Assessing the Utility of Audio Foundation Models for Heart and Respiratory Sound Analysis.

Pre-trained deep learning models, known as foundation models, have become essential building blocks in machine learning domains such as natural language processing and image domains. This trend has extended to respiratory and heart sound models, which have demonstrated effectiveness as off-the-shelf feature extractors. However, their evaluation benchmarking has been limited, resulting in incompatibility with state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance, thus hindering proof of their effectiveness. This study investigates the practical effectiveness of off-the-shelf audio foundation models by comparing

Analysis of Grunting Sound in Infants for Predicting the Severity of Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Vocalizations from infants, particularly sounds associated with respiratory distress, are fundamental for observational scoring of respiratory tract issues. Listening to these infant sounds is a prevalent technique for decision-making in newborn intensive care units. Expiratory grunting, indicative of the severity and presence of potential conditions, is valuable, however, this evaluative method is subjective and prone to error. This study investigates the potential of computer-aided analysis to offer an objective scale for assessing the severity of respiratory tract problems, utili

Custom Smartphone Application to Guide Locomotor-Respiratory Coupling in the Field Using Step-Adaptive Breathing Sounds.

While running is amongst the most popular activities for competition and leisure, an estimated 20-40% of runners may suffer from respiratory limitations. Some of these runners may benefit from breathing techniques to improve performance or alleviate respiratory discomfort. One such technique is locomotor-respiratory coupling (LRC), a frequency and phase synchronization of breath to step. Studies have demonstrated that LRC may benefit ventilatory efficiency via "step-driven flows," and some experts have argued it could be used for pacing exercise or increasing positive emotional states. Prediction of Neonatal Respiratory Distress in Term Babies at Birth from Digital Stethoscope Recorded Chest Sounds.

Neonatal respiratory distress is a common condition that if left untreated, can lead to short- and long-term complications. This paper investigates the usage of digital stethoscope recorded chest sounds taken within 1 min post-delivery, to enable early detection and prediction of neonatal respiratory distress. Fifty-one term newborns were included in this study, 9 of whom developed respiratory distress. For each newborn, 1 min anterior and posterior recordings were taken. These recordings were pre-processed to remove noisy segments and obtain high-quality heart and lung sounds. The random unde

Lung Sound Analysis and the Respiratory Cycle Dependence of Impulse Oscillometry in Asthma Patients.

Objective A lung sound analysis (LSA) is useful for detecting airway inflammation and obstruction in patients with asthma. To elucidate the mechanism of LSA, we investigated the relationship between the exhalation-to-inhalation sound pressure ratio in the low frequency range between 100 and 195 Hz (E/I LF) and the respiratory cycle dependence of impulse oscillometry (IOS) parameters. Methods Asthma patients underwent IOS [resistance of the respiratory system at 5 Hz (R5) and 20 Hz (R20), the reactance area (AX), resonant frequency of reactance (Fres), and reactance of the respiratory system at

Respiratory health screening using pulmonary function tests and lung sound analysis.

Lung sounds (LS) analysis is a potential source of additional objective, noninvasive and quantitative information on the status of the pulmonary system. We have examined the hypothesis that the addition of lung sounds analysis to spirometry increases the sensitivity of objective population screening, as compared to the use of spirometry alone. Questionnaires, spirometry and lung sounds were obtained in 493 active workers. Lung sounds analysis consisted of the averaged power spectra of breath sounds, measured separately during inspiration and expiration at four standard locations over the trach

[Indwelling transtracheal sound for oxygen administration in the patient with hypoxic chronic respiratory insufficiency].

A new technique for administering oxygen to patients with severe chronic respiratory failure is reported. It consists of introducing a catheter, 2 mm in diameter, into the trachea between the second and third tracheal rings under local anesthesia. The technique was used in a 70-year old patient with severe chronic obstructive lung disease and resulted in significant reduction of dyspnoea, improvement in general condition with a weight gain of 6 kg in 6 months, and a 15 mmHg increase in arterial partial oxygen pressure for the same oxygen flow rate. This technique appears to be indicated for pa

A novel data augmentation technique based on wheezing physiological modeling applied to asthma severity management in respiratory sounds.

Wheezing sounds are critical biomarkers for diagnosing respiratory disorders, including asthma. Recent advancements still depend on the availability of high-quality training datasets. The creation of public databases containing a diverse array of wheezing sounds from patient auscultations is vital. Nonetheless, acquiring a sufficiently large and varied collection of wheezing sounds remains challenging because of the significant time required for comprehensive data collection by clinicians, the limited availability of patients exhibiting these acoustic biomarkers, and the infrequency of certain

Separating obstructive and central respiratory events during sleep using breathing sounds: Utilizing transfer learning on deep convolutional networks.

Sleep apnea diagnosis relies on polysomnography (PSG), which is resource-intensive and requires manual analysis to differentiate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from central sleep apnea (CSA). Existing portable devices, while valuable in detecting sleep apnea, often do not distinguish between the two types of apnea. Such differentiation is critical because OSA and CSA have distinct underlying causes and treatment approaches. This study addresses this gap by leveraging tracheal breathing sounds as a non-invasive and cost-effective method to classify central and obstructive events. We employed a t

A Lightweight CNN Model for Detecting Respiratory Diseases From Lung Auscultation Sounds Using EMD-CWT-Based Hybrid Scalogram.

Listening to lung sounds through auscultation is vital in examining the respiratory system for abnormalities. Automated analysis of lung auscultation sounds can be beneficial to the health systems in low-resource settings where there is a lack of skilled physicians. In this work, we propose a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to classify respiratory diseases from individual breath cycles using hybrid scalogram-based features of lung sounds. The proposed feature-set utilizes the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The performa
