Rosacea is a common and chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease with unknown etiology. The pathophysiology of rosacea is still poorly understood. Epidemiological studies indicate a genetic component, but a rosacea gene has not been detected yet. Recent molecular studies propose that an altered innate immune response is involved in the pathogenesis of the rosacea disease. INTRODUCTION: Rhinophyma is a disfiguring hypertrophy of the skin of the tip of the nose.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the new technique of coblation of rhinophyma.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series of six patients.
RESULTS: All patients had a good cosmetic result. Comparison with existing techniques showed advantages due to the lower tissue temperature involved.
CONCLUSION: Coblation of rhinophyma is an effective treatment with few side effects.

The formation of rhinophyma is due to hyperplasia and hypertrophia of the sebaceous glands of the nose and represents the final stage of rosacea. The associated fibrosis can only be reduced by surgical procedures. Thus the therapy of choise is surgical excision completed by dermabrasion. From 1977 to 1985, 23 patients with rhinophyma were treated in this way at our clinic.
