Induction of a mild hyperstimulation syndrome in the female rat, and the possible effect of the induction on prolactin, were studied using light and electron microscopy as well as radioimmunoassay. Five days of human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) treatment were followed by human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) administration. Ovarian hyperstimulation was observed in all treated rats, as attested to by the weight increase and by histological studies. Section of the right internal spermatic artery and vein where they overlie the ureter in Wistar-related male rats suggests that the right hydronephrosis found in these animals is not a consequence of simple obstruction by the blood vessels. The diverse effects of this operation on testicular weight presumably reflect variation in the relative importance of internal and external spermatic blood supply.

Amniocentesis performed on Day 15½ of gestation caused dysmelia in 85 of 143 offspring of Sprague-Dawley and Wistar strain rats. Almost all defects were of reduction type, only 3 hind limb postaxial supernumerary digits being seen. Three days after a rat-bite a two-month-old girl developed clinical symptoms of Streptobacillus moniliformis infection, called rat-bite fever. She became seriously ill, but responded well to treatment with benzylpencillin. In the light of our case and previous publications, we recommend prophylactic penicillin to be given to infants after rat-bites.

Stages of reproduction of a polyetiological model of coronary failure in rats are described. The model is based on the development of electrolyte steroid cardiopathy. Morphological studies confirmed the presence of degenerative changes in rat myocardium and coronary vessels. The model is intended for studies of the development and remission of cardiac diseases.

The constancy of rat EEG during surgical anaesthesia induced by phenobarbital, cholorose, paraldehyde, and inactin was investigated. The results showed that intraindividual variations and spontaneity of EEG were not abolished in the anaestheized animals. However, at the higher of the two doses used, the EEG was less variable. Our findings thus indicate that in the study of drug actions on the EEG of anaesthetized animals, the results obtained not only represent the interaction of the anaesthetic and the drug on the animal EEG but is also a reflection of the dosage of the anaesthetic employed.
