Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz from 1833 ears were subjected to multiple linear regression analyses using a stepwise inclusion model to determine the effects of hearing losses in the 500- to 4000-Hz range for each of the activators. Although statistically significant regression equations were developed, these accounted for only 1 to 47% of the variance of ART levels. In light of the wide variance of ARTs unexplainable directly from audiometric data, it was deemed more appropriate to consider the range of ARTs from the standpoint of the sampling distribution of ARTs

This study measured the threshold of the acoustic reflex as a function of reflex-activating stimulus duration. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) were measured for tonal stimuli at frequencies of 1000 and 3000 Hz and broadband noise at six durations between 20 and 500 msec for both normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Traditional techniques and response averaging were used. Results suggest that these methods have a significant influence on ART and reflex temporal summation at threshold. Lowest thresholds and almost no temporal summation were found with a response averaging technique and a bidi

This study investigates the controversy regarding the influence of age on the acoustic reflex threshold for broadband noise, 500-, 1000-, 2000-, and 4000-Hz activators between Jerger et al. [Mono. Contemp. Audiol. 1 (1978)] and Jerger [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 66 (1979)] on the one hand and Silman [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 66 (1979)] and others on the other. The acoustic reflex thresholds for broadband noise, 500-, 1000-, 2000-, and 4000-Hz activators were evaluated under two measurement conditions. Seventy-two normal-hearing ears were drawn from 72 subjects ranging in age from 20-69 years. The results

Acoustic reflex latency is the time interval between onset of an intense auditory stimulus and onset of middle-ear muscle contraction. The hypothesis was proposed that a retrocochlear lesion involving the afferent (VIIIth nerve) portion of the reflex arc should result in a prolongation of the reflex latency. A clinical procedure, the Acoustic Reflex Latency Test (ARLT), its protocol, methods and equipment were developed in order to test this hypothesis clinically. Absolute latency values and interaural latency differences (ILD) were established on 4 populations which included normals, cochlear

We carried out a prospective study to analyze the diagnostic potential of acoustic startle reflex (ASR), acoustic blink reflex (ABR) and electro-oculography (EOG) in early stages of atypical parkinsonian syndrome. The study was carried out in a consecutive series of 41 patients clinically diagnosed as atypical parkinsonism (mean time from first symptoms of 38 months and follow-up of 26 months). The three procedures were carried out immediately after the first clinical evaluation. ASR and ABR were elicited by auditory stimuli while the patient was attending to a simple reaction time task. To determine the effects of the intra-aural muscle reflex on the spondee threshold, 12 normal-hearing adults were tested monaurally with two contralaterally presented stimuli, a 2000 Hz pure tone and a broad-band noise, at two presentation levels: -10 dB and +10 dB re each subject's acoustic reflex threshold for each stimulus. The mean spondee threshold in the +10 dB condition was significantly higher than the mean spondee threshold in the -10 dB condition for both contralateral stimuli. Although some threshold shift in the presence of the +10 dB contralateral broad-band noise was no doubt due

The measurement of the acoustic reflex threshold is a basic component of the diagnostic audiological test battery that may subject patients to potentially harmful sound pressures. A wide-band acoustic impedance and reflectance system (D. H. Keefe, R. Ling, & J. C. Bulen, 1992) was investigated as a means of obtaining reflex thresholds at a reduced level and as a means of providing a more complete characterization of the reflex than current clinical methods provide. Reflex thresholds obtained by measuring changes in wide-band admittance, reflectance, and power were at least 8 dB lower than thos

It is commonly thought that as an acoustic neuroma grows it exerts pressure on the acoustic nerve resulting in alterations of the acoustic reflex and brain stem audiometry. This hypothesis has not been confirmed. In this study in an animal model, acute pressure was applied to the nerves of the internal auditory canal, and changes in the acoustic reflex were measured. Our results support the theory that pressure on the acoustic nerve causes an increase in the rate of adaptation and a decrease in the amplitude of the acoustic reflex. The contralateral reflex appears to be the most sensitive indi

Acoustic, stapedial reflex represents a response of the m. stapedius to a sonic excitation of supra speech intensity. It is the constitutive part of impendancmetric investigations, it is performed on the same apparatus after tympanometry, and it is the inseparable part in representation of impendancmetric findings. Until now, the most frequently monitored parameters of acoustic reflex of clinical importance are: threshold, amplitude, output and input angle of the reflex curve. The aim of this work was to performed detailed analysis of mentioned parameters in workers exposed to extensive action

A technique was explored for detecting the ipsilateral acoustic reflex using one acoustic signal (226-HZ tone) both to elicit the reflex and to measure the impedance of the ear. By eliminating the presentation of two acoustic signals to the same ear, artifactual responses that result from interactions between two signals are avoided. The method provided reflex threshold estimates for five normal subjects that averaged 99.8 dB SPL, in close agreement with previously reported data. A sixth subject, with otosclerosis, showed no evidence of a reflex. With some refinement, the method could become a

Aural acoustic-immittance (admittance and impedance) measurements during the quiescent and reflexive states were made using a computer sampling technique on 18 subjects with normal hearing in each of two age groups (less than 30 years and greater than 50 years). Seven pure-tones (250-6000 Hz) and broadband-noise stimuli served to elicit the acoustic reflex at sound-pressure levels from 84-116 dB (tones) and 66-116 dB (noise) in 2-dB steps during ascending and descending runs. The contralateral middle-ear activity was monitored with a 220-Hz probe by digitizing the conductance and susceptance o

Patient records were reviewed to determine whether persons with absent acoustic reflexes have a higher incidence of abnormal auditory brainstem response (ABR) results in the absence of a cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor than those with normal acoustic reflexes. Results showed patients with absent reflexes to have borderline or abnormal ABR results in 45.2% of the cases. Patients with normal reflexes had borderline or abnormal ABR results in 14.2% of the cases. Results indicate that magnetic resonance imaging is a more appropriate test for patients with absent reflexes, since ABR was often no

INTRODUCTION: The acoustic reflex is the active response of the middle ear to loud sounds, altering the mechanical transfer function of the acoustic energy into the inner ear. Our goal was to observe the effect of the acoustic reflex on the tympanic membrane by identifying a significant nonlinear increase in membrane oscillations.
METHODS: By using interferometric spectrally encoded endoscopy, we record the membrane oscillations over time in response to a loud, 200-ms-long acoustic stimulus.
RESULTS: A gradual reflex activation is measured between approximately 40 and 100 ms, manifested as a

OBJECTIVE: Safety and effectiveness of acoustic reflex tests are important issues because these tests are widely applied to screen for retrocochlear pathology. Previous studies have reported moderately high sensitivity and specificity for detection of acoustic neuroma. However, there have been reports of possible iatrogenic hearing loss resulting from acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and decay (ARD) tests. This study assessed safety and clinical performance of ART tests for detection of acoustic neuroma.
DESIGN: We report a case in which ARD testing resulted in a significant bilateral permanen

Auditory brain-stem response (ABR) and acoustic reflex test (ART) results were reviewed for 30 patients with cerebellopontile angle tumors and for 30 patients without tumor. Patients included in the nontumor group were selected to match the audiometric configurations for individual patients in the tumor group. The ABR waveforms were abnormal for all but one of the patients with tumor and for seven of the patients without tumor. The ART results were abnormal for 25 of the patients with tumor and two of the patients without tumor. Patients without tumor yielding abnormal ABR results usually had

Aided speech discrimination scores were obtained for 18 patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Monosyllabic word discrimination lists with a competing message of connected discourse at a signal-to-noise ratio of +10 dB were used as the test stimuli, and measurements were made at four hearing aid gain settings for each subject. One of the gain settings was determined by measuring the acoustic reflex threshold for filtered noise in the ear contralateral to the aided ear. Two other settings were at +/- 10 dB relative to the reflex threshold gain setting; the fourth setting was determined with

OBJECTIVE: To compare morphologies of crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex waveforms.
DESIGN: Subjects were 12 young adults with normal hearing. A signal-averaging technique was used to compare onset and offset latencies of crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex waveforms when maximum amplitudes were matched.
RESULTS: Onset latency was similar for the two modes, but offset latency was significantly longer for the crossed reflex. Further, in individual subjects the difference between crossed and uncrossed offset latencies was inversely proportional to maximum reflex amplitude.
CONCLUSION: Re
