Computer hardware for radiologists: Part I.

Computers are an integral part of modern radiology practice. They are used in different radiology modalities to acquire, process, and postprocess imaging data. They have had a dramatic influence on contemporary radiology practice. Their impact has extended further with the emergence of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM), Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), Radiology information system (RIS) technology, and Teleradiology. A basic overview of computer hardware relevant to radiology practice is presented here. The key hardware components in a computer are the mo

An Investigation into the Consistency in Mammographic Density Identification by Radiologists: Effect of Radiologist Expertise and Mammographic Appearance.

The aim of this work is to investigate how radiologist expertise and image appearance may have an impact on inter-reader variability of mammographic density (MD) identification. Seventeen radiologists, divided into three expertise groups, were asked to manually segment the areas they consider to be MD in 40 clinical images. The variation in identification of MD for each image was quantified by finding the range of segmentation areas. The impact of radiologist expertise and image appearance on this variation was explored. The range of areas chosen by participating radiologists varied from 7 to

Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound Consensus Conference Recommendations for Incidental Gallbladder Polyp Management: Interreader Agreement Among 10 Radiologists.

BACKGROUND. The 2022 Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) consensus conference recommendations for small gallbladder polyps support management that is less aggressive than earlier approaches and may help standardize evaluation of polyps by radiologists. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of the present study was to assess the interreader agreement of radiologists in applying SRU recommendations for management of incidental gallbladder polyps on ultrasound. METHODS. This retrospective study included 105 patients (75 women and 30 men; median age, 51 years) with a gallbladder polyp on ultrasound (with

Congenital cholesteatoma: what radiologists need to know.

Congenital cholesteatoma is a rare, non-neoplastic lesion that causes conductive hearing loss in children. It is underrecognized and often diagnosed only when there is an established hearing deficit. In the pediatric population, hearing deficiency is particularly detrimental because it can impede speech and language development and, in turn, the social and academic well-being of affected children. Delayed diagnosis leads to advanced disease that requires more extensive surgery and a greater chance of recurrence. A need to promote awareness and recognition of this condition has been advocated b

Interstitial Lung Abnormalities: What Radiologists Should Know.

Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) are radiologic abnormalities found incidentally on chest CT that are potentially related to interstitial lung diseases. Several articles have reported that ILAs are associated with increased mortality, and they can show radiologic progression. With the increased recognition of ILAs on CT, the role of radiologists in reporting them is critical. This review aims to discuss the clinical significance and radiologic characteristics of ILAs to facilitate and enhance their management.

Fascioliasis: A challenging differential diagnosis for radiologists.

We report a case of a 39 year old male who presented with nausea and right upper quadrant pain. Marked eosinophilia and a hypoechoic liver lesion on ultrasound were identified. The differential diagnosis included neoplasms, infectious diseases and hepatic abscess. Indirect hemagglutination test using purified adult Fasciola hepatica f1Ag confirmed serologic diagnosis of fascioliasis. Radiologists should keep in mind the importance of correlating imaging, clinical and laboratory findings in order to reach the correct diagnosis.

Mortality of british radiologists: a lecture note.

The precautions introduced after the first 23 years experience of the use of x-rays for medical diagnosis proved adequate to eliminate the acute hazards of exposure, but it was much longer before it was realized that small doses that did not produce any acute effect could increase the risk of cancer. British radiologists who took up the specialty at different periods have, therefore, been studied to see if the risk has now been adequately controlled. Four groups have been studied starting respectively before 1921, in 1921-34, 1935-54, and 1955-77, corresponding approximately to periods when di

[Tumor markers: essential diagnostic tools for radiologists].

A tumor marker is defined as a substance that is produced by the body in response to cancer or by the cancer tissue itself. Since discovery of the Bence-Jones protein in 1848 and AFP (alpha-fetoprotein), CEA (carcino-embryonic antigen), and SCC (squamous cell carcinoma antigen) in the 1960s and 1970s, a number of tumor markers have been developed for routine clinical laboratory tests. Some tumor markers are specific for one type of cancer, while others are positive for several cancer types. Furthermore, tumor markers are seen in non-cancerous conditions as well as in cancer. A positive result

Surgical Tools for the Interventional Radiologist.

Many of the instruments used in interventional radiology originated in surgical practice and have been adapted for minimally invasive procedures. Formal training in the design, handling, and optimal use of these instruments is not typically included in interventional radiology education. The purpose of this article is to provide a basic overview of these tools, including their names, variants, uses, and other potentially valuable details, using a pictorial approach. Included are scalpels, pickups, scissors, needle drivers, clamps, retractors, electrocautery, and sutures.

The role of radiologists in the era of oncoplasty.

New morphological and functional breast imaging techniques, progress in neoadjuvant treatments, and the development of new surgical techniques that include oncoplastic surgery, have made it possible to perform breast-conserving surgery in patients with large multifocal or multicentric breast tumours, where previously mastectomy would have been recommended. This allows for better aesthetic results, adequate oncological treatment, and improved quality of life. As a result, oncoplastic surgery has increased in local breast cancer treatment with radiologists playing a significant role in its plann

Pelvic exenteration: The radiologist's role.

Pelvic exenteration is a highly complex and aggressive surgical procedure that seeks to cure patients with pelvic tumours through the en bloc removal of two or more organs. Given its technical complexity and high rates of morbidity and mortality, careful selection of surgical candidates is essential, prioritising those for whom complete tumour resection is feasible. The preoperative management of these patients requires a multidisciplinary approach, with the radiologist playing a critical role. It is imperative for the radiologist to be familiar with the anatomical and pathological aspects to

Renovascular hypertension - a primer for the radiologist.

Renovascular hypertension (RVHT) is an important cause of secondary hypertension, accounting for approximately 75% of cases. This pictorial review describes the imaging modalities used to diagnose RVHT, including ultrasound, computed tomography angiography, and magnetic resonance angiography, provides their benefits and limitations, and explores the imaging findings, diagnostic criteria, and management of multiple causes of RVHT. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of RVHT, particularly in older individuals, while fibromuscular dysplasia is more prevalent in younger females. Less common d

A radiologist's guide to median sternotomy.

Median sternotomy is widely recognised as the primary incision technique in cardiac surgery. This surgical procedure involves dividing the sternum to gain access to the heart and lungs, making it invaluable in correcting congenital heart defects. Furthermore, it is frequently employed in adult patients, particularly during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures. In this imaging review, we present a comprehensive overview of the pre-procedural assessment and various post-sternotomy complications encountered within our clinical experience at a tertiary cardiothoracic centre. The focus of

Priapism: pathophysiology and the role of the radiologist.

Priapism is defined as a penile erection that persists for 4 h or longer and is unrelated to sexual activity. Its identification is important as lack of timely treatment (particularly of the low flow/ischaemic subgroup) can result in persisting erectile dysfunction as a consequence of irreversible corporal fibrosis. This review describes the physiology and anatomy of the normal erection, the aetiology and pathophysiology of the different types of priapism, and the role of the radiologist in the management of the condition. The treatment of iatrogenic priapism following intracavernosal injectio
