Fit testing of N95 respirators: A pilot study on respirator design and demographic factors.

N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are widely used by healthcare workers to prevent the inhalation of hazardous airborne contaminants. Various nose-clip shapes and respirator styles in N95 FFRs are designed to eliminate gaps between the respirator and the wearer's facial skin, ensuring adequate protection for the wearer. However, variations in facial dimensions across sexes and races may affect the fit and, consequently, the performance of these respirators. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effec

Level of silica in the respirable dust inhaled by dental technicians with demonstration of respirable symptoms.

Dental technicians are exposed to various dusts in working laboratories. This study was conducted to measure level of silica in the respirable dust generated from dental fixed prosthodontics manufacturing processes using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and to compare their occurrence of respiratory symptoms with that of non-dental hospital workers (control group). Respirable dusts were personally sampled from dental technicians working at dental laboratories in Seoul Korea according to NIOSH Method 0600. Fifty personal samples were obtained during porcelain or polishing process

Mitochondrial respiration without ubiquinone biosynthesis.

Ubiquinone (UQ), a.k.a. coenzyme Q, is a redox-active lipid that participates in several cellular processes, in particular mitochondrial ele … of UQ. The UQ biosynthetic precursor DMQ9 accumulates in these cells and can sustain mitochondrial respiration, albeit inefficiently. We demonstrated that efficient rescue of the respiratory deficiency in UQ-deficient cells by UQ analogues is side chain length dependent, and that classical UQ analogues with alkyl side chains such as idebenone and decylUQ are …

Primate experiments on oral respiration.

Oral respiration associated with obstruction of the nasal airway is a common finding among patients seeking orthodontic treatment. The primate experiments reported here are part of a series designed to test some of the current hypotheses regarding the relationship between mouth breathing and dental malocclusions, that is, between deviations in orofacial muscle recruitment and jaw morphogenesis. Mouth-breathing was developed in the animals of this experiment by obstruction of the nasal passages with silicon nose plugs. The experiments showed that the monkeys adapted to nasal obstruction in diff…

Microbial respiration - a biomineral perspective.

Microbial biomineralization is a key process in natural and anthropogenic environments. Certain bacteria and archaea produce cellular energy via anaerobic respiration using metals and metalloids as terminal electron acceptors, producing intra- and extracellular biominerals. This article explores the biomineralization of arsenic (As), iron (Fe), sulfur (S) and selenium (Se), in relation with microbial respiratory processes. Ferric iron (FeIII) and the oxyanions of As, S and Se are used as terminal electron acceptors by specialized bacteria and archaea, providing significant amounts of energy un…

Allergen disrupts amygdala-respiration coupling.

Allergic asthma affects both the respiratory function and central nervous system. Communication between the amygdala and respiratory control system is critical for regulating breathing function. To date, no study provides the effect of allergic inflammation on amygdala-respiration coupling. Here, we simultaneously recorded respiration and local field potentials of the amygdala during awake immobility in a rat model of allergic asthma. A decreased synchrony was found between amygdala and respiration in asthmatic rats. Allergen also reduced the modulatory effect of the respiration phase on amygd…

Structural basis for organohalide respiration.

Organohalide-respiring microorganisms can use a variety of persistent pollutants, including trichloroethene (TCE), as terminal electron acceptors. The final two-electron transfer step in organohalide respiration is catalyzed by reductive dehalogenases. Here we report the x-ray crystal structure of PceA, an archetypal dehalogenase from Sulfurospirillum multivorans, as well as structures of PceA in complex with TCE and product analogs. The active site harbors a deeply buried norpseudo-B12 cofactor within a nitroreductase fold, also found in a mammalian B12 chaperone. The structures of PceA revea…

Upper airways and neonatal respiration.

The upper airways exert an important influence on breathing from the fetal period onward. This review focuses on recent results obtained in … s and non-nutritive swallowing. Better knowledge on the importance of the upper airways in neonatal respiration will ultimately aid in designing clinical applications for the understanding and treatment of severe, pathological respiratory conditions of the newborn.

[Oral respiration. Diagnosis and physiopathology].

The oral breathing can change the functional connections during the development of the facial bones of the children. All this causes an abnormal growth of the facial bones and of the dental structures. This work developed a new discipline to remove this problem.

[Brain function and artificial respiration].

Haemodynamic changes (cerebral perfusion pressure, cerebral blood flow) and variations of blood gases (especially paCO2) induced by mechanical ventilation, can influence cerebral function. The cerebral response to these changes is modified by the individual pathophysiology of the cranial contents. The cerebral mechanisms of adaptation allow a safe ventilation of a patient without cerebral disorders, provided ventilation is within normal clinical limits. In patients, however, whose mechanisms of adaption are impaired locally or globally, the pathophysiological situation may become grossly chang

[Artificial respiration in cerebral resuscitation].

CO2 is a potent cerebral vasodilator which induces major changes in cerebral blood flow and volume. Acute hypocapnia decreases cerebral blood volume; thus the intracranial pressure can be reduced rapidly, thereby improving cerebral hemodynamics. Hypocapnia, rapidly achieved by controlled hyperventilation, is therefore a valid treatment in cerebral resuscitation, especially when associated with elevated intracranial pressure. However, the effect of hypocapnia is short and unusually does not exceed a few hours. Consequently the indications for prolonged hyperventilation are very limited, if they
