Patient identification in blood sampling.

The majority of adverse reports relating to blood transfusions result from human error, including misidentification of patients and incorrect labelling of samples. This article outlines best practice in blood sampling for transfusion (but is recommended for all pathology samples) and the role of patient empowerment in improving safety.

Power: a changing commodity.

"Rapid and tumultuous change in health care as well as business has precipitated a power shift," declares Mr. Hage in this candid discussion of a quality that is both abstract and concrete. Centralized power is no longer the order of the day; in fact, the new stance supports pushing power down into organizations where it can be better used by those closer to the action. The author maintains that effective participants in this new model will learn to share power and respect knowledge as the only tool that wields it.

Empowering the poor: A field study of the social psychological consequences of receiving autonomy or dependency aid in Panama.

This field study investigated the consequences of receiving poverty aid through conditional transfer programmes in the form of autonomy-oriented help (i.e., cash) or dependency-oriented help (i.e., vouchers) in impoverished rural communities in Panama. The empowering effects of autonomy- (vs. dependency-) help have so far only been studied in laboratory settings, or in settings where help could easily be refused. Little is known about the reactions of people who rely on help for extended periods of time. This study provides insights into how aid recipients are influenced by the type of aid the

The perils of perceived power: The dual-threat model of antisemitism.

Antisemitism, characterized by prejudice, discrimination, and hostility toward Jews, is marked by two enduring paradoxes. First, although people typically defer to powerholders, perceptions of Jews as powerful are associated with disdain rather than deference among antisemites. Second, antisemitism emerges among individuals with opposing ideological worldviews, those who strongly support societal hierarchies and those who vehemently oppose them. To explain these paradoxes, we introduce the dual-threat model of antisemitism, which highlights the central role of perceived Jewish power in fueling

Are men more dependent or more powerful than women?

Dependence varies with the balance of power between romantic partners, such that the partner who invests less holds greater power than the partner who invests more. Women's tendency to invest more emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally in romantic relationships puts men in a position of greater power. Men's over-benefited or advantaged status makes them less dependent on romantic partners, not more.

Empowering Parent Carers of Children With Neurodisability in Healthcare Settings: Co-Producing a Theory of Change for Intervention Development.

BACKGROUND: Parent carers of children with neurodisability are empowered when they have greater agency and influence over decisions about their child's care. When parent carers are empowered, it benefits both them and their children. Building on previous work, this study aimed to co-produce a Theory of Change (ToC) to inform the development of a new parent carer empowerment intervention. METHODS: We convened a group of nine participants (four parent carers, three service providers, one service manager, one service commissioner) to co-produce our ToC. The participatory process consisted of str

Public discourse narratives: from 'Secret Aid Worker' discontent to shifting power in humanitarian systems.

Public discourse is rich in meaning, reflecting consensus, dissent, and change. Yet, very little public discourse on the humanitarian sector has been authored by aid workers themselves. We conducted a thematic analysis of the 'Secret Aid Worker' (SAW) series, published in The Guardian newspaper between 2015 and 2018, the only corpus of data on humanitarian life experiences publicly accessible through mainstream media. Our research questions were twofold: how did authors frame their work and appraise humanitarian structures?; and how did they reflect and amplify humanitarian issues of the time?

Empowering Cartilage Restructuring with Biodegradable Magnesium Doped-Silicon Based-Nanoplatforms: Sustained Delivery and Enhanced Differentiation Potential.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage-related diseases, such as hypoplastic chondrodysplasia a rare genetic disorder that affects newborns, causing abnormal cartilage development and restricted skeletal growth. However, the development of effective treatment strategies for chondrodysplasia still faces significant challenges due to limitations in the controlled drug delivery, biocompatibility, and biodegradability of nanomedicines. METHODS: A biodegradable magnesium doped-silicon based-nanoplatforms based on silicon nanoparticles (MON) was constructed. Briefly, the MON was modified with sulfhydryl groups usin

Empowering Riverine Communities in the Amazon: Strategies for Preventing Rabies.

Rabies, caused by the Lyssavirus genus, is a highly lethal zoonotic disease transmitted by animals such as bats and domestic and wild carnivores to humans, claiming nearly 100% of lives. In Brazil, recent evidence suggests an increasing role of bats in human deaths from rabies, particularly in the Amazon region. This neglected tropical disease disproportionately affects impoverished and vulnerable populations in rural areas, where approximately 80% of human cases are concentrated. This article presents research conducted in riverine communities of the Tapajós/Arapiuns Extractive Reserve in Bra

Empowering patients with high myopia: The significance of education.

PURPOSE: To investigate the status of patient education among highly myopic individuals focusing on the presence, sources, content, timing of the education and impact on patients. METHODS: Self-reported data were collected through an online 13-item questionnaire consisting of open and multiple-choice questions. The questionnaire was sent to 250 highly myopic members of a patient organization in the Netherlands, of whom 128 (51%) responded. RESULTS: At least one acute event had occurred in 66% (84/128) of participants at the time of the questionnaire. Among all participants, 25% (32/128) had

The great intimidators.

After Disney's Michael Eisner, Miramax's Harvey Weinstein, and Hewlett-Packard's Carly Fiorina fell from their heights of power, the business media quickly proclaimed thatthe reign of abrasive, intimidating leaders was over. However, it's premature to proclaim their extinction. Many great intimidators have done fine for a long time and continue to thrive. Their modus operandi runs counter to a lot of preconceptions about what it takes to be a good leader. They're rough, loud, and in your face. Their tactics include invading others' personal space, staging tantrums, keeping people guessing, and

Femicide is a crime of power: learning a new vocabulary.

Femicide represents an unparalleled criminal phenomenon both in Italy and worldwide, characterized by tolerance and substantial impunity rooted in a culture shared even by institutions. With Law No. 181 of 2025, Italy stands among the few European countries to have included the crime of femicide into the penal code, clearly defining the discriminatory structure of a crime too often romanticized and reduced to a private matter. Article 577-bis punishes anyone who causes the death of a woman with life imprisonment when the crime is committed as an act of hatred, discrimination, abuse, control, p

Understanding power in food policy: a critical scoping review of methods to guide future research.

Power disparities in the food system are reflected in food policy processes and outcomes that are failing to address major food system challenges. As interest in investigating and addressing these power disparities grows, it is important to assess the research methods that have been used to examine power in food policy, and how methodological choices shape our understanding. This scoping review critically maps the methodological approaches applied in empirical studies of power in national-level food policy. A systematic search across fourteen databases identified 46 empirical studies published

"Lost Your Superpower"? Graphic Medicine, Voicelessness, and Georgia Webber's Dumb.

Unlike deafness and disability, speech-related disorders-voluntary/involuntary voicelessness, mutism, and their imperatives-have largely remained undertheorized both as scholarship and praxis. Given the primacy and over-privileging of vision, a consideration of the nature of voice/voicelessness is critical and urgent. Framed in metaphysical, metaphorical, and existential terms, Georgia Webber's graphic memoir Dumb (2018), which narrates the protagonist's temporary loss of voice, is perhaps the first graphic medical text that coheres around issues related to voice/voicelessness in its entirety.

Homeless identities: enacted and ascribed.

Homelessness has been a perennial concern for sociologists. It is a confronting phenomenon that can challenge western notions of home, a discrete family unit and the ascetics and order of public space. To be without a home and to reside in public places illustrates both an intriguing way of living and some fundamental inadequacies in the functioning of society. Much homelessness research has had the consequence of isolating the 'homeless person' as distinct category or indeed type of individual. They are ascribed with homeless identities. The homeless identity is not simply presented as one di

Failing to report details of an event: a review of the directed forgetting procedure and applications to reports of childhood sexual abuse.

Recent reviews of child sexual abuse (CSA) disclosure indicate that many victims delay disclosing abuse for some period of time (e.g., London, Bruck, Ceci, & Shuman, 2005). During this period of non-disclosure, CSA victims may avoid thinking about or discussing their abuse experiences. Some scholars argue that this may lead to a directed forgetting (DF) effect, whereby later recall of the unrehearsed memories becomes more difficult (e.g., M. A. Epstein & Bottoms, 2002). This paper reviews the DF literature and discusses the potential contribution of DF to silence. The review begins with a desc
