Immunofluorescent studies of bovine para-influenza 3 virus. II. Experimentally infected calves.

Fluorescent antibody (FA) studies of tissues from three colostrum deprived calves inoculated intranasally with the SF-4 strain of bovine para-influenza 3 (PI-3) virus indicated that these calves developed a mild upper respiratory infection but infected cells were not identified in the lower respiratory tract. Three other calves inoculated intranasally and intratracheally with PI-3 virus developed more severe clinical signs of infection and virus was identified, by FA techniques, in the upper and lower respiratory tract of all three calves and in the spleen of one calf. PI-3 virus was detected

The active lung microbiota landscape of COVID-19 patients through the metatranscriptome data analysis.

Introduction: With the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the interaction between the host and SARS-CoV-2 was widely studied. However, it is unclear whether and how SARS-CoV-2 infection affects lung microflora, which contribute to COVID-19 complications. Methods: Here, we analyzed the metatranscriptomic data of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of 19 COVID-19 patients and 23 healthy controls from 6 independent projects and detailed the active microbiota landscape in both healthy individuals and COVID-19 pati

Morbillivirus infection in two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the coasts of England and Scotland.

Two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), one found stranded on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, and the other in the Moray Firth, Scotland, in late 1990, were examined post mortem. Lesions of diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia were present in both animals; they were characterised by the infiltration of alveoli with leucocytes, macrophages and multinucleate syncytia, the necrosis of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, focal proliferation of type II pneumocytes and occasional acidophilic cytoplasmic inclusions in alveolar macrophages and syncytia. Lymphoid depletion was apparent in the spleen, t

Oral medicine in practice: viral infection.

The fourth article in this series deals with viral infections which may present in the dental surgery. Two groups of viruses, herpes and coxsackie, are responsible for the majority of viral conditions involving the orofacial region which present to the dentist. Mucosal ulceration is the most frequent clinical presentation, although viruses may also be responsible for salivary gland swelling or epithelial hyperplasia. Diagnosis of viral infection is important, since treatment which can alleviate symptoms and reduce the likelihood of spread of infection is available. In addition, the recognition

Acute respiratory tract infections of children in hospital: a viral and Mycoplasma pneumoniae profile.

Respiratory specimens and blood were collected from all infants and children admitted with acute respiratory illness to a paediatric unit in Christchurch from May to November (late autumn, winter and spring) 1983, to define the viral aetiological agents involved. A virus or Mycoplasma pneumoniae was identified in 160 (50%) of 317 children studied by the rapid indirect immunofluorescence, virus culture and/or serological techniques. Aetiological agents were detected in 71% of children with bronchiolitis, 57% with pneumonia, 53% with bronchitis, 40% with laryngotracheitis (croup), and 45% with u

Mode of parainfluenza virus transmission determines the dynamics of primary infection and protection from reinfection.

Little is known about how the mode of respiratory virus transmission determines the dynamics of primary infection and protection from reinfection. Using non-invasive imaging of murine parainfluenza virus 1 (Sendai virus) in living mice, we determined the frequency, timing, dynamics, and virulence of primary infection after contact and airborne transmission, as well as the tropism and magnitude of reinfection after subsequent challenge. Contact transmission of Sendai virus was 100% efficient, phenotypically uniform, initiated and grew to robust levels in the upper respiratory tract (URT), later

[Comparative pathogenicity tests of eight pigeon paramyxovirus 1 variant isolates in pigeons, turkeys and chickens].

Eight pigeon paramyxovirus-1 isolates which were isolated from diseased pigeons were comparatively tested for their pathogenicity in chickens, turkeys and racing pigeons. Intramuscular inoculation of all of the eight viruses resulted in all pigeons in clinical signs like polyuria, lameness of wings and in parts also in torticollis. Also, intravenously inoculated chickens developed distinct signs such as apathy, liquid droppings and in part also torticollis. Six of the eight PMV-1 isolates induced in turkeys similar signs as in chickens; inoculation of two isolates yielded no signs in turkeys.

[Laboratory diagnosis of infantile infections caused by the respiratory syncytial virus. Report of 9 cases].

Nine cases of respiratory infections caused by syncytial respiratory virus which were diagnosed by direct immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies are presented here. Six of them have been clinically diagnosed as bronchiolitis and the remaining three are diagnosed as obstructive bronchitis, upper respiratory cold and respiratory distress respectively. Seven are male and two are female. Their ages vary from 13 days to eleven months. Its usefulness is indicated given its speed and the current availability of specific antiviral therapeutics. The test would be especially indicated in atypical

Properties of an encephalitogenic canine parainfluenza virus.

An isolate of canine parainfluenza (CPI) virus from the cerebrospinal fluid of a dog with neurological dysfunction was characterized in vitro in comparison to a prototype strain of CPI virus, D008. The virus, designated 78-238 was found to be antigenically related to CPI virus (Manhatten strain) and simian virus 5 (SV5), but not to mumps virus (Enders strain). Ultrastructural observation of gradient-purified 78-238 virus revealed enveloped pleomorphic virions with helical nucleocapsid symmetry. Preliminary pathological studies indicated that 78-238 virus was encephalitogenic for gnotobiotic do

Molecular and genetic characterization of bovine parainfluenza type 3 European field and vaccine strains.

Bovine Parainfluenza Type 3 virus (BPIV-3) is an enveloped, non-segmented single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family (genus Respirovirus) with a well-known role in Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) onset. Being isolated for the first time in 1959, BPIV-3 currently circulates worldwide in cattle herds and is routinely tested in suspected BRD cases. Different commercial vaccines are available to prevent infection and/or to reduce the clinical signs associated with BPIV-3 infection, which are essential to prevent secondary infections. Despite years of molecul

Paramyxovirus-induced syncytium cell formation is suppressed by a dominant negative fusion regulatory protein-1 (FRP-1)/CD98 mutated construct: an important role of FRP-1 in virus-induced cell fusion.

Syncytium formation and subsequent generalized cell fusion have been reported as potentially important mechanisms of virus-induced cytotoxic effects. We tried to clarify the roles of fusion regulatory factor-1 (FRP-1) in virus-induced cell fusion. Two mutated human FRP-1/CD98 proteins [FRP-1/HN, in which the cytoplasmic domain was replaced with the cytoplasmic domain of human parainfluenza virus type 2 (HPIV-2) haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN), and FRP-1/330 (serine), in which a cysteine at amino acid 330 was mutated to serine], when expressed stably in L929 cells, were lacking in cell-fusion

Quantifying the role of pre-existing tissue resident cellular immunity in limiting respiratory virus transmission.

Viral transmission from infected donors to uninfected recipients is the key event underlying the spread of viral pathogens at the level of a host population. Successful viral transmission from a donor to a recipient depends on several factors including the infectiousness of the donor. Donor infectiousness in turn can depend on the viral kinetics and viral load of the donor, donor behavior and symptoms, and donor immunity. Here, we use a mouse model of murine respirovirus (otherwise known as Sendai virus SeV) infection to quantitatively explore donor determinants of respiratory virus transmissi

Presumed respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in three immunocompromised adults.

Three cases of presumed respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia in immunocompromised adults are described. Two patients had symptoms of cough, fever, and malaise, following completion of a course of combination chemotherapy for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The third patient, a juvenile onset diabetic, developed similar symptoms while hospitalized for severe hyperglycemia. Chest roentgenograms showed lower lobe infiltrates in both leukemic patients and a bilateral non-confluent bronchopneumonia in the diabetic patient. All patients had a marked rise in complement-fixing an

Acute fatal pneumonia in calves due to respiratory syncytial virus.

An acute pneumonia developed in 28 calves which had been housed together from one to two weeks of age. The clinical signs included pyrexia, tachypnoea, respiratory distress and coughing. Some of the calves died. The pneumonia was characterised by an alveolitis with multinucleated syncytia, alveolar epithelial hyperplasia and bronchiolitis. Interstitial emphysema was also present. Fifteen of 19 calves examined serologically had rising neutralising antibody titres to respiratory syncytial virus; in nine calves the rise was fourfold or greater. Respiratory syncytial virus was not isolated from th
