Miliary tuberculosis is caused by the hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and consists of 1.5% of all tuberculosis cases. It i … cerebrospinal fluid findings were normal, cranial MRI revealed contrast enhanced nodular lesions in pons, cerebellum, and right parietal region. The case is presented to intensify the importance of CNS investigation even if the patient with miliary tuberculosis has no neurologic finding.

To understand the relationship between brainstem lesions and auditory neurology in patients with multiple sclerosis, we compared behavioural … recise neural timing can reveal behavioural deficits for multiple sclerosis lesions of the auditory pons that are otherwise 'silent'. Of all neurological systems the auditory system at the level of the pons is probably the most sensitive to multiple sclerosis lesions, because of its exceptional dependence upon neural timing in the microsecond range and …

Appropriate treatment for intracranial mass lesions depends upon accurate histological diagnosis. Although both advanced generation computed tomographic and magnetic resonance scanners can detect small lesions within the brain stem, only the combination of these advanced imaging tools with stereotactic instrumentation permits safe and accurate pathological diagnosis of such lesions. We present the results of 13 operations performed on 12 patients with mass lesions of the pons and mesencephalon. A definitive diagnosis was obtained in all patients. Aspiration of necrotic tumors (3 patients), neo…

The lateral and medial parabrachial and the Kölliker-Fuse nuclei (NPB/KF) are well known respiratory modulating centers in adulthood, but their role in neonates is largely unknown. We examined the role of the NPB/KF using hemi-sectioned pons-brainstem-spinal cord preparations in neonatal rats. Electrical stimulation applied at various intensities and delays in relation to the onset of spontaneous inspiratory C4 bursts, evoked transient depression or termination of C4 activity. This depression/termination was greatly attenuated either after perfusion of the NMDA-receptor antagonists (MK-801 or …

This study reports 3 cases of pure hemisensory syndrome due to lacunar infarction at the pons, demonstrated by magnetic resonance. In all patients somatosensory evoked potentials were abnormal. In two out of the 3 cases these potentials remained abnormal even after clinical exploration normalized. Due to the distribution of the sensitive pathways it may be assumed that the hemisensory syndrome would be caused by lesions located from the cortex to the pons. By means of clinico-pathological correlations the hemisensory syndrome was attributed to lesions exclusively located at the cerebral cortex…

Secondary pontine hemorrhages are not rare in intracranial hypertension caused by a supratentorial mass lesion. Cerebral herniation and caudal dislocation of the brainstem account for the secondary pontine hemorrhages. In the present case, two unrelated hemorrhages were demonstrated by an early CT. Neurological findings and CT thus suggest that this is a rare case in which supratentorial and infratentorial hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhages occurred simultaneously.

Opioids suppress breathing through actions in the brainstem, including respiratory-related areas of the dorsolateral pons, which contain multiple phenotypes of respiratory patterned neurons. The discharge identity of dorsolateral pontine neurons that are impacted by opioids is unknown. To address this, single neuronal units were recorded in the dorsolateral pons of arterially perfused in situ rat preparations that were perfused with an apneic concentration of the opioid agonist fentanyl, followed by the opioid antagonist naloxone (NLX). Dorsolateral pontine neurons were categorized based on re…

BACKGROUND: Canavan disease is a genetic neurodegenerative leukodystrophy that results in the spongy degeneration of the white matter. Its k … ng.
RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed mainly the involvement of the caudate nucleus and pons extending to the mesencephalon and also the putamen and the thalamus, with no apparent signal increase in the cerebral white matter. A homozygous p.Gly274Arg (c.820A>G) missense mutation was identified.
CONCLUSION: Juvenile Canavan disease with mai …

Lesions at the cavernous sinus and brainstem can be detected by radiologic studies, but a definitive diagnosis depends on histopathologic analysis. We present the case of a 75-year-old woman with symptoms including cranial nerve palsy, hydrocephalus, seizures, and long-term coma caused by squamous cell carcinoma at the cavernous sinus and ventral pons, which was confirmed by an endoscopic endonasal biopsy.

The ancient concept of 'sympathy' originally referred to a putative affinity or force that linked all natural objects together. This notion was later used to explain the manner in which human beings related and felt for each other. A large literature exists on both the physical and psychological definitions of sympathy. Until the nineteenth century the conceptual apparatus of medicine preserved the view that the organs of the human body had a sympathetic affinity for each other. In addition to these 'physiological' (normal) sympathies there were morbid ones which explained the existence of var

Although the anatomy of centrifugal input to gustatory neural structures has been described, little is known of the physiological mechanisms that convey this influence or of their functional significance. As a first step in the investigation of these issues, the effect of a reversible lesion in the gustatory neocortex (GN) on the neural code for taste in the parabrachial nucleus of the pons (PbN) was studied in rats. Electrophysiological responses to taste stimuli bathed over the tongue were recorded from single units in the PbN before, after and following recovery from an infusion of procaine…

This purpose of this analysis was to study risk factors of postoperative nausea (PON) and their strength. Data were obtained during the screening phase of a controlled clinical trial of aromatherapy for PON. In a sample of 1151 postsurgical subjects, 301 (26.2%) reported PON. Significant risk factors identified in the order of odds ratios for nausea were female gender, gastrointestinal surgery, use of volatile anesthesia gases, history of PON, history of motion sickness, and use of opioids after surgery. Although still over 1.0, the risk factors of length of surgery over 1 hour and gynecologic

We report a case of a tiny infarct on the left dorsolateral pons in a 50-year-old man who presented with prolonged and isolated vertigo. The clinical features mimic vestibular neuritis and can easily lead to misdiagnosis. Selective involvement of the left superior vestibular nucleus might explain the resemblance to acute peripheral vestibulopathy.
