We investigated self-image, psychological functioning, and quality of life in children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Thirty-nine children with JIA were compared with 80 healthy peers. We first administered the Human Figure Drawing Test (HFDT) to all subjects; children also completed standardized questionnaires evaluating health-related quality of life (PEDSQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales) and the main aspects of psychological functioning: anxiety (SAFA-A) and depression (CDI). Parents were asked to complete the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and the PEDSQL 4.0. For eac

Our aims were to compare the psychosocial functioning of a sample of adults with beta-thalassaemia major to that of a control sample and to examine the protective role of quality of relationship with parents during adolescence and perceived quality of care. A total of 85 Italian beta-thalassaemia major participants and 73 controls completed an ad hoc questionnaire. Compared with controls, beta-thalassaemia major participants did not differ on relationships with significant others and coping strategies. Beta-thalassaemia major participants reported higher scores on job satisfaction, self-esteem

A linear regression analysis was conducted in order to examine the effect of duration of untreated illness, number of previous hospitalisations, history of psychotic episodes and age at illness onset on patients' functioning, as assessed with the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale.
RESULTS: Number of previous psychotic episodes as well as duration of untreated illness were the str

OBJECTIVE: Up to 90% of child welfare system cases involve multiple types of maltreatment; however, studies have rarely incorporated multiple dimensions of maltreatment. The present study employed a latent profile analysis to identify naturally occurring subgroups of children who had experienced maltreatment.
METHODS: Reports of maltreatment incidents for 117 preschool-aged foster children were classified along two dimensions: type (e.g., physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, supervisory neglect, or emotional maltreatment) and severity within type.
RESULTS: The analyses revealed fo

OBJECTIVE: To compare psychosocial functioning (PF) in a prepubertal and early adolescent bipolar disorder phenotype (PEA-BP) sample to two comparison groups, i.e., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and community controls (CC).
METHOD: There were 93 PEA-BP (with or without comorbid ADHD), 81 ADHD, and 94 CC subjects who were participants in an ongoing study, the Phenomenology and Course of Pediatric Bipolar Disorders. Cases in the PEA-BP and ADHD groups were outpatients obtained by consecutive new case ascertainment, and CC subjects were from a survey conducted by the Research T

All surviving patients receiving a BMT at our center since 1976 were surveyed. Among 163 eligible patients, 145 were contacted and 117 (81%) responded. Their median follow-up was 55 months (range 6-154). The research instruments consisted of a demographic questionnaire, a current medical status form, a quality of life questionnaire (Nottingham Health Profile), and a screening instrument for psychiatric morbidity (the 28-item version of the General Health Questionnaire). Current functioning varied considerably across patients. They reported a high use of medical services (37%) and varied ongoin

Five hundred children from ages 6 to 12 who had been referred for neuropsychological assessment were clustered into six subtypes using a k-means technique applied to 10 PIC scales. Five of the six subtypes were virtually identical to subtypes identified in previous research (viz., normal, somatic concern, mild anxiety, externalized psychopathology, and internalized psychopathology). A sixth subtype (conduct disorder) was also found. Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) Reading and Spelling scores discriminated between normal, somatic concern, and conduct disorder subtypes on the one hand vs. the

Twenty-two subjects with Marfan syndrome (age range 11-24 years, mean 15.7 years) were studied to evaluate the impact of Marfan syndrome on their lives, level of psychosocial adaptation, concerns about their disorder, compliance with medical regimens, and knowledge of Marfan syndrome. Subjects were interviewed and then completed the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire and two questionnaires designed for the study. Parents also were interviewed. Subjects demonstrated normal psychosocial adaptation on the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire. Nevertheless, the subjects perceived that their lives would be s

OBJECTIVE: Although rural residence has been related to health disparities in cancer patients, little is known about how rural residence impacts mental health and quality of life (QOL) in ovarian cancer patients over time. This prospective longitudinal study investigated mental health and QOL of ovarian cancer patients in the first-year post-diagnosis.
METHOD: Women with suspected ovarian cancer completed psychosocial surveys pre-surgery, at 6 months and one-year; clinical data were obtained from medical records. Histologically confirmed high grade epithelial ovarian cancer patients were elig

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have examined domain-specific psychosocial functioning in Bipolar Disorder (BD) youths. Parenting in the context of poverty is accompanied by heightened stress and heightened stakes. How parents respond to poverty-related stress has important implications for family functioning, but research investigating individual differences in low-income mothers' and fathers' responses to financial stress and their associations with parents' concurrent psychosocial adaptation is lacking. A better understanding of differences in stress responses among low-income parents is required to develop and tailor prevention programs that meet these families' needs. This study applies latent profile anal

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum are the most commonly seen anterior chest wall deformities. Recent studies reveal that minimal invasive repair of pectus deformities improves the quality of life. Our aim is to assess the psychosocial functioning and sociodemographic characteristics of pediatric patients with pectus deformities and evaluate the differences between patients operated on with minimal invasive repair techniques and nonoperated patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients with pectus deformities who were operated on 6 months or more before and 31 nonope
