Pharmacological treatment of presbyopia may be an alternative for those who want a spectacle-free scenario and an easy-to-use method with lower risk of irreversible ocular adverse events. There are two main agents, miotics and lens softeners, investigated as agents for the pharmacological treatment. Miotic agents treat presbyopia by creating a pinhole effect which may increase the depth of focus at all working distances. The miotic agents have been studied for application to only one eye for monovision or both eyes. Their effect is temporary with common adverse events, such as headache and dim…

Presbyopia is the world's number one cause of vision loss with more than 1 billion individuals affected globally. The total global costs associated with correcting near vision impairment due to uncorrected presbyopia have been estimated at $30.8 billion for a comprehensive eye care model. Both cost to the patient and cost to society, which is greater in low-income countries relative to high-income areas, should be considered. Ultimately, surgical correction of the nonaccommodating dysfunctional natural lens may provide the "cure" for presbyopia. Presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) …

There are close to two billion individuals globally living with presbyopia. In spite of its ubiquitous and progressive nature, there is no widely accepted, formal guideline or consensus statement on the classification of presbyopia by degree of severity. A panel of leading eye care professionals representing both optometrists and ophthalmologists convened virtually to discuss and document their combined assessments from the body of literature and clinical practice expertise in this commentary. In light of emerging therapies, classifying presbyopia by mild, moderate, or advanced severity may he…

UNLABELLED: Presbyopia is the most common refractive disorder for people older than 40 years. It is characterized by a gradual and progressive decrease in accommodative amplitude. Many surgical procedures for the correction of presbyopia exist, with additional procedures on the horizon. This review describes the prevalent theories of presbyopia and discusses the available surgical options for correction.

Presbyopia is a physiologic inevitability that causes gradual loss of accommodation during the fifth decade of life. The correction of presbyopia and the restoration of accommodation are considered the final frontier of refractive surgery. Different approaches on the cornea, the crystalline lens and the sclera are being pursued to achieve surgical correction of this disability. There are however, a number of limitations and considerations that have prevented widespread acceptance of surgical correction for presbyopia. The quality of vision, optical and visual distortions, regression of effect,…

Presbyopia, the gradual loss of accommodation that becomes clinically significant during the fifth decade of life, is a physiologic inevitability. Different technologies are being pursued to achieve surgical correction of this disability; however, a number of limitations have prevented widespread acceptance of surgical presbyopia correction, such as optical and visual distortion, induced corneal ectasia, haze, anisometropy with monovision, regression of effect, decline in uncorrected distance vision, and the inherent risks with invasive techniques, limiting the development of an ideal solution…

Presbyopia is age-related reduction in amplitude of accommodation and the loss of the ability to change the eye's focus from far to near. It is the one of the most common age-related ailment. Traditional methods such as spectacle glasses or contact lenses are still the most widely used for correction of the problem. This article is an attempt to review the surgical options available for presbyopia.

There are a lot of surgical procedures to correct refractive errors, but the surgical correction of presbyopia is still a problem. In this paper the authors present surgical procedures, which can be used to correct presbyopia. There are three groups of surgery: the corneal, scleral and intrabulbar procedures.

The "dual, indirect, active" mechanisms of accommodation proposed by Helmholtz is reviewed. New supporting evidence shows that the insertion of the ciliary muscle is onto the span fibrils of the zonule in the interciliary process regions of the ciliary body. Thus, the peripheral zonule is the elastic antagonist of a unified ciliary muscle. A biomechanical model illustrating accommodation is put forward that makes consistent and explicit the force and length changes that the six mechanical component elements undergo. The Hess-Gullstrand lenticular theory of presbyopia is compatible with this mo…

Presbyopia, the age-dependent decline in accommodative amplitude, clinically afflicts every individual reaching the age of 40 to 45 years. Various pathophysiologic mechanisms have been proposed, but none is proven, and until now no animal model for their study has existed. Refraction, axial dimensions, and pharmacologically-induced accommodation were determined in caged rhesus monkeys aged 0.5 to 32 years. Accommodative amplitude decline in an age-dependent manner from greater than 40 diopters to 0 diopters. Mean accommodative amplitude in 0.5 to 5-year old animals was 34.4 diopters; in greate…

Of the 800 presbyopes studied, 286 (35.75%) entered presbyopia at or before the age of 38 years. About 63% of these patients lived in rural areas and 37% in urban areas. Environmental conditions including high average temperature, much ultraviolet radiation, chronic deficiency of essential amino acids, and exposure to toxic factors, particularly hair dye, may play a significant role in precipitating the early onset of presbyopia.
