Ocular trauma can be caused by road traffic accidents, falls, assaults, or work-related accidents. Enucleation is often indicated after ocular injury or for the treatment of intraocular tumors, severe ocular infections, and painful blind eyes. Rehabilitation of an enucleated socket without an intraocular implant or with an inappropriately sized implant can result in superior sulcus deepening, enophthalmos, ptosis, ectropion, and lower lid laxity, which are collectively known as post-enucleation socket syndrome. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of post-enucleation socket syndro

What is new and what comes next in artificial hip joints? These are the crucial questions we attempt to answer after accurately surveying the state of the art in the field of hip arthroplasty, especially related to non-metallic materials. Summarizing the present situation, one could safely state that the current generation of hard-on-soft and hard-on-hard hip bearings has become quite effective in exhibiting extremely low degrees of wear when compared to traditional implants made of cobalt-chromium alloys coupled with conventional polyethylene materials or to the primitive alumina materials us

INTRODUCTION: The choice of heterologous materials for cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy is still difficult. The aim of this study is to examine the association between material of choice and related complications to suggest the best treatment option.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review was performed for articles reporting cranioplasty comparing the following heterologous implants: titanium, poli-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA), polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and hydroxyapatite (HA). Extracted data included implant materials and incidence of the most frequent complications.

The present minireview aims to provide a context for imagination of the timespan for bone infection evolution from the origin of cellular bone tissue to modern orthopedic surgery. From a phylogenetic osteomyelitis-bracketing perspective, and due to the time of osteocyte origin, bacteria might have been able to infect the skeleton for approximately 400 million years. Thereby, bone infections happened simultaneously with central expansions of the immune system and development of terrestrial bone structure. This co-evolution might aid in explaining the many immune evasion strategies seen in the f

BACKGROUND: The current generation of prosthetic heart valves are excellent examples of engineering that work well, for long periods of time. Unfortunately, host-related problems and consequent valve failure continue to occur, including infective endocarditis. St Jude Medical Inc introduced a new model of mechanical heart valve prosthesis with silver-treated fabric to try to reduce the incidence of infective endocarditis. Two cases of failure of this prosthesis, with a clinical diagnosis of infective endocarditis, are presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the 176 St Jude Medical Silzone-coated

There are many conditions that may be responsible of a painful knee prosthesis. The possible causes are not always easily diagnosed. Common causes of prosthetic failure, such as aseptic loosening, infection, instability, progressive patellar arthropathy and recurrent synovitis are associated with clearly defined radiographic and/or clinical evidence. Prosthetic infection should always be considered first until any other cause has been demonstrated. In the presence of an infected prosthesis we carry out a two-step revision. Aseptic loosening needs implant revision more often with increasing pro

Staphylococcus caprae has been recently classified as a human pathogen, but the incidence of S. caprae in human bone and joint infections (BJIs) is under-reported. In this study, we report 25 cases of S. caprae BJI, and we review the 31 cases published in the literature. Molecular techniques and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry improved the identification of clinically relevant S. caprae strains. In this study, 96% of S. caprae BJIs were localized to the lower limbs, and 88% of the cases involved orthopaedic device infections. S. caprae joint prosthe

OBJECTIVE: To study the long-term outcomes and complications of giant cell tumors around the knee treated with en bloc resection and reconstruction with prosthesis.
METHODS: From January 1991 to March 2005, 19 patients (11 men, 8 women, average age 35.4 years) were treated in our hospital with en bloc resection and reconstruction with domestic prosthesis (15 hinge knee and 4 rotating-hinge knee). The distal femur was involved in 12 and the proximal tibia in 7 cases. Nine tumors were primary and 10 recurrent. All cases were Campanacci grade III. The affected limb functions were evaluated by th

Between 1999 and 2011 the Endo-Exo femur prosthesis has been applied to 54 patients. This comparatively new method for patient rehabilitation after upper leg amputation includes a two-step surgical procedure. The first step is an operation where the endomodule of the stem prosthesis is implanted in the bone via a press-fit technique. Then the soft tissue coat is closed to give the bone enough time for a secure osseointegration of the prosthesis. About six weeks later a stoma is cut out and the adapter for the exo-part is connected. The prosthesis is therefore intramedullary anchored and percut

Reinforcement cages are widely used for the treatment of large acetabular bone defects. We report the case of a loosened Burch-Schneider reinforcement ring causing a recurrent macrohaematuria due to a perforation of the urinary bladder. After performing several diagnostic procedures, the patient underwent interdisciplinary revision surgery. Due to the severe destruction of the acetabular bone stock and an infection of the total hip prosthesis as confirmed by fresh frozen section, the hip prosthesis was explanted. At the last follow-up the patient was free of infect-related symptoms and was abl

BACKGROUND: Revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a burden to patients and the health care system. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify the most likely causes for requiring a revision of TKA over the last 14 years METHODS: A comprehensive search of multiple electronic databases was performed for all articles pertaining to this topic from 2010 to 2024. A total of 16 studies were included in this review.
RESULTS: Our final cohort consisted of 1,383,181 revision arthroplasties. Approximately 31% of revisions had unspecified etiology. The most common documented etiologies for

For over 40 years, the metal-on-polyethylene bearing has dominated the field of total hip replacement. Problems of wear, osteolysis (dissolution of bone), and ultimately failure of prostheses have led to the development of alternative bearing surfaces. Metal-on-metal hip resurfacing has taken current orthopaedic surgery almost by storm. However, metal ion release following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing remains a major cause for concern. This article looks into the development and examines problems and issues surrounding metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty.

The extrusion of a penile prosthesis is an indicator of infection and implies its removal, causing fibrosis and shortening of the penis. We present a 62-year-old man, to whom we implanted a hydraulic prosthesis, and three weeks later we underwent salvage surgery by extrusion of the activation pump. After removing the prosthesis, we wash the cavities with four dilutions. The 1st to 50% of hydrogen peroxide; the 2nd to 50% of povidone iodine; the 3rd with 1 g of cefazolin and 40 mg of tobramycin, the 4th with 80 mg of gentamicin and 500 mg of vancomycin. In the act we implanted a malleable prost

INTRODUCTION: Infection of a penile prosthesis requires that all device hardware and associated foreign materials are removed, irrespective of whether a salvage procedure will be performed. Failure to remove all foreign bodies from the operative field may result in persistent infection, necessitating surgical intervention.
AIM: To review our experience with complications arising from retained foreign bodies following removal of an infected penile prosthesis. We highlight the clinical features that should raise suspicion of retained device-associated materials, and also the role of imaging in

BACKGROUND: Hip disarticulation and external hemipelvectomy are radical lower-extremity amputations typically reserved for oncologic, traumatic, or severe infectious indications. Outcome estimates for refractory infectious cases remain sparse, and prior reports mix case reports, small series, and administrative databases with inconsistent mortality windows and limited functional follow-up.
METHODS: This systematic review was reported in accordance with PRISMA 2020 and prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261277037). PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched fro
