Seven Norwegian centres recruited 61 female and 54 male patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD). Their mean age was 40 years. After 6 weeks' double-blind alternating treatment with 150 mg ranitidine twice daily and placebo, 1 week of each alternative (part I), an effect score (Xs) and an efficacy index (Ei) were calculated. We report a case of drug-induced hyperprolactinemia in a 46 year postmenopausal female presenting as galactorrhea and painful breast engorgement as result of ranitidine exposure. The occurrence of galactorrhea as an adverse effect of ranitidine therapy is scarcely reported in literature and to the best of our knowledge this is first such reported case.

The authors report the case of a child born with a gastroschisis and an ileal atresia. After surgery, only 100 cm small bowel and the distal one third of his colon remained. Perianastomotic ulcers developed 6 years later. These were treated successfully with ranitidin, a treatment not previously reported in the literature. The authors conclude that treatment with ranitidin was successful in a patient with an ulcer in an ileocolic anastomosis.

The clinical efficacy of the proton pump inhibitor pantoprazole has been compared with ranitidine in a number of clinical studies in patients with either duodenal or gastric ulcer(s) or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. A patient suffering from reflux oesophagitis under treatment with ranitidine continued the treatment throughout her pregnancy (450 mg/die). The ranitidine was delivered into the maternal blood serum and the amniotic fluid up to the 17th week of pregnancy, then into the blood serum of the maternal and umbilical cord immediately after delivery, and into the serum of the newborn 24 hours after birth. The effects of the addition of carprofen (Roche), a new nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent, to regular 4-5 week ranitidine (300 mg/day) therapy on gastric secretion, serum gastrin level and ulcer healing, have been examined in 15 gastric ulcer (GU) and 60 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients. Carprofen at a therapeutic dose (300 mg/day) was well tolerated by both GU and DU patients and did not give rise to any major adverse effects.
