Non-invasive radiation-free monitoring of regional lung ventilation in critically ill infants.

OBJECTIVE: Established techniques used to examine lung function in critically ill infants cannot continuously follow regional aspects of lung ventilation although this information would be beneficial for proper therapy planning. We have studied the applicability and clinical relevance of a relatively new non-invasive radiation-free imaging method, electrical impedance tomography (EIT), in monitoring regional lung function in paediatric intensive care patients. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) at a university hospital. PATIENTS: Eight infa

Monitoring human populations for effects of radiation and chemical exposures using cytogenetic techniques.

Exposure to hazardous agents in our environment can cause a variety of health effects. Some of them are expressed immediately and others take years to develop. The latter type of abnormalities are of major concern, because due to the late expression of health problems, many people would have been affected before the exposure problem can be identified and brought under control. In this article the usefulness of cytogenetic assays in monitoring human populations for the effects from exposure to radiation and chemicals is briefly reviewed. The existence of confounding variables and unusual biolog

Application of a low-cost Geiger-Müller monitoring system for clinical radiation environments.

BACKGROUND: Low-cost Geiger-Müller detectors may support clinical radiation monitoring, but their response varies with radiation type and measurement conditions. PURPOSE: To evaluate an Arduino-based Geiger-Müller monitoring system in representative clinical radiation environments and determine whether condition-specific calibration reduces disagreement with a reference survey meter. METHODS: The system was compared with a reference energy-compensated Geiger-Müller survey meter (Ludlum Model 3005) under computed tomography scatter, Ir-192 brachytherapy, and 6 MV linear accelerator maze condi…

Online model checking for monitoring surrogate-based respiratory motion tracking in radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Correlation between internal and external motion is critical for respiratory motion compensation in radiosurgery. Artifacts like coughing, sneezing or yawning or changes in the breathing pattern can lead to misalignment between beam and tumor and need to be detected to interrupt the treatment. We propose online model checking (OMC), a model-based verification approach from the field of formal methods, to verify that the breathing motion is regular and the correlation holds. We demonstrate that OMC may be more suitable for artifact detection than the prediction error. MATERIALS AND

Optimizing the radiation monitoring network to support emergency operational levels and sampling in Greece.

The environmental radiation monitoring network of Greece currently comprises 23 operational stations. It provides routine measurements of ambient radiation background and serves as an early notification system, as well as a decision-making tool in the event of an emergency. Despite its functionality, the number of existing stations poses constraints in decision-making due to incomplete coverage of all geographical regions in Greece. This limitation was addressed through simulations of transboundary accidental release scenarios, originating from nearby nuclear power plants, conducted using HYSP…

X-ray radiation monitor for measuring solids content in fluid fine tailings.

The extraction of bitumen from oil sands produces fluid fine tailings (FFT) consisting mainly of water, sands, clay, and residual bitumen. Generally, devices with radioactive sources are used to measure the variation of FFT density or solids concentration inline, but to date there is no suitable device for in situ monitoring in tailings storage facilities such as large tailings ponds. In this study, an alternative method using high-resolution spectrometry based on a low radiation intensity source and a cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector was used to measure the solids content in tailings samples

Calibration of Radiation Portal Monitors for Characterization of Historic Low-level Radioactive Waste.

Radiation portal monitors are large-volume radiation detectors typically positioned along roadways, railways, and pedestrian portals. They are typically used for the detection of radioactive material where no such material is expected. Applications include monitoring vehicles and personnel exiting nuclear facilities, at the entrance to steel and scrap metal facilities, and at international borders. As part of the Port Hope Area Initiative, the Port Granby Project involves the relocation of approximately 450,000 m of historic low-level radioactive waste, located at an existing site on the shore

Mortality among workers monitored for radiation exposure at the French nuclear fuel company.

A cohort of 9,285 nuclear workers employed at the French company AREVA NC specializing in the nuclear fuel cycle was established. Vital status, causes of death, employment characteristics and annual exposure to ionizing radiation were reconstructed for each individual over the time period 1977-2004. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were computed using national mortality rates as an external reference. Tests for trends in mortality with duration of employment and cumulative external dose were performed. The all-cause and all-cancer mortality was significantly lower than expected from the Fr

Monitoring temperature and light exposure of biosamples exposed to ultraviolet and low energy radiation.

We previously showed that T-lymphocytes produce catalytic amounts of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in a membrane-associated process when irradiated with narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) light. This form of phototherapy is thought to be highly effective for treatment of inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis, but also includes the potential for severe burning and development of skin cancer. Consequently, information on the therapeutic mechanism of narrowband UVB phototherapy and its regulation is warranted. Our laboratory is researching the mechanistic involvement of T-cell H2O2 production and i

Exploring radiation-free scoliosis monitoring: systematic review and meta-analysis of non-ionizing methods.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity that typically develops during childhood or adolescence but may affect individuals across the lifespan. Regular monitoring is often necessary to detect progression and assess treatment effectiveness. Radiography remains the clinical gold standard; however, repeated ionizing radiation exposure is associated with increased cancer risks, highlighting the need for reliable, non-invasive, and radiation-free assessment methods. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy and criterion validity of

Technical note: Noninvasive monitoring of normal tissue radiation damage using spectral quantitative ultrasound spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: While radiation therapy (RT) is a critical component of breast cancer therapy and is known to decrease overall local recurrence rates, recent studies have shown that normal tissue radiation damage may increase recurrence risk. Fibrosis is a well-known consequence of RT, but the specific sequence of molecular and mechanical changes induced by RT remains poorly understood. PURPOSE: To improve cancer therapy outcomes, there is a need to understand the role of the irradiated tissue microenvironment in tumor recurrence. This study seeks to evaluate the use of spectral quantitative ultr

Reduction of radiation exposure in scoliosis monitoring using flat detector and pulsed fluoroscopy technology.

A new flat detector and pulsed fluoroscopy technology is available to further reduce radiation exposure in radiological monitoring during scoliosis treatment in children and adolescents. The aim of this study is to compare different settings of the system (opening area(OA) and image quality settings (IQS)) in order to find the optimal parameters with high image quality and the lowest possible radiation exposure. Therefore, we examined four cadaver spines (T1 to sacrum) with the flat detector technique using digital pulsed fluoroscopy and simulated the abdominal soft tissues. The images were me

Biological monitoring of non-thermal effects of mobile phone radiation: recent approaches and challenges.

This review describes recent developments in analysing the influence of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs ) on biological systems by monitoring the cellular stress response as well as overall gene expression. Recent data on the initiation and modulation of the classical cellular stress response by RF-EMFs, comprising expression of heat shock proteins and stimulation of stress-activated protein kinases, are summarised and evaluated. Since isothermic RF-EMF exposure is assumed rather than proven there are clear limitations in using the stress response to describe non-thermal effect

Radiation leukoencephalopathy associated with moderate hydrocephalus: intracranial pressure monitoring and results of ventriculoperitoneal shunting.

Delayed neurological sequelae of radiotherapy have several manifestations; leukoencephalopathy is one of the most common. Pathogenetic relationships between radiation leukoencephalopathy and other findings of diffuse radiation injury (brain atrophy and progressive ventriculomegaly) are not well defined. Moreover, no guidelines have been established for the treatment of hydrocephalus when associated with radiation leukoencephalopathy. Our study reports intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in two patients with radiation leukoencephalopathy with moderate hydrocephalus. High intraventricular mea

Geometrical analysis for motion monitoring of rigid bodies with optical surface scanning in radiation oncology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Surface guided radiotherapy can be used to improve patient setup and for accurate intra-fraction motion monitoring in correspondence to the isocenter. For a clinical relevant motion analysis the actual displacement of the entire clinical target volume (CTV) is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a novel assessment method for intra-fraction motion for rigid body structures based on motion data and a geometrical analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A threshold value on the volume coverage (VC(t)) of the CTV by the planning target volume (PTV) was propo
