2). In order to identify the bioactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in one of the preferred host plants of Anopheles mosquitoes, Lantana camara, combined electrophysiological and chemical analyses were performed using ectopically expressed Anopheles coluzzii odorant receptors (Ors) in th

Neurogenetics: Young adult mosquito receptor found that leads females to nectar.

Female mosquitoes shift from plant to animal hosts as they mature, but how this is accomplished is unknown. A new study reveals that an olfactory receptor can guide young females towards nectar sources, and its absence marks the shift towards blood-feeding.

Differential bacterial endophytome in Foc-resistant banana cultivar displays enhanced antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc).

Diverse endophytes with multiple functions exist in different banana cultivars. However, the diversity of cultivable bacterial endophytome that contributes to antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc) in resistant and susceptible banana cultivars is mostly unknown. In the present study, we isolated bacterial endophytes from resistant Yengambi KM5 (AAA) and susceptible banana cultivar Ney Poovan (AB) to determine the diversity of cultivable bacterial endophytes. Our study revealed the presence of 56 cultivable bacterial endophytes and 6 nectar-associated bacteria in YKM

Sugary secretions of wasp galls: a want-to-be extrafloral nectar?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The most widespread form of protective mutualisms is represented by plants bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) that attract ants and other arthropods for indirect defence. Another, but less common, form of sugary secretion for indirect defence occurs in galls induced by cynipid wasps. Until now, such galls have been reported only for cynipid wasps that infest oak trees in the northern hemisphere. This study provides the first evidence of galls that exude sugary secretions in the southern hemisphere and asks whether they can be considered as analogues of plants' EFNs. MET

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Tilia mandshurica reveals divergence of duplicated TPP genes associated with fructose-rich nectar formation.

Tilia mandshurica is an important woody nectar plant, but the genomic and transcriptional basis of its nectar sugar accumulation remains poorly understood. Here, we generated a chromosome-level reference genome for T. mandshurica and integrated comparative genomics, gene duplication analysis, RNA-seq across seven floral developmental stages, qRT-PCR validation, carbohydrate measurements and metabolite profiling. Gene family analysis revealed lineage-specific expansion of families involved in carbohydrate metabolism, ion transport and specialized metabolism. Ks and synteny analyses identified a

Global assessment of honeybee exposure to pesticides through guttation consumption: An indicator approach.

Guttation consumption is a potential pathway of pesticide residue exposure in honeybees. However, modeling tools for assessing honeybee exposure to pesticide residues in guttation drops are lacking. In this study, we propose an indicator-based approach for qualitatively or quantitatively analyzing the guttation-based exposure pathway, allowing us to conduct region-specific pesticide residue exposure assessments for honeybees. Exposure scores (the product of guttation production and residue level scores) were established to compare or rank honeybee exposure to pesticide residues via guttation i

Quantitative effects of leaf area removal on indirect defense of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) in nature.

Plants employ a diverse array of defensive traits against multiple enemies. While many plant defenses are well-studied, quantitative feedback effects of leaf area loss on the expression of defensive traits remain little understood. Extrafloral nectar (EFN; an indirect defense acting via the attraction of carnivorous arthropods) is generally considered 'cheap' as it is composed mainly of photosynthates. However, to what extent EFN secretion is related to the amount of intact photosynthetic leaf area is unknown. In this study, we measured the production of EFN, ant attraction, and herbivore dama

Plant Resource Use and Pattern of Usage by the Naturalized Orchid Bee (Euglossa dilemma: Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Florida.

The Neotropical orchid bee Euglossa dilemma was found to be naturalized in southern Florida in 2003, and, by 2022, it had colonized the southern half of Florida. Observations of the bee's collection of plant resources, primarily flowers, were made from 2003 through to 2022 to document its plant usage and understand the patterns of its plant usage. The bee utilized 259 plant taxa, 237 species, and 22 horticultural forms, in 156 genera and 56 families in 263 total uses. Of 247 taxa of flowers, 120 were visited primarily for nectar, 46 for both nectar and pollen, 60 for pollen, including 42 buzz-

Neither nectar nor deception: the role of floral rewards in the pollination system of Laelia (Orchidaceae: Laeliinae).

Orchids offer a variety of floral rewards to pollinators. In many orchid groups, however, the transfer of pollen is based on food-deception, as in the case of Laelia (including Schomburgkia s.s.), a genus assigned to the Neotropical subtribe Laeliinae. Here, we report on the reproductive biology of a Brazilian member of this subtribe, namely, Laelia gloriosa, occurring in the forested areas of southeastern Brazil. The study includes analyses of floral morphology, histochemistry, and the chemical analysis of floral rewards and scents. Pollinators and pollination mechanism data were collected in

Trichoid sensilla on honey bee proboscises as inspiration for micro-viscometers.

Sensing physical properties of liquids, such as viscosity, is of great significance for both biological organisms and industrial applications. For terrestrial organisms feeding on liquids, such as honey bees that forage nectar, sensing viscosity may help to determine the quality of food sources. Previous experiments showed that honey bees exhibit strong preferences for less viscous nectar; however, the physical mechanism underlying how they perceive viscosity remains unexplored. In this study, we propose that the western honey bee (Apis melliferaL.) is capable of distinguishing viscosity using

Phoretic mites (Rhinoseius spp.) in Apodiformes from Cerrado and Pantanal Biomes in midwestern Brazil.

Nasal mites are commonly found in hummingbirds (Apodiformes). In most cases, endoparasitic mites were reported to parasitize the respiratory system, particularly the anterior nasal chambers, larynx, trachea, lungs, and the air and conjunctival sacs. However, some mites are only carried by hummingbirds, because flowers serving as a nutrient source for these small mites, such as for Apodiformes, a tropical nectar-feeding in their natural habitat. From August 2012 to May 2014, humminbirds were captured using mist nets, and examined for the presence of nasal mites (identified according to specific

A gustatory receptor mediates sucrose detection to enhance moth reproductive fitness.

The mutualism between pollinators and flowering plants is a fundamental interaction in ecosystems, mediated by nectar rewards. Sucrose, a major component of floral nectar, is a key driver of pollinator foraging, yet the sensory mechanisms underlying sucrose detection are poorly defined. Here we demonstrate that the pollinator Mythimna separata exhibits a strong sex-independent preference for sucrose, which directly enhances reproductive fitness. We identify MsepGR5, a gustatory receptor expressed in antennal sensilla chaetica, as a key receptor mediating sucrose detection. Crucially, genetic a

Sexual dimorphism and female advantage hypothesis in the gynomonoecious-gynodioecious Dianthus plumarius (Caryophyllaceae).

To explain the co-existence and maintenance of females along with hermaphrodite plants, the female advantage hypothesis has been proposed where females should show greater fecundity compared to their conspecific hermaphrodites. On the other hand, greater attraction would be selected in the hermaphrodites to increase their male function, potentially leading to larger showier flowers, with more rewards. Here, I tested the sexual dimorphism trade-off hypothesis with the gynomonoecious-gynodioecious Dianthus plumarius (Caryophyllaceae), in the gardens of Bariloche (Patagonia, Argentina). I measure

Bees modulate behavior during nectar foraging in response to direct ant aggression (Hymenoptera: Apidae and Formicidae).

Nectar thieves may seriously impact pollinator foraging behavior and, ultimately, pollination services in natural and agricultural contexts. Despite strong interest in pollinators and their services, there remain gaps in our knowledge as to how ants influence bee foraging decisions. Here, we characterized ant-bee interactions at shared resources and the subsequent behavioral sequences exhibited by bees. We found that two-thirds of bumble bee (Bombus impatiens Cresson) behaviors at nectar resources involved direct interactions with Argentine ants (Linepithema humile Mayr). Consistent with predi
