Solitary fibrous tumours are a rare group of tumours that originate from connective tissues such as the pleura and mediastinum. When growing within the thoracic cavity these tumours exert pressure on vital organs and large vessels. We have successfully operated on two patients with large solitary fibrous tumours and managed the pathophysiological changes manifested as superior vena cava syndrome resulting from these tumours.

A 61-year-old non-smoking Turkish woman presented with chest pain for 10 months. Computed tomography of the chest revealed a solitary, relatively well circumscribed, heterogeneous mass of 4 x 6 cm diameter in left posterior-lateral hemithorax. On thoracotomy, an extraparanchymal mass destructing the ribs was determined. Mass excision and partial chest wall resection were performed. On histopathologic examination, this mass showed features of the hyaline vascular type of Castleman's disease.

The injection of PAF-acether into the pleural cavity of the rat induced a maximal exudate after 30-60 min which then decreased and disappeared after 24 hours. In addition, the mediator produced a decrease in the number of leukocytes in the pleural cavity 30 min after injection and an increase in the number of cells after 6 hours.

We present the case of a patient with pain in the right hypochondrium, dyspnea, deterioration of his general condition and a positive anti-Echinoccocus antibodies test. Ultrasound and thoraco-abdominal computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a complex hepatic cystic lesion with a transdiaphragmatic fistulous tract trajectory, directed to the pleural space. The lesion was compatible with a complicated hydatid cyst with direct rupture to the pleural cavity. Treatment with albendazole prior to surgery was started.

Rupture of an aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta into the right pleural cavity is an uncommon event and its prognosis is rapidly fatal. Its diagnosis is difficult and it may remain unrecognized. We report the case of a 66-year-old patient with a haemorrhagic shock associated with a spontaneous right haemothorax. A ruptured aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta was diagnosed during the surgical procedure.

We conducted a cadaveric feasibility study of two intrapleural applications of single-use bronchoscopes. In Approach 1, a 2.7 mm bronchoscope was used as a visual stylet inside a 20-Fr trocar catheter to confirm pleural entry and drain-tip position. We report a case of a massive mediastinal teratoma in an 18-year-old woman who presented with a short history of exertional dyspnoea. The tumor arose from the left lobe of the thymus and extended into the left pleural cavity, completely compressing the left lung and extensively shifting the mediastinum to the right. Measuring 23 cm x 17 cm x 9 cm and weighing 2005 g it is one of the largest anterior mediastinal teratomas reported. It was successfully treated by surgical resection, with a final pathological diagnosis of a grades 1-2 immature teratoma.
