The authors analyzed the causes of death in patients with chronic alcoholism over the period of three years. The findings obtained show that the most frequent causes of mortality include injuries and accidents, suicides and acute alcohol intoxication. It was revealed that with the increasing duration of alcoholism there was a decrease in the proportion of the mortality rate from the mentioned factors whereas the mortality incidence secondary to somatic disease increased. In patients who had suffered alcoholic psychoses, the suicide-associated mortality occurred two times more frequently which

Calcium and inorganic phosphate were measured in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 11 patients during impending delirium tremens (grade 2) and in nine patients with fully developed delirium tremens (grade 3). The initial sampling of blood and CSF was performed at admission before treatment was initiated. The blood sampling was repeated daily until recovery and at this time a second lumbar puncture was also performed. In grade 3 patients the plasma calcium concentration showed a transient increase after admission; in grade 2 patients the plasma calcium concentration was also somewhat eleva

A meta-analysis of 13 psychiatric epidemiological studies consisting of 33572 persons in 6550 families yielded an estimate prevalence rate of 58.2 per thousand population. Organic psychosis (prevalence rate 0.4), schizophrenia (2.7), affective disorders (12.3) contributed a rate of 15.4 for psychoses. The prevalence rate for mental retardation (6.9), epilepsy (4.4), neurotic disorders (20.7), alcohol/drug addiction (6.9; and miscellaneous group (3.9) were estimated. Higher prevalence for urban sector, females, age group of 35-44, married/widowers/divorced, lower socioeconomic status, and nucle

This paper outlines the evolution of ideas on the topic of alcoholic hallucinosis. From 1847 to 1987 numerous descriptive case-histories appeared in the literature. Analysis of these demonstrates that there were some phenomenological features of the illness about which authors were agreed. These were the acute onset of the illness, the predominance of auditory hallucinations and a history of heavy drinking. Protagonists of the delirium tremens school of though drew attention to the slight clouding of consciousness, the presence of the physical symptoms which may accompany an acute confusional

It has long been appreciated that the chronic abuse of alcohol may lead to a deterioration of intellect, personality, and behavior. Some of the ways in which this comes about are reasonably well established. The dementing diseases of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, pellagra, the nonfamilial form of hepatocerebral degeneration, Marchiafava-Bignami disease, and alcoholic dementia and their relationships to chronic alcoholism are discussed in this article.

Folate deficiency is a common occurrence in psychiatric disorders, whether organic or functional, particularly in depressive illness. We have shown that folate deficiency is a common association of depressive symptoms in a variety of settings including primary endogenous or non-endogenous depression, and in alcoholic, lithium-treated and anorexic patients. Possible pathogenetic mediating mechanisms for this association are methylation and hydroxylation and the implications for nutritional hypotheses of the psychoses are discussed. We suggest that folate deficiency, with or without deficiencies

In a prospective study involving 161 patients discharged from inpatient psychiatric treatment, outcome data were obtained for 93 percent of the patients 1 year after clinic discharge. Sixty-seven percent of the patients were directly interviewed for the followup examination. Outcome data for symptomatology, relapses, employment, and social contacts did not differ significantly for patients with schizophrenic psychoses as compared to those with affective psychoses, neuroses, and other psychiatric diagnoses (predominantly alcohol dependency). A discrepancy between self-ratings and observer-ratin

At least four distinct cerebral diseases--Wernicke-Korsakoff, Marchiafava-Bignami, pellagrous encephalopathy, and acquired hepatocerebral degeneration--have a close association with chronic alcoholism. Each is characterized by a distinctive pathologic change and a reasonably well-established pathogenesis; in each the role of alcohol in the causation is secondary. The question posed in this review is whether there is, in addition to the established types of dementia associated with alcoholism, a persistent dementia attributable to the direct toxic effects of alcohol on the brain--i.e., a primar
