The necessity for prophylactic treatment for degenerative disease in the peripheral retina cannot be evaluated merely on the basis of the op … ble in cases with bilateral symmetric findings or prior to cataract extraction. Treatment of senile retinoschisis is only justified in cases with large and centrally located holes in the outer wall or in the presence of symptomatic schisis detachment.

BACKGROUND: Retinoschisis is characterized by separation of the neurosensory retina into two layers. The traditional pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling and macular buckling has been shown to resolve retinoschisis. We report a case of unknown cause of retinoschisis in a young adult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man presented with an 18-day history of metamorphopsia and blurred vision in his left eye. Optical coherence tomography revealed retinoschisis in the macula, the temporal side of the macula, and near the superior and inferior vascular arches. The patient w…

PRÉCIS: Peripapillary retinoschisis (PPRS) may bias optical coherence tomography's (OCT) monitoring of glaucoma progression. Its impact on glaucoma still remains uncertain. Only 2 out of the 10 included studies illustrated a correlation between PPRS and glaucoma progression.
OBJECTIVES: The frequent use of OCT increased the detection of PPRS, which poses challenges in the follow-up of patients with glaucoma. This systematic review aims to summarize the literature regarding PPRS in glaucoma, exploring its prevalence, impact on disease, and clinical management implications.
METHODS: We searche…

The aim of this case report was to present an unusual case of peripapillary retinoschisis (PPRS) associated with ocular hypotony after glaucoma surgery. It refers to a 78-year-old man with primary open-angle glaucoma who developed PPRS while hypotonous. Optical coherence tomography of the peripapillary and the macular area of the right eye revealed PPRS temporally and nasally to the optic disc, more prominent at the level of the outer nuclear layer and less so at the inner nuclear layer. The PPRS completely regressed after 1 month of treatment and restoration of intraocular pressure to normal …

PURPOSE: To provide detailed description of pediatric traumatic retinoschisis.
METHODS: The medical records of children with either abusive head trauma and traumatic macular retinoschisis seen at a single center from 1993 to 2006 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical details were extracted from the record and photographic documentation. Evaluation regarding abuse excluded ophthalmology findings to avoid circular reasoning.
RESULTS: Of 134 patients with suspected abusive head trauma, 31 had retinoschisis. Mean age was 9 months. Of the 31, 22 (71%) offered a history of injury, and 9 (29%) we…

An unusual case of retinoschisis and associated retinal detachment in a 61-year-old man is reported. The case involved a retinoschisis area with 22 outer-layer retinal holes and two inner-layer retinal holes in the superior nasal quadrant of the left eye. The retinal detachment extended posteriorly beyond the schisis area. The patient's condition was managed with a combination of cryotherapy and a scleral buckle. Postoperatively, the did well despite the presence of a choroidal detachment that resolved in one month. Cases previously reported have not precisely listed the number of retinal hole…

PURPOSE: To determine whether the Mizuo-Nakamura phenomenon, which is an important diagnostic sign of Oguchi's disease, also occurs in patients with genetically proven X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS).
METHODS: We examined three patients with a clinical and genetic diagnosis of XLRS and one patient who was clinically diagnosed with Oguchi's disease, with an emphasis on the Mizuo-Nakamura phenomenon. We obtained color fundus photographs, especially in the fully dark-adapted state, using the non-mydriatic mode on a digital retinal camera and infrared observation monitor to avoid the bleaching effe…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Vitreous haemorrhage (VH) and retinal detachment (RD) cause a precipitous decline in vision in a subset of patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), an otherwise a slowly progressive condition. This study aims to report the frequency of macular and peripheral retinal findings in a large cohort of patients with XLRS and to determine whether peripheral retinal findings are associated with VH and RD.
METHODS: A retrospective observational case series was performed in 65 patients with XLRS with a pathogenic variant in retinoschisin 1. Chart review included examination notes, f…

Stereoscopic transparencies studied with magnification and projection suggest that the retinal elevation that communicates with optic pits is frequently a schisislike separation of the internal layers of retina. Thirteen of 15 eyes with optic pits and maculopathy fit the schisis pattern. Separation of the outer layers of the retina is a secondary phenomenon that starts in the macula.

BACKGROUND: Recently, optical coherence tomography (OCT) analysis has contributed greatly to the detection of posterior retinoschisis associated with optic disc pits. We report an unusual case of optic disc pit maculopathy.
CASE: A 37-year-old woman with a multilayered structure of posterior retinoschisis associated with a very small, shallow optic disc pit was treated.
OBSERVATIONS: The patient came to our clinic after a few weeks of decreased vision in her right eye. Fundus examination showed a shallow macular detachment with a tiny, shallow pit at the temporal edge of the optic disc. OCT …

A 13-year-old boy presented with juvenile X-linked retinoschisis and in the right fundus a typical retinal angioma situated at the temporal site of the macula. A maternal uncle and a maternal grand uncle were known to be also affected by juvenile retinoschisis. Family history was negative for retinal angiomatosis. Extensive internal, neurologic and radiologic examinations did not reveal associated neurologic or visceral involvement in the affected child. The association of a retinal angioma and juvenile X-linked retinoschisis is most probably fortuitous.

135 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser coagulation. 73 of them were reexamined after an average interval of 15 months. The treatment consisted of a posterior demarcation by 2-3 lasercoagulation series in the area of the normal retina and in addition treatment of the entire area of retinoschisis. Lasercoagulation was performed, when: 1. the retinoschisis reached the equator or extended postequatorially, 2. a hole in the outer layer was detected, 3. a retinal detachment proceeded from a retinoschisis in the other eye.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency and prevalence of macular features in X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) patients using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography, with attention to inter-eye asymmetry.
DESIGN: Retrospective consecutive case series.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-three male patients (66 eyes) with genetically confirmed XLRS evaluated at a tertiary pediatric retina clinic between 2013 and 2024.
METHODS: Fundus photography and macular OCT images were graded independently by 2 masked reviewers for macular schisis, cystoid spaces (with layer localization), macular atrophy, spo…

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis is a recessive disease characterized by progressive macular degeneration and vision loss due to pathogenic variation in RS1.
METHODS: We administered a single subretinal injection of an AAV8 vector containing human RS1 complementary DNA (scAAV8-hRS1) into one eye of patients 5 to 18 years of age who had X-linked retinoschisis. The primary end point was safety during the 52-week period after injection. Secondary end points included the change from baseline to week 52 in the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), retinal structure (assessed with swept-source opt…
