Multimaterial additive manufacturing or three-dimensional (3D) printing of hydrogel structures provides the opportunity to engineer geometrically dependent functionalities. However, current fabrication methods are mostly limited to one type of material or only provide one type of functionality. In this paper, we report a novel method of multimaterial deposition of hydrogel structures based on an aspiration-on-demand protocol, in which the constitutive multimaterial segments of extruded filaments were first assembled in liquid state by sequential aspiration of inks into a glass capillary, follo

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Laparoscopic simulation has transformed skills acquisition for many procedures. However, realistic nonbiological simulators for complex reconstructive surgery are rare. Life-like tactile feedback is particularly difficult to reproduce. Technological innovations may contribute novel solutions to these shortages. We describe a hybrid model, harnessing 3D technology to simulate laparoscopic choledochal surgery for the first time.
METHODS: Digital hepatic anatomy images and standard laparoscopic trainer dimensions were employed to create an entry level laparoscopic choledochal

3D printers are a new technology that creates physical objects from digital files. Uses for these printers include printing models, parts, and toys. 3D printers are also being developed for medical applications, including printed bone, skin, and even complete organs. Although medical printing lags behind other uses for 3D printing, it has the potential to radically change the practice of medicine over the next decade. Falling costs for hardware have made 3D printers an inexpensive technology that libraries can offer their patrons. Medical librarians will want to be familiar with this technolog

An investigation was undertaken at a printing company into an apparently high prevalence of trace dipstick hematuria discovered during routine medical examinations. In both the printing employees (n = 225) and a control group (n = 118) from other industries, the prevalence of hematuria exceeded that described in most previous reports (31% and 25%, respectively, using the criterion of > 12 glomerular red cells or > 2 nonglomerular red cells/microliter of urine). No focus of abnormality was identified within the printing plant and no association was identified between reported exposure to potent

Background/Objectives: Magnetically responsive biomaterials have emerged as promising platforms for tissue engineering as they allow remote stimulation of cells and improved control over tissue regeneration. Although gelatin-alginate hydrogels incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles have been reported, the use of U-type hexaferrite particles, particularly Al3+-substituted compositions, remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to develop and characterize extrusion-based 3D-printed gelatin-alginate scaffolds containing U-type hexaferrite particles and to evaluate the influence of particle com

Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing is widely regarded as a highly sustainable additive manufacturing technique, prized for its rapid production capabilities and high resolution across diverse applications. Recent research has centered on optimizing curing surfaces and resin formulation to achieve continuous printing. Nevertheless, as printing continuity improves, issues such as excessive heat buildup from the exothermic curing process and constraints in printing volume persist or intensify. To address these challenges, we introduce a liquid-supplied one-droplet 3D printing approach, wh

Over 4.2 million people worldwide suffer from vision impairment related to corneal diseases, with the shortage of donor corneas limiting surgical interventions. The development of 3D printing provides a promising solution for corneal tissue engineering, offering precise control over dimensionality, structural organization, and cell-matrix interactions. The choice of biomaterials and printing strategies critically determines the properties of 3D-printed corneal constructs. While prior reviews have summarized general bioinks and techniques, few have addressed cornea-specific benchmarks such as t

PURPOSE: The aim was to develop a method for reproducible orbital volume (OV) measurement in vivo based on 3D printing.
METHODS: Twelve orbits were obtained from dry skulls of the Human Anatomy Department of Lille University. Computer tomography (CT) slice images of these orbits were transformed into stereo-lithography (STL) format and 3D-printed. Bone openings were closed using either putty and cellophane after printing (3D-Orb-1) or at the printing stage in silico using MeshMixer (3D-Orb-2). The results were compared with those of the conventional water-filling method as a control group (An

Mucin glycosylation is the key facilitator of microbial attachment and nutrition and it varies according to biological location, health and disease status, microbiome composition, infection, and multiple other factors. Mucin glycans have also been reported to attenuate pathogen virulence and mediate biofilm dispersal. With the labor intensive and time-consuming purification required for natural mucins and their low quantitative yield from biological sources, natural mucin microarrays provide a convenient and multiplexed platform to study mucin glycosylation and interactions. In this chapter we

The development of programmable functional biomaterials makes 4D printing add a new dimension, time (t), based on 3D structures (x, y, z), therefore, 4D printed constructs could transform their morphology or function over time in response to environmental stimuli. Nowadays, highly efficient bone defect repair remains challenging in clinics. Combining programmable biomaterials, living cells, and bioactive factors, 4D bioprinting provides greater potential for constructing dynamic, personalized, and precise bone tissue engineering scaffolds by complex structure formation and functional maturatio

Additive manufacturing technologies, including three-dimensional printing (3DP), have unlocked new possibilities for bone tissue engineering. Long-term regeneration of normal anatomic structure, shape, and function is clinically important subsequent to bone trauma, tumor, infection, nonunion after fracture, or congenital abnormality. Due to the great complexity in structure and properties of bone across the population, along with variation in the type of injury or defect, currently available treatments for larger bone defects that support load often fail in replicating the anatomic shape and s

The history of the medical book in the Renaissance is only just beginning: there still are enormous gaps in our knowledge. Some general points may be emphasised: doctors, surgeons and apothecaries were often literate; the culture of the doctor was founded at least as much upon the book as upon practical experience. Much is known about the history of the printing press: but in focusing on expensive, luxury books such as Vesalius' Fabrica we often leave out average products such as the many other anatomy books printed in the 16th century. The most significant feature of printing is perhaps the i

Light-driven additive manufacturing is a key technology that relies on the ability of photons to effectively initiate the curing of a photoresin. We have previously demonstrated via photochemical action plots that irradiating a chromophore at its maximum wavelength of absorption does not necessarily lead to a photochemical process with the highest efficiency. Today, action plots are considered a powerful methodology to access wavelength-resolved photochemical reactivity. However, there is currently no study that translates the knowledge gained from solution-based photopolymerization action plo

To develop easy-to-swallow foods for dysphagic individuals, this study prepared yeast protein (YP) and tapioca starch (TS) composite gel, and explored the effects of four hydrocolloids (HCs): flaxseed gum (FG), locust bean gum (LBG), xanthan gum (XG), and sodium alginate (SA) on their viscoelasticity, swallowing and 3D printing performances. All gels satisfied International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Level 6 criteria. HCs raised 3D printing accuracy from 80.53% to 95.85%, correlating with increased viscoelasticity in the order: FG > XG > LBG > SA. Molecular analysis show

OBJECTIVE: Although DLP-based 3D printing shows great potential for dental restorations, it is still limited by poor fracture toughness and excessive shrinkage of denture base resins. Herein, a novel dual-cured resin formulation was proposed to address these issues.
METHODS: The dual-cured liquid resins were prepared by blending photocurable acrylate (A) and thermally curable epoxy (E) resin at special ratios. Initially, the curing process was monitored, and the physical properties of the resin formulations were examined. Then, the mechanical properties were comprehensively investigated with
