PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors associated with work-related musculoskeletal injuries among radiation therapists in the United States.
METHODS: Approximately 16 000 radiation therapists were identified and electronically mailed a modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. For inclusion in the analysis, participants were required to be actively employed during the preceding 12-month period and hold a current position as a radiation therapist. Descriptive statistics, univariate and multivariate analyses, and text analysis were performed to assess personal and work-re

The models of local radiation injuries of skin--radiation ulcer, radiation epidermitis, radiation dermatitis in guinea-pigs and rabbits are developed. Experimental reproduction local radiation injuries by different doses, regimes and spices of ionizing irradiation was carried out. Detailed description of radiation action on skin is given. Pathomorphologic characteristic of radiation ulcers is given. Models may be used for pathogenesis learning and experimental therapy of local skin radiation injures.

In the patient who has received high dose irradiation of the pelvis and abdomen, all abdominopelvic operations should be avoided, unless it is absolutely essential. Persisting obstruction, hemorrhage, intestinal perforation with peritonitis and with abscess and fistula formation are valid indications for surgical intervention. Ninety-three patients have been operated upon for these complications after irradiation. Some anastomotic dehiscence occurred in ten patients. Six operative deaths occurred. Of the 93 patients, 65 were managed by means of complete resection of the involved segment of int

A review of forty cases of radiation-induced gastrointestinal injuries is presented. Based on this experience and reports in the literature, preoperative management and operative technics are discussed. The increased risk of radiation bowel injury is recognized in patients who have had previous operations. Preradiation contrast studies are advised to identify trapped loops of intestine in the pelvis. Small bowel resection is recommended with localized segments of disease. Bypass operations are preferable to avoid any extensive dissections. Bypass operations have anastomotic dehiscence rates si

Various factors can lead to esophageal mucosal injury. A thorough patient history is crucial to accurately diagnose esophageal injuries caused by drugs, radiation, and caustic agents. These conditions are often identifiable based on characteristic clinical features, concomitant diseases, and endoscopic findings and do not necessarily require histological confirmation through biopsies. Regardless of the underlying cause, avoiding or minimizing the offending agent is essential for preventing further mucosal damage. In cases where this is unavoidable, such as radiationinduced esophageal injuries,

This article addresses theoretical and clinical aspects of radiation-induced intestinal injuries, which complicate radiation therapy for malignant neoplasms of the abdominal and pelvic organs. Many clinical aspects of this issue remain unknown due to the lack of awareness among doctors and patients. Further study of radiation-induced intestinal injuries and the development of personalized approaches to their prevention and treatment represent a relevant direction in internal medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Although all areas of the body are susceptible to radiation injury, different tissues have varying tolerances for radiation exposure. The goal of this summary is to introduce basic concepts of radiation biology and discuss the effects of radiation on various tissues.
METHODS: Reference texts and literature were reviewed to summarize key points in radiation biology and the direct and indirect cell damage caused by radiation.
RESULTS: The most prevalent factor for injury is long exposure time, which can be an issue in lengthy peripheral vascular or aortic interventions. Several k

Apoptosis is a necessary form of cell death for all multicellular organisms and is controlled by the action of genes that initiate, facilitate or inhibit the process. In addition to physiological triggers, apoptosis can follow cellular injury, such as exposure to ionizing radiation. Cell death following radiation serves as a means by which the possibility of cells surviving with potentially harmful genomic damage can be reduced. Apoptosis can be identified in tissues shortly after whole body radiation; but apoptotic cells are rapidly cleared by phagocytosis, and apoptosis is unlikely to serve

The use of radiation therapy is limited by the occurrence of the potentially fatal clinical syndromes of radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis. Radiation pneumonitis usually becomes clinically apparent from 2 to 6 months after completion of radiation therapy. It is characterized by fever, cough, dyspnea, and alveolar infiltrates on chest roentgenogram and may be difficult to differentiate from infection or recurrent malignancy. The pathogenesis is uncertain, but appears to involve both direct lung tissue toxicity and an inflammatory response. The syndrome may resolve spontaneously or may progress

Osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone is an unusual sequela of radiation therapy to the head and neck. Symptoms occur many years after the radiation is administered, and progression of the disease is insidious. Hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, or mixed), otalgia, otorrhea, and even gross tissue extrusion herald this condition. Later, intracranial complications such as meningitis, temporal lobe or cerebellar abscess, and cranial neuropathies may occur. Reported here are five cases of this rare malady representing varying degrees of the disease process. They include a case of radiation

Radiation therapy is administered to approximately one third of patients with cancer as part of their treatment plan. Radiation-induced bowel injury is a major cause of morbidity in these patients. The pathophysiology of this condition as well as recommendations for the management of acute and chronic radiation enteritis are discussed. In general, except for patients presenting with signs of an acute abdomen, conservative management yields the best clinical results.

The literature dealing with radiation myelopathy is reviewed. The following points are to be noticed:radiation myelopathy is a rare complication in the radiation therapy of extraspinal tumors, nevertheless the number of case reports is increasing during the last years; probably this is due to the increasing use of high energy therapy. Already a cord dose of 1000 rad may be dangerous; with an increasing dose the risk of radiation myelopathy is increasing too. Besides the total dose the incidence of radiation myelopathy depends on the rate of delivery, the over-all time of administration, the si
