[Investigation and analysis of acute poisoning of organic fluorine mixed gas in a fluorine polymerization plant].

In January 2021, an acute chemical poisoning incident occurred at a fluorine polymerization plant. Through the analysis of the occupational health situation of the enterprise, combined with the clinical manifestations of the poisoned patients and the laboratory examination results, it was determined that the incident was an acute poisoning incident caused by the inhalation of organic fluorine mixed gas in the fluorine polymerization plant. Subsequently, it was clarified that the accident was caused by the illegal operation of the employees of the fluorine polymerization plant, which caused the

Acute death Camas (Toxicoscordion venenosum) plant poisoning in seven family members following foraging for wild onions.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional plant ingestions and poisoning are common. Generally, these ingestions are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Increased toxicity is often associated with the foraging for plants incorrectly identified as edible plants. We present a case series of seven family members poisoned by suspected Death Camas, also known as Meadow Death Camas, (Toxicoscordion venenosum), when the plant was misidentified as edible while foraging for Wild Onion (Allium canadense). CASE SERIES: Five children and two adults presented to the emergency department after eating bulbs of suspected

Poisonous Piperidine Plants and the Biodiversity of Norditerpenoid Alkaloids for Leads in Drug Discovery: Experimental Aspects.

There are famous examples of simple (e.g., hemlock, Conium maculatum L.) and complex (e.g., opium poppy, Papaver somniferum L., Papaveraceae) piperidine-alkaloid-containing plants. Many of these are highly poisonous, whilst pepper is well-known gastronomically, and several substituted piperidine alkaloids are therapeutically beneficial as a function of dose and mode of action. This review covers the taxonomy of the genera Aconitum, Delphinium, and the controversial Consolida. As part of studying the biodiversity of norditerpenoid alkaloids (NDAS), the majority of which possess an N-ethyl group

Mercury, not sulphur dioxide, poisoning as cause of smelter disease in industrial plants producing sulphuric acid.

Several episodes of "smelter disease", previously assumed to be caused by sulphur dioxide (SO2) poisoning, have been reported in workers replacing pipes in sulphuric acid manufacturing plants. One such incident, affecting 20 men, was recorded in Akita, Japan, in July, 1993, but the protection these workers used suggested that some cause other than SO2 needed to be looked for. 10 workers were affected despite wearing respirators with SO2 cartridges, the symptoms including dyspnoea, diarrhoea, colicky pain, muscle pain and eczema with erythema. Subsequently 10 other workers using face masks with

The protection of invertebrates, fish, and vascular plants against inorganic mercury poisoning by sulfur and selenium derivatives.

Protection of organisms against mercury (Hg) poisoning is most commonly associated with the antagonistic effects of selenium (Se)-compounds against mercury alkyls in higher animals. This study shows that there is no consistent difference among Periodic Group VIA derivatives including S(IV), S(II) organic, Se (IV), Se (II) organic, possibly Se VI, as well and Te (IV) in their ability to protect against mercury poisoning. The organisms used in assays were: Coleus explants (leaf abscission); turnip (germination); pea (growth inhibition and Hg uptake); a planarian (regeneration); the brineshrimp (

An appraisal of traditional knowledge of plant poisoning of livestock and its validation through acute toxicity assay in rats.

Background: Kashmir Himalaya hosts the most diverse and rich flora in the world, which serves as grazing land for millions of small ruminants in the area. While most plant species are beneficial, some can be poisonous, causing economic losses and animal health issues for livestock. Consequently, this study is the first comprehensive report on the traditional phyto-toxicological knowledge in District Muzaffarabad and the assessment of its authenticity through experimental studies in rats. Methods: The data regarding traditional knowledge was gathered from 70 key respondents through semi-structu

Global metabolic changes induced by plant-derived pyrrolizidine alkaloids following a human poisoning outbreak and in a mouse model.

Several hundred cases of Hirmi Valley Liver Disease (HVLD), an often fatal liver injury, occurred from 2001 to 2011 in a cluster of rural villages in Tigray, Ethiopia. HVLD is principally caused by contamination of the food supply with plant derived pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), with high exposure to the pesticide DDT among villagers increasing their susceptibility. In an untargeted global approach we aimed to identify metabolic changes induced by PA exposure through 1H NMR spectroscopic based metabolic profiling. We analysed spectra acquired from urine collected from HVLD cases and controls

Nature's Poison Pill: A Case of Digoxin-Like Toxicity From the Seed of the Ornamental Plant Thevetia peruviana.

Thevetia peruviana (yellow oleander) is an ornamental shrub found in tropical and subtropical regions, including tropical America. All parts of the plant are toxic due to cardiac glycosides, which can cause severe cardiotoxicity and arrhythmias. Poisoning is associated with significant mortality, often due to deliberate self-harm. This report describes a case of accidental ingestion of Thevetia peruviana seeds by a patient who believed that they could treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The patient presented to the emergency department within 30 minutes of ingesting yellow oleander seeds

Three poisonous plants (Oenanthe, Cicuta and Anamirta) that antagonise the effect of γ-aminobutyric acid in human brain.

Although we are familiar with common British plants that are poisonous, such as Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) and Aconitum napellus (monkshood), the two most poisonous plants in the British Flora are Oenanthe crocata (dead man's fingers) and Cicuta virosa (cowbane). In recent years their poisons have been shown to be polyacetylenes (n-C2H2). The plants closely resemble two of the most common plants in the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), celery and parsley. Unwittingly, they are ingested by naive foragers and death occurs very rapidly. The third plant Anamirta derives from South-East As

Cyanide poisoning in cattle from Dysphania glomulifera (red crumbweed): using the internet for rapid plant identification and diagnostic advice.

A 300-strong Angus-Brahman cattle herd near Springsure, central Queensland, was being fed Acacia shirleyi (lancewood) browse during drought and crossed a 5-hectare, previously burnt area with an almost pure growth of Dysphania glomulifera subspecies glomulifera (red crumbweed) on their way to drinking water. Forty cows died of cyanide poisoning over 2 days before further access to the plant was prevented. A digital image of a plant specimen made on a flat-bed scanner and transmitted by email was used to identify D glomulifera. Specific advice on the plant's poisonous properties and management

[Hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal for treating acute poisoning by remedies, plant protectants, and fungi. I. Remedies (author's transl)].

Hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal is a novel procedure for treating acute poisoning. It enables the elimination of both, water-soluble and liposoluble toxins. Hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal has proved to be superior to hemodialysis in the treatment of barbiturate or bromocarbamide poisoning both under experimental conditions as well as in the ward. Analogous statements may be made for the therapy of glutethimide poisoning. Methaqualone, on the other hand, could not be eliminated sufficiently well in animal trials. Intoxications by "mild" analgetics, such as paracetamol

Therapeutic Segmental Pulmonary Lavage for Methanol Inhalation Poisoning in a Shrimp Processing Plant Worker: A Novel Approach to Toxic Inhalants.

Inhalation of methanol vapor is a rare but potentially life-threatening occupational hazard, particularly in environments with inadequate ventilation and safety controls. We report the case of an 18-year-old male shrimp processing worker who developed acute respiratory failure following accidental inhalation of methanol vapors mislabeled as kerosene. The patient presented with severe dyspnea, hypoxemia, metabolic acidosis, and radiographic findings of diffuse pulmonary infiltrates. He required mechanical ventilation, corticosteroids, antibiotics, and intensive supportive care. Bronchoscopy rev

Alkaloids from the poisonous plant Ipomoea carnea: effects on intracellular lysosomal glycosidase activities in human lymphoblast cultures.

There is natural intoxication of livestock by the ingestion of Ipomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) in Brazil and other parts of the world. The alkaloidal glycosidase inhibitors swainsonine, 2-epi-lentiginosine, and calystegines B(1), B(2), B(3), and C(1) have been identified as constituents of this plant. Swainsonine is a potent inhibitor of rat lysosomal alpha-mannosidase, with an IC(50) value of 0.02 microM, whereas calystegines B(1), B(2), and C(1) are potent inhibitors of rat lysosomal beta-glucosidase, with IC(50) values of 2.1, 0.75, and 0.84 microM, respectively. The action of swainsonine r

Ability of certain plant extracts traditionally used to treat ciguatera fish poisoning to inhibit nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an intertropical ichthyosarcotoxism that manifests in complex assortment of symptoms in humans. Ciguatoxins (CTXs), issued from Gambierdicus spp., are causative agents of this intoxication. We have recently demonstrated that a Pacific CTX (P-CTX-1B) strongly modulated iNOS expression, leading to overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. NO produced in large amounts is involved in a wide range of pathophysiological processes. Many traditional remedies are commonly used in the Pacific against CFP. In this context
