Enhanced degradation of enrofloxacin in mariculture wastewater based on marine bacteria and microbial carrier.

This study aimed to isolate marine bacteria to investigate their stress response, inhibition mechanisms, and degradation processes under hig … e predominant families of marine bacteria were Bacillaceae (50.46%), Alcanivoracaceae (32.30%), and Rhodobacteraceae (13.36%). They responded to ENR removal by altering cell membrane properties, stimulating the activity of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes and antioxidant systems, and mitigating ENR stress through the secretion of extracellular polymeric substance ( …

Linking microbial diversity and population dynamics to the removal efficiency of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in an anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) system.

The removal efficiencies (REs) of nineteen pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) (six antibiotics-clarithromycin, ofloxacin, sulfadiazin … brozil were concomitant to higher relative abundances of bacterial phylotypes classified within the Rhodobacteraceae and Sphingomonadaceae (Alphaproteobacteria), while those of Betaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Methanomethylovorans (Euryarchaea) correlated positively with the REs of up to seven PhACs belonging to different therapeutic groups.

Structure and ion-release mechanism of PIB-4-type ATPases.

Transition metals, such as zinc, are essential micronutrients in all organisms, but also highly toxic in excessive amounts. Heavy-metal transporting P-type (PIB) ATPases are crucial for homeostasis, conferring cellular detoxification and redistribution through transport of these ions across cellular membranes. No structural information is available for the PIB-4-ATPases, the subclass with the broadest cargo scope, and hence even their topology remains elusive. Here, we present structures and complementary functional analyses of an archetypal PIB-4-ATPase, sCoaT from Sulfitobacter sp. NAS14-1.

Bacterial profiling of White Plague Disease in a comparative coral species framework.

Coral reefs are threatened throughout the world. A major factor contributing to their decline is outbreaks and propagation of coral diseases … a higher abundance of taxa from the families that include known coral pathogens (Alteromonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Vibrionaceae). In our comparative framework analysis, we found differences in microbial assemblages between coral species and coral health states. Notably, patterns of bacterial community structures from HH and DD corals were maintained over specie …

Isolation and Characterization of Pseudooceanicola aestuariicola sp. nov., from Tidal-Flat Sediments.

A novel bacterial strain, designated MF1-13ᵀ, was isolated from tidal-flat sediment collected in Gochang, Republic of Korea. Cells of strain MF1-13ᵀ are Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile, and short rod-shaped to ovoid, forming pale yellow colonies on marine agar. The strain produces catalase and oxidase. It grows at 25-30 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), and in the presence of 0-5% (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth at 2% (w/v). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA and genome sequences placed strain MF1-13ᵀ within the family Roseobacteraceae (class Alphap

Vitamin B12 sharing Jujubicoccus corallicola gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from coral Porites sp.

We isolated a novel strain GXU_MW_L88T from coral Porites sp. Strain GXU_MW_L88T was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, short rod, with a capacity to produce vitamin B12. The growth requirements of this strain were a temperature range of 20-37 °C, a pH range of 5.0-11.0 and a NaCl concentration of 0-6% (w/v). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that GXU_MW_L88T shared an identity of 92.2% with Lutimaribacter marinistellae SF-12T. Degradation of the microbial stress protectants and chemical chaperones ectoine and hydroxyectoine by a bacterial hydrolase-deacetylase complex.

When faced with increased osmolarity in the environment, many bacterial cells accumulate the compatible solute ectoine and its derivative 5-hydroxyectoine. Both compounds are not only potent osmostress protectants, but also serve as effective chemical chaperones stabilizing protein functionality. Ectoines are energy-rich nitrogen and carbon sources that have an ecological impact that shapes microbial communities. Although the biochemistry of ectoine and 5-hydroxyectoine biosynthesis is well understood, our understanding of their catabolism is only rudimentary. Here, we combined biochemical and
