This is a retrospective study of 500 eyes of 400 patients with pterygium seen over a 3 year period to determine the clinical presentations and outcome of surgery. The study showed that it was a fairly common eye condition in the south western part of Nigeria. It formed 9% of all new cases seen in the eye clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan and 20% of all planned ocular surgery in the same hospital. 70% of patients studied came to hospital because of the growth in their eyes. 80% of the pterygia were large, fleshy type in the nasal position. 65% of patients were outdoor workers. Pterygium is a condition prevalent in the South of this country, in Kirghizia as well as in other regions. The disease is characterized by frequent stubborn recurrences after various types of surgical interventions. A surgical technique that would rule out the disease recurrences is still to be developed. Pterygium is thought to be hyperaemia of fibrovascular tissue on to the cornea caused by ultraviolet radiation of sunlight. We observed a significantly high incidence of pterygia in welders who were exposed occupationally to excess ultraviolet radiation and found a close relationship between the incidence and the length of employment as a welder (r = 0.975, p less than 0.05). This study attempts to clarify the causative relationship between ultraviolet radiation and pterygia.
