Dentists' perceptions of problem behaviors in patients.

Our sample of 376 dentists in general practice provided a number of useful insights into the problems that dentists experience with their patients. For general problems of patient cooperation, the frequency of occurrence and annoyance to the dentist were related. High on the list in both categories were maintaining poor oral hygiene, missing or being late for appointments, and not paying bills. Not providing an accurate history ranked first in bother to the dentist but appears to occur infrequently. When specific chair problems were considered, an inverse relationship was found between frequen

Marital discord and childhood behavior problems.

Measures of overt marital hostility, general marital adjustment, and children's behavior problems were obtained from the parents of 64 children referred to a child psychological clinic. Correlations between children's scores on measures of general marital unhappiness and overt marital hostility were compared. Overt marital hostility correlated significantly with many behavior problems of boys. However, neither general marital unhappiness nor overt marital hostility related to problem behaviors in girls. Specific findings and possible reasons for the differential results with respect to boys an…

Managing the behavioral problems of dementia in the home.

The majority of persons with dementia are cared for in the home by family and friends. The goals of treatment in this setting are to maximize the quality of life of the demented person and minimize burdens on the caregiver. Behavioral problems are common with dementia and can lead to significant caregiver burden. Behaviors that are most common or most serious to caregivers include behaviors related to memory disturbances, restlessness and agitation, catastrophic reactions, day/night disturbances, delusions, wandering, and physical violence. A general method for clinicians to manage these probl

Behavioral problems of geriatric dogs and cats.

Dogs and cats that have been perfectly acceptable pets for many years may develop behavioral problems with old age. Most often these problems develop in animals that have never been very well behaved but have been tolerated by the owners until the problem has somehow exacerbated secondary to some other geriatric problem. The behavioral problems of old dogs most likely to be encountered by the practitioner are those of deaf dogs, dogs that house-soil because of renal, cardiovascular or gastrointestinal problems, and dogs that are aggressive because of a change in the number of animals or humans

The Behavior Problem Inventory: a further replication of its factor structure.

The Behavior Problem Inventory was administered to a random sample of people living in a state school. The scores from all items and from self-injury items only were factor analysed. The three scales of the Behavior Problem Inventory were highly internally consistent. Factor analysis of all the items showed some similarities to previous studies, and factor analysis of the self-injury items showed a very close correspondence to two previous studies. The results are discussed in terms of the design of this instrument, the possible multi-factorial nature of self-injury and future research on the

Trusting problem gamblers: reliability and validity of self-reported gambling behavior.

The retest reliability and validity of self-reported gambling behavior were assessed in 2 samples of problem gamblers. Days gambled and money spent gambling over a 6-month timeframe were reliable over a 2- to 3-week retest period using the timeline follow-back interview procedure (N=35; intraclass correlation coefficients [ICCs] ranged from .61 to .98). Gamblers did, however, report significantly more gambling at the 2nd interview. Agreement with collaterals was fair to good overall (ICCs ranged from.46 to.65) with no clear pattern of either over- or underreporting by gamblers. Spouses did not

Convergence between statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and child psychiatric diagnoses.

The relations between scores on statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and DSM-III diagnoses were examined for 270 clinically referred children aged 6 through 16. Each child's parent completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and was administered the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC)--a structured interview covering DSM-III diagnostic criteria. Numerous behavior problems scales scored from the CBCL were significantly related to one or more diagnoses. The strongest relations were between scores on the Hyperactive, Delinquent, and Depressed scales and diagnoses

A large sample of 2-12 year old children (N = 2311) was studied to determine the relationship between three sexually intrusive behavior items (SIBs) measured by the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI) and a range of developmental, ecological, and behavioral correlates. The variables studied included age, gender, race, family income, single parent status, maternal education, family sexual behaviors, physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, social competence of the child, and three scales from the CBCL (Internalizing, Externalizing, and PTSD). Sexual abuse was not the primary predicto

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Exuberant and inhibited toddlers: stability of temperament and risk for problem behavior.

Temperament, effortful control, and problem behaviors at 4.5 years were assessed in 72 children classified as exuberant, inhibited, and low reactive as 2-year-olds. Exuberant toddlers were more positive, socially responsive to novel persons, less shy, and rated as having more problem behaviors, including externalizing and internalizing behaviors, than other children as preschoolers. Two forms of effortful control, the ability to delay a response and the ability to produce a subdominant response, were associated with fewer externalizing behaviors, whereas expressing more negative affect (relati…

Precis of executive dyscontrol as a cause of problem behavior in dementia.

Frontal lobe executive control functions (ECF) are proposed as a source of problem behavior in dementia. The behavior and personality changes that follow frontal lobe brain damage overlap with those seen in dementia, and frontal lobe structural and metabolic lesions can be demonstrated across a variety of dementing illnesses. ECF help explain the importance of social and environmental cues in the production of disruptive behavior and suggest interpersonal strategies for their control. This model has considerable face validity and leads to several testable hypotheses.

Association between P3 event-related brain potential amplitude and adolescent problem behavior.

This study examined P3 event-related brain potential amplitude and the age of onset of adolescent problem behaviors associated with the development of externalizing psychopathology. Five hundred and one male and 627 female 17-year-old twins reported whether and when they had initiated tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drug use, had police contact, or had sexual intercourse. P3 amplitude was recorded using a visual oddball task. Each of these behaviors was associated with reduced P3 amplitude. When these five behaviors were used to create a composite early problem behavior scale reflecting onset pri…

School-aged children with sexual behavior problems: Untangling the relationship between externalizing behavior problems and non-sexual victimization on the variety and severity of sexual behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Sexual behavior problems (SBP) in school-aged children is a social concern that draws increased attention amongst child protection services and practitioners. Past research that highlighted the variety in profiles and in behavioral manifestations of children with SBP emphasizes the importance of a well-informed and sensitive approach for appropriate intervention. However, studies validating the theoretically hypothesized vulnerability of children with SBP remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to further our understanding of the risk factors that influence the variety and sev

Genetic and environmental influences on the associations between attention problems and other problem behaviors.

Problem behavior in children shows a high degree of co-occurrence, both within the domains of internalizing and externalizing behaviors and across domains. Maternal ratings of 207 same- and opposite-sex twin pairs on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/4-18; Achenbach, 1991) were used to determine the etiology of these associations. In the current sample of 4- to 11-year-old children (mean age: 7.6 years) phenotypic correlations were .68 between Internalizing and Externalizing, between .41 and .66 within the internalizing scales, and between .58 and .71 within the externalizing scales. Maternal dietary patterns and offspring behavioral problems.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems often begin in early childhood and could predict psychiatric and behavioral outcomes. Prenatal factors such as maternal nutrition have an impact on neurodevelopment. This study aims to investigate the association between maternal dietary patterns and emotional and behavioral problems in 4-year-old children. METHODS: Within a cohort of 205 mother-child pairs, three maternal dietary patterns were identified: 'Sweet and Superfluous', 'Fish and Vegetables' and 'Meat and Cereals'. Child behavior was evaluated by means of the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 (CBCL 1

Sleep problems and suicidal behaviors in college students.

Using a large sample of college students, objectives were to examine (1) the overlap between poor sleep and suicide risk status, (2) whether poor sleep was associated with suicide behaviors above and beyond depression, (3) whether sleep problems and depression interacted to predict increased suicidal behaviors or risk, and (4) which specific components of sleep were uniquely associated with suicidal behaviors. Participants were 1700 college students (ages 18-29 years; 65% female) from two universities who completed measures assessing sleep, depressive symptoms, and suicidal behaviors (Suicidal
