OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess and compare the immunoexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in periapical granulomas (PGs), radicular cysts (RCs), and residual radicular cysts (RRCs), relating it to the angiogenic index and the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty PGs, 20 RCs, and 10 RRCs were evaluated by immunohistochemistry using anti-VEGF antibody. Angiogenic index was determined by microvessel count (MVC) using anti-von Willebrand factor antibody.
RESULTS: The PGs and RCs showed higher expression of VEGF than the RRCs. Lesions presenting few …

This report describes a case of orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst arising in the mandibular molar region of a 39-year-old man. Under the initial clinical diagnosis of radicular cyst, root canal treatment was performed on the mandibular right second molar. The treatment that continued for six months did not achieve healing. Subsequently surgical intervention was selected since the tooth fracture was found, and the prognosis was judged to be poor. After atraumatic tooth extraction, the apical cystic lesion was enucleated, and the tooth was replanted. A definite diagnosis of orthokeratinized odon…

INTRODUCTION: Galectins play important roles in immunoinflammatory responses, but their participation in the development of periapical lesions remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the expressions of galectins-1, -3, and -7 in periapical lesions, correlating them with the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and the pattern of the cystic epithelium.
METHODS: Twenty periapical granulomas (PGs), 20 radicular cysts (RCs), and 20 residual radicular cysts (RRCs) were submitted to immunohistochemistry using anti-galectin-1, -3, and -7 antibodies. The percentage of immunopositive cells i…

Radicular cysts are the most common cystic lesions of the jaw. Most of these lesions involve the apex of the offending tooth and appear as well-defined periapical radiolucencies. This case presents an unusually large multilocular radicular cyst crossing the midline and involving almost the entire body of the mandible. The clinical and radiographic appearance mimicked an aggressive cyst or benign tumor. The lesion was surgically excised, and the teeth were endodontically treated without any postoperative complications.

A radicular cyst is characterized as an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin that develops from Malassez epithelial rests in the periodontal ligament as the consequence of dental pulp inflammation. The cyst commenced in the carious tooth and spread to the periodontal and periapical regions. The majority of these lesions appear as precise radiolucencies and encompass their entire apex. The cystic lesion, which is also called a root-end cyst or periapical cyst, is sometimes referred to as a true cyst because it is lined by fluid epithelium. There are several treatment options to address radic…

The most prevalent kind of odontogenic cysts is radicular cysts, which usually develop from the epithelial remnants in the periodontal ligament as a result of inflammation that follows pulp necrosis. We report a case of a 49-year-old male patient who complained of painless swelling in the maxillary anterior region, which turned out to be a radicular cyst. Upon clinical examination, a soft, nontender swelling that fluctuated was found. A periapical lesion was found upon radiographic assessment. A radicular cyst was tentatively diagnosed based on clinical and radiological features. The treatment…

Radicular cysts (RCs) are the most common inflammatory jaw cystic lesions that occur infected and necrotic in teeth pulps. They account for more than 50% of all odontogenic cysts. Radicular cysts cause slowly progressive painless swelling. There are no symptoms until they become large. Enucleating the cyst is recommended with primary treatment. Here we describe a patient with a large RC with maxillary sinus involvement who underwent an endonasal endoscopic approach for complete resection. In conclusion, the endonasal endoscopic approach should be kept in mind for the resection of RC with maxil…

The degeneration risk is extremely low for odontogenic cysts. The present communication deals with a squamous cell carcinoma of the left maxilla. Clinically, it showed all the symptoms of an infected cyst; but histologically, it presented carcinomatous degeneration on certain parts of the cystic epithelium. It was a true cystocarcinoma.

Cysts of the jaws are not rare, among them the radicular cyst being the most common. It is an inflammatory type of odontogenic cyst forming as a consequence of a long-standing sequel of pulpal necrosis. In contrast to its usual location of occurrence (ie, the maxilla), herewith we report a case of successful management of a 45 year old female patient with a large radiolucent lesion in the left mandibular posterior region with a mandibular ramus extension. The pathology which was strongly presenting as a developmental variety of odontogenic cyst radiographically, was diagnosed as a radicular cy…

INTRODUCTION: Radicular cysts are, most often, oral tissue cysts. The basis for their development are the remains of Hertwig's epithelial sheath, which is stimulated to proliferate by infectious agents, mostly periapical granuloma or pulp necrosis. The cyst contents can be liquid, either clear or milky-white, or thick and yellowish-caseous pus. Bacteriological and histopathological researches have shown that development of radicular cysts from periapical lesions is a consequence of penetration of normal bacterial flora of the oral cavity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study has bacteriologically …
